Gas-related explosions and fire

MOSCOW, February 9. /TASS/. The death toll from a household gas explosion in a five-story apartment block in Novosibirsk has risen to two, more people might remain under the rubble, the local emergencies services told TASS on Thursday.

"According to preliminary data, two people died. More people might be buried under the rubble. Their number is being verified," a spokesman said.

Novosibirsk region governor Andrey Travnikov has confirmed the death of two people in the household gas explosion in a residential house.

"Regrettably, one more person has died in hospital. Carbon monoxide poisoning," he wrote on his Telegram channel.

At least three people may still be trapped under the rubble after a household gas explosion in an apartment block in Novosibirsk, Viktro Orlov, chief of the Russian emergencies ministry’s Novosibirsk region department, said on Thursday.

"Preliminarily, at least three people may still be under the rubble. Efforts are being made to find whereabouts of the house’s residents," he said.

According to the emergencies ministry, about 30 apartments have been ruined by the blast. The search and rescue operation is planned to be completed by the end of the day.

The city’s authorities say that the residents will be settled in a new place.

One person who was reported as killed in the household gas explosion in Novosibirsk has been revived, Viktor Orlov said.
"One has been revived in hospital," he said.

A household gas explosion in a five-storey apartment block in Novosibirsk occurred in the early hours on Thursday causing partial collapse of the building. The explosion was followed by a fire on an area of 300 square meters, which has already been put out. One person died in the explosion and eight more were injured. According to emergencies services, the blast was preliminarily caused by a gas leak in one of the apartments. A criminal case has been opened.

There is a video in the link to TG channel posted above with fire and lightning on the background. Whether it is technically possible, not sure. May be there was another cause, but the lightning used as a diversion version🧐

WYNNEWOOD, Okla. -- Two people were injured Tuesday at a fire in a refinery in southern Oklahoma, authorities said.

The fire began about 8:20 a.m. at the refinery in Wynnewood, about 60 miles (97 kilometers) south of Oklahoma City, according to a statement from Sugar Land, Texas-based CVR Energy, which owns the refinery.

The statement did not disclose the injuries suffered by the two employees or their conditions. All other employees are accounted for, according to the statement.

“The source of the fire has been isolated and emergency crews are working to extinguish the fire,” CVR spokesperson Brandee Stephens said, but the cause was not identified.

“Company officials are conducting a thorough investigation into this incident,” Stephens said.

The statement said the fire began in a gasoline hydrotreater, which is used to remove contaminants during the refining process.

Garvin County Emergency Management director Dave Johnson said during a news conference that the area is safe.

“There's no threat to the community, there's no issue outside of the refinery,” Johnson said. “The part (of the refinery) that was impacted and secure is shut down, but the rest of the refinery is safe and running."

Johnson said nearby U.S. Highway 77 and a section of railroad were shut down briefly as a safety precaution, but both are being reopened.

The refinery is a small crude oil refinery that stores waste produced during refining operations, according to Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality records.

DEQ spokesperson Erin Hatfield said the agency is investigating the fire and potential hazards, but was immediately focused on making sure the fire is extinguished.

A portion of I-95 in Philadelphia collapsed early Sunday after a tanker truck caught fire underneath an overpass, according to officials and local reports.

Flames and billowing smoke were seen in pictures and video near Cottman Avenue and State Road in Northeast Philadelphia. A portion of the roadway also appeared to have collapsed.

Pennsylvania State Police told FOX News Digital in an email that the agency was assisting Philadelphia police and other public safety partners with traffic control and re-routing, with the safety of residents and motorists being their top priority.

The city’s Office of Emergency Management tweeted that the large fire has shut down all lanes of I-95 in both directions and urged motorists to avoid the area.

It was unclear how the fire started or whether anyone was injured in the incident.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said the vehicle fire on northbound I-95 between Exit 25 for Allegheny Avenue/Castor Avenue and Exit 32 for Academy Road/Linden Avenue closed all lanes.

The roadway is expected to remain shut down for an extended period of time while crews continue to work in the area.

This is a developing story; check back for updates.

Paris explosion causes fire outburst and buildings to collapse on Left Bank
At least 29 people were injured, four of them very seriously, by an explosion and blaze on Paris' Left Bank on Wednesday, June 21. Two people were still missing. The "violent" fire which broke out after the explosion had now been "contained", Paris police chief Laurent Nunez said at the scene, adding that "work is still taking place under the rubble" to find any more possible victims.

Witnesses described a large explosion at 4:55 pm at 277 Rue Saint-Jacques, home to a fashion school. It preceded a huge fire. The fire service said there had been "an explosion" which had "caused the collapse of two buildings." Paris police spokeswoman Loubna Atta said it was too early to determine the source of the fire and could not confirm reports it was caused by a gas explosion.

The Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said an investigation had been opened into aggravated involuntary injury and the probe would examine whether the explosion stemmed from a suspected violation of safety rules. Beccuau said investigators would seek to “determine whether or not there was failure to respect a rule or individual imprudence that led to the explosion.”

Nunez, the Paris police chief, said firefighters prevented the fire from igniting two neighboring buildings that were “seriously destabilized” by the explosion and evacuated. The explosion blew out several windows in the area, witnesses and the police chief said.

Smoke was no longer visibly rising from the building by Wednesday evening. Sirens still wailed as ambulances passed through the neighborhood, but residents were starting to move freely again on the street, which had been cordoned off earlier.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin asked on Twitter for people to stay away from the area to not hinder the massive deployment of firefighters and police. A total of 230 firefighters were at the site, 70 fire trucks and nine doctors, according to police.

