GMO Apples

I heard about this on the car radio coming home from work. They want to genetically modify apples so they won't produce the enzyme that causes them to turn brown so quickly after slicing them.

I found an article about it on Yahoo. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101129/ap_on_bi_ge/us_food_and_farm_brown_apples

I wish they'd leave our food alone!

"They look like apple trees and grow like apple trees and produce apples that look like all other apples and when you cut them, they don't turn brown," Carter said. "The benefit is something that can be identified just about by everybody."

If it didn't come from the president of the company I would swear that statement was sarcasm.

It is blatantly obvious that the actual effect of gene manipulation is really secondary in all of this (apples that don't turn brown? Give me a break. How trivial can you get?). It's all about ownership of the food chain. They can manipulate the food to do this or that; I don't think it really matters to them beyond predicting what the public will more readily accept. At the end of the day, they just want to own it on a genetic level. Every apple, every fruit, every vegetable, every animal, every molecule that anyone on planet Earth swallows, patented, owned and making money. It's disgusting.
