Full moon when not supposed to be ?

A very short post for a little question that I hope won't turn embarrassing :

On my calendars we are suppose to get a full moon tomorrow night the 2th August 2012.

Well, we went out last evening, so the 31th of July and when we went out the place we were, we got all very surprised to see that the moon was already 'full' and even quite close enough to be able to see its designs. It was a nice distraction on the moment but now, I just wonder how that did happen or if I am missing something ?

How could the moon be in "advance" ?

I dont know the answer to your question, but i have seen some strange moon sightings myself this last year.
Im sure an expert in astronomy could put me straight, but the ecipses have been tilted. Earlier this year in March in Enlgand i noticed it.
Its something ive never seen before and im always looking up into the night sky.

Fwiw, either side of the full moon phase + 1 or 2 days, the view is 97% - 93% full respectively. If i'm not looking at a calendar, sometimes mistakenly think it is full when it is not.

Thank you Loreta, so indeed, the moon last night wasn't "full" and I wasn't able to understand the five missing percents :)

FWIW, I do not (consciously) keep up with when the moon is going to be full but last night noticed that it was unusually bright outside and looked outside. I also thought the moon was full and unusually bright and was for some reason surprised, thinking (feeling from within) that it shouldn't be full. 6 to get eyes checked.

Same here, we checked the calendars "after" yesterday evening because it was big and bright enough to get our attention while walking out the place we went :)

Anyway, no big deal, a little "detail" fast explained :)

Could be an illusion created by the atmosphere, warping the apparent width of the moon. Just a guess, aside from the fact that a near full moon can, under the right circumstances, appear full.

Yes. Ark spent some time repairing our telescope in the last weeks and we've been taking it out and testing it lately. He also takes some fantastic moon photos. He posted one on his FB page a couple months ago that was just stunning.

I have done a few with my panasonic lumix dmc-z28, but it won't even scratch something made with a telescope ... ;)