'Glass falling everywhere'

The Paris Police Prefecture also asked residents to avoid the area to allow emergency services and police officers to intervene. On Twitter, images showed a huge cloud of smoke. The Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo immediately went to the scene and the Paris City Hall crisis unit was activated.

According to the Paris public prosecutor's office, "a building caught fire and partially collapsed" on Rue Saint-Jacques, near the church of Notre-Dame du Val-de-Grâce. The public prosecutor's office said that "at this stage, there was no way of determining the cause of the fire."

The mayor of the 5th arrondissement, Florence Berthout, told Le Monde that a loud explosion had started on the 2nd floor of the Paris American Academy, a bilingual design school at 277 Rue Saint-Jacques. The fire brigade was still securing the perimeter because "glass was falling everywhere", she added.

Contacted by Le Monde, Philippe Delorme, the secretary general of the Catholic education authority, whose premises adjoin the affected building, said he heard a "loud explosion". "The Paris American Academy building was on fire", said Delorme, adding that the offices of the general secretariat of Catholic education had suffered only "minor damage." "We were evacuated via the Val-de-Grâce hospital [which is in the immediate vicinity] because we feared another explosion", continued Delorme.

2 dead after fiery crash, explosions on Hwy. 401 east of Toronto

This was an odd incident in that no one seems to know why the driver of this tanker truck lost control in the first place;
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said it is believed that a tanker truck carrying a full load of “highly flammable” liquid was travelling in the eastbound lanes of the highway when, for some unknown reason, the driver lost control and ended up in the westbound lanes.

Schmidt said the truck "exploded into a fireball" and the flames spread to an oncoming transport truck and passenger vehicle.
And for some strange reason, the fuel that spilled from the tanker into the storm drains caused some more massive explosions;
The road surface also sustained significant damage, Schmidt said.

"The explosions that were being reported in that area while this fire was ongoing actually extended not only to where the vehicle, the transport truck, was burning but as the fuel was pouring into the catch basins, there were explosions in the storm sewers that actually blew the storm sewers and the catch basins to pieces," he added.

31 dead after gas explosion at a barbecue restaurant in China
Updated 1:58 AM EDT, Thu June 22, 2023
At least 31 people are dead and seven injured in the Chinese city of Yinchuan, in northwest Ningxia region, after a gas explosion at a barbecue restaurant Wednesday night, according to state media.

The explosion was caused by a leak of a liquified gas tank inside the restaurant, and took place around 8:40 p.m., according to state broadcaster CCTV.

Among the seven injured, one person is still in critical condition. The other six are being treated in the hospital for minor injuries, burns and glass cuts.

Local fire authorities sent 20 vehicles and more than 100 personnel to the scene, with search and rescue operations lasting until 4 a.m. Thursday morning, according to state media.

Photos posted by state media show the damaged building, with blackened exteriors, debris on the ground and smoke in the air. Firefighters are seen entering the second floor on a ladder and lifting people out on stretchers.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping called the explosion “heartbreaking,” and said it was a “profound lesson.” He has issued instructions to authorities on the scene, requiring “all efforts” to treat the injured, strengthen safety supervision and protect residents’ safety, according to CCTV.

Interviews by police and firefighters on the scene established that two restaurant staffers had smelled gas about an hour before the explosion, said the Yinchuan government in a statement posted online on Thursday.

The two staffers found the valve of the gas tank had broken, and sent another staff member to buy a new one. The explosion took place as the valve was being replaced.

Police have detained nine people and frozen their assets, including the restaurant’s manager, employees and shareholders, according to state media China Youth Daily.

The restaurant is located on a busy street, state media reported. The incident came just before China began its three-day national public holiday, from Thursday to Saturday, marking the Dragon Boat Festival.

The country has been rocked by a number of safety incidents this year. A coal mine collapse in Inner Mongolia in February left 53 dead; then in April, the deadliest fire to hit Beijing in two decades killed 29 people in a hospital.

Like I said in the Train derailments and explosions and chemical spills thread, at this stage of the investigation, it has not been confirmed yet that the explosion was caused by gas:

One person is still missing and four are in critical condition after dozens were injured in a powerful explosion in a building in central Paris.

The explosion at around 4:55pm local time on Wednesday at the Paris American Academy on Rue Saint-Jacques left 37 people injured.

The blast sparked a fire that sent smoke soaring over the French capital’s monuments and prompted an evacuation of other properties, authorities said.

Officials are exploring a possible gas leak as the explosion but Paris police spokesperson Loubna Atta said it was too early to determine the source of the fire and could not confirm reports it was caused by a gas explosion.

Huge plumes of black smoke swelled into the air over the surrounding neighbourhood, but the fire was quickly brought under control.

“The explosion was extremely violent,” said Florence Berthout, mayor for the fifth arrondissement of the city, where the explosion happened.

Explosion in Paris: some fifteen buildings still inaccessible, according to the mayor of the 5th arrondissement

Thu, June 22 2023 at 10:50 AM

In the aftermath of the explosion that totally destroyed a building in Paris's 5th arrondissement, and affected several others, leaving 6 people injured in an absolute emergency, the mayor of the 5th arrondissement, speaking to France Bleu Paris, said that a legal and psychological support service had been set up.

Around a hundred people were evacuated after a building exploded on Wednesday evening: some residents of rue Saint-Jacques, in Paris's 5th arrondissement, still don't know when they'll be able to return home, says arrondissement mayor Florence Berthout, speaking to France Bleu Paris. Although the mayor's office was preparing to accommodate local residents directly in its village hall, this was not necessary in the end: "All the people have been rehoused," says the mayor. We had a huge outpouring of solidarity, with people arriving until very late to offer rooms, so in the end we didn't have to house anyone" in the town hall.
