Gas-related explosions and fire

The explosion occurred in Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque, a village in the south of the country

Seven people, including two children – one of whom was a newborn baby – have died after a suspected gas explosion rocked a small southern French town in the early hours of Monday morning.

A loud explosion was heard around 1:30am local time in one of the main areas of Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque, located about fifteen kilometers from Perpignan.

Apparently, the fire spread to the other side of the street.

The blast is said to have occurred on the ground floor of a three-story building. The ground floors were occupied by a grocery store and a fast-food stand. The fire proceeded up through the building.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Emergency services discovered five dead bodies in the rubble, while two people were declared missing, according to local media. It is believed that two children, one of whom was a newborn baby, were among the dead.

“An explosion followed by a fire killed at least 7 people in the Pyrénées-Orientales. I am interrupting my trip to Montpellier to go there,” Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said in a tweet. “I give my full support to the mobilized state services and to the inhabitants. My thoughts go out to the victims and their loved ones,” he added.

An investigation has been opened to determine the causes of the explosion, public prosecutor Jean-David Cavaillé told the press at a briefing.

“The presence of gas cylinders seems to be confirmed, but we will give investigators time to check the contents of the shops,” he added.

Sidenotes:

Anyway, the main theme is slowing down of the rotation of the earth and how this may relate to many things going on at present including global warming/cooling/climate change, as well as the "opening up" of the Earth in terms of releasing elements like more easily such as heat, oil, methane (and probably other gases, some of them more deadly than others), changes in gravity that may or may not affect the likelihood of one place attracting comets/meteors over another, and so on. Just all kinds of considerations to take into account.

HAVEN, Kan. (KWCH) - 7:15 p.m. Update: The Reno County Emergency Management director tells the Hutch Post that there will be a large, potentially loud gas release at the site of Thursday’s explosions in Haven around 7:15 to 7:30 p.m.

Weishaar said releases from the Tenawa Gas facility are routine, but given the situation earlier in the day, he wanted to alert the public before this release.

7:10 p.m. Update: K-96 has reopened in Reno County following an explosion at the Tenawa Gas plant near Haven. Kent Road remains closed. Those who were forced to evacuate the area within a two-mile radius of the plant have also been allowed back in.

6:25 p.m. Update: Firefighters are still working to extinguish a fire that left two people injured in Reno County on Thursday. Both were taken to the hospital, but the emergency manager says their injuries are minor.

Crews were called to an explosion and fire at the Tenawa Gas plant near Haven around 1:15 p.m. A two-mile radius around the plant was evacuated. While gas to the plant has been cut off but the fire is still not out.

The plant is listed as a cryogenic processing plant by the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce. The plant is used to separate natural gas that comes from wells into different components. The process involves dropping the gas to a very low temperature in order to allow for the separation before the gas is transported elsewhere by pipeline.

Because this line is considered an interstate line, it does not fall under the authority of the Kansas Corporation Commission but rather the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.

We do have a call into the agency. We will continue to follow this story and bring you any new updates throughout the night.

3:50 p.m. Update: Two people have been transported to a hospital in Wichita following an explosion and fire at the Tenawa Haven Gas Plant. Reno County Emergency Manager Adam Weishaar said they only suffered minor injuries.

Crews were called to the fire on Kent Road around 1:15 p.m. on Thursday. Weishaar said they were met with heavy smoke and flames as well as some explosions.

“The biggest difficulties, we immediately evacuated within a two-mile radius from this thing. About a half-mile away, you could feel the heat and see the smoke coming off of it, so it was imperative to get that big perimeter set up that way our units weren’t at risk, and with that, getting the gas shut off, getting close enough to those gas valves,” said Weishaar.

Tami Lindt lives just over a mile and a half away from the Tenawa Haven Gas Plant. She was one of the homeowners who was asked to leave. She said when the initial explosion happened, everything in her house shook. Hours later, she’s still in shock after seeing the explosion.

“I was sitting in the house and all of a sudden I heard this noise that I actually thought was a jet or a giant plane above the house and then I heard an explosion and I thought something. Actually, I thought a plane had crashed and everything in the house was vibrating. I ran out of the house and flames were shooting out everywhere,” said Lindt.

She said all of her family lives in the area, so when they were asked to evacuate, she grabbed her dogs and started coming up with an escape plan.

Weishaar said the Reno County Commission signed a local disaster declaration to allow for state resources to come in and assist with the fire fight.

Units from Burrton, Colwich, McPherson, and Mt. Hope have been called in to assist with the fire. K-96 will remain closed for the next several hours to allow firefighters to transport the foam and water needed to the fire.

Crews will remain on the scene to monitor the fire. Weishaar said that at this time, there is no risk to public safety.

Update: USD 312 Haven Schools says it is keeping students in place while firefighters work to respond to the fire and explosion at the gas plant in town. The district said parents can come to pick up their students, but students will be bussed as normal when the time comes.

Firefighters are responding to a large explosion and fire at Haven Midstream (formerly the Tenawa Haven Gas plant), northwest of Wichita.

Reno County dispatchers say K-96 is closed east of Yoder and east of Haven.

The City of Haven says it is absolutely imperative that people avoid the area.

Those within Haven City limits are not being evacuated at this time. Evacuations at the Haven Steel plant.

