Fundraising Idea???

My father and I were discussing SOTT this week-end and without doubt we both know the FULL value of SOTT to our lives. However we must plan for scenarios in the future where SOTT may be out of our reach for long periods of time. When we go fully off of the grid" we will be at the mercy of nature and there will only be some periods of time were we will have electricity from our own sources. Therefore our internet connection will become sporadic at best...

Anyways we thought that perhaps there may be a way to archive SOTT on a DVD disk so it would be available for offline browsing. Obviously this would solve a problem for us, but it may be a good fundraising idea for you... Perhaps with donations over 50 or 100 dollars would you could offer an up-to date archive disk... The cool thing about this for you would be that it is a way to keep people donating every year... People could donate each year for the UPDATE version covering the previous years work... We liked this idea as it really would not cost to much for you to offer this, and yet the value for us would be HUGE...

Also - We suspect that your server load must be HUGE, and if you guys need to tighten you belt in the future, it might be advantageous to clear off some of that storage from the net, and offer the HARD STORAGE from the disk. This could allow you to focus on the new content and keep server storage and bandwidth to a minimum with-out loosing access to the info...

We also realize that we live in strange times, and certain events yet unforeseeable may one day drive SOTT of the net... As nasty as that sounds, I think that is a scenario that should be planned for and another reason why an archive disk would be a great idea...

Anyways... This was just a brainstorm we had this week-end and thought we would throw it out there... We realize that you guys will do what's best and possible...

Making this available as a download would also be a good idea. Maybe even as a legal torrent? That would be the most economic way to distribute a large file or collection of files.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.torrent
BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing protocol used to distribute large amounts of data. The initial distributor of the complete file or collection acts as the first seed. Each peer who downloads the data also uploads them to other peers. Relative to standard internet hosting, this provides a significant reduction in the original distributor's hardware and bandwidth resource costs. It also provides redundancy against system problems and reduces dependence on the original distributor.