A large explosion has occurred in the market square of the German city of Halle, with reports of at least three injured in the blast, two seriously.

According to focus.de information, a large explosion occurred on the market square in the German city of Halle this evening, Tuesday, September 27. The alleged device is believed to have been planted in the toilet block of the tourist information facilities. Two people were seriously injured and one was slightly injured, said police sources.

Two girls aged 12 and 13 years were seriously injured, while a 51-year-old woman was also hurt. The blast happened at around 6pm local time in the Marktschlosschen on the market square said a police source. “The cause is currently still completely unclear”, added the spokesman.

Rescue workers are reported to be on site with the market square cordoned off by the police. All trams running through the market square have been suspended for the time being. Residents and shops within a 100-metre radius were also evacuated. City authorities have set up a contact point for residents and those affected in the Ratshof.

It is unclear at this point exactly how much damage has been caused to the building where the blast occurred, which has been listed since 1935. Stadtmarketing Halle GmbH has its headquarters in the Marktschlosschen, a patrician house from the late Renaissance. There is also a chocolate bar, which is operated by the traditional company Halloren AG.

This is a breaking news story and we will try to keep you updated as more information becomes available, thank you.

No indications of the source of the fire being gas or if it was intentionally set while the explosions happened after the fact.

A large fire has broken out at a historic Grade II listed building in Leeds city center this evening forcing bars, pubs and restaurant to close and the evacuation of parts of the city centre. The fire, believed to be in Leeds City Council's old planning department building, is on Cookridge Street and 10 fire engines are currently battling the blaze. It reportedly began shortly before 8pm, but has since engulfed huge sections of the property and can be seen from miles away. The Leonardo building is currently being renovated and was being transformed into student accommodation. Witnesses to the fire reported hearing 'loud explosions' coming from the building site as the flames spread. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said that the fire was reported to them at 7:47pm and that they had firefighters from seven different stations in attendance alongside special teams. In a statement, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the incident is ongoing and that the top three floors of the building are alight. There is a safety cordon in place and surrounding buildings have been evacuated by emergency services. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is working with West Yorkshire Police and Yorkshire Ambulance Service in its response to the blaze.

Three household gas explosions occur in different parts of Russia in one day
12:35 PM · Dec 5, 2022
Three gas explosions took place in apartment buildings in Russia on December 4-5. Household gas explosions occurred in the cities of Nizhnevartovsk (Northern Russia), Yaroslavl and Zavolzhye (Central Russia).

The information about those who were hurt in the explosions is yet to be specified. The head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations flew to Nizhnevartovsk — people were buried under the rubble in extreme low temperatures there (-16-23C).
A state of emergency was implemented in Nizhnevartovsk.

First reports about the explosion in Nizhnevartovsk on Mira Street appeared on December 4, at around 16:00 Moscow time. The power of the explosion caused floor structures to collapse, which subsequently triggered the partial collapse of second and third floors.

The apartment building was not connected to the gas network. The depressurization of a gas cylinder is believed to be the main version of the incident. Local residents said that shortly before the explosion, several large containers of gas were allegedly delivered to one of the apartments.

Rescuers have already found elements of the exploded containers.

According to other sources, the explosion took place when a tenant was preparing a gas cylinder for a fishing trip.
It was originally reported that six people were killed and five were injured in the gas explosion in Nizhnevartovsk.

The following day the information was corrected: one person was killed, seven others went missing, two are believed to be buried under the rubble.

In total, seven people went missing as a result of the explosion in Nizhnevartovsk. On December 5, temperatures in the city dropped to -20 degrees Centigrade.

Another gas explosion occurred in Yaroslavl

The incident occurred in Yaroslavl on December 5. As in the previous case, the explosion took place as a result of the improper operation of gas equipment. The explosion seriously damaged one apartment, as well as about a hundred square meters of the roof of the residential building. Two people were injured. The 40-year-old owner of the apartment suffered multiple burns and was hospitalized in serious condition.

Because of the explosion in Yaroslavl, a criminal case was initiated under Article 238 of the Criminal Code ("Performance of work that does not meet the requirements for the safety of life and health of consumers”).

Explosion in Nizhny Novgorod region

On December 5, a gas explosion occurred in a residential building in the city of Zavolzhye in the Nizhny Novgorod Region. After the explosion, a fire started in the building. Tenants had to be evacuated. The epicenter of the explosion was on the second floor — the shock wave demolished the walls between three apartments. According to preliminary data, no one was injured.

Andrey Shevchenko, Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Federal Structure and Regional Policy, said that senators were preparing amendments to the Code of Administrative Offences, according to which inspection organisations will be punished for violations when inspecting gas equipment in residential buildings.

With the onset of cold weather, gas explosions began to occur across the country.
  • On December 3, an explosion occurred in the Astrakhan region;
  • on November 23 equipment exploded in the Novosibirsk region;
  • on November 22 an explosion occurred in the Moscow region;
  • on November 9 — in Dagestan;
  • on October 26 — in Izhevsk.
The gas explosion on Sakhalin was the deadliest. The blast caused a large section of an apartment bloc to collapse completely. Nine were killed, four of them were children. After the explosion, mourning was declared in the city.
