Gollum's Bread (Funny Incident)

The Living Force
Something funny happened to me today and I thought I'd share it.

I went to the meat store to pick up some nice fish. At the meat store I go to, they also carry all sorts of other things like bread, eggs, frozen foods etc..

While I was waiting for the girl to ring me up, there was a woman standing next to me who had 2 bags of garlic bread on the counter where I was standing. The bags of the bread were turned over, so there was no markings and it was a silver cover so you couldn't see inside.

The cashier asked me if the bags were mine, and as she said that.. the woman standing next to me snapped at her covering the bread with her hands. "NO! Stay Away! These are MINE!" the cashier girl was stunned and said oookay... and began to ring me up. Her debit machine was a bit slow so it took a few minutes to start working. As I stood there, I looked at the lady, and asked what the bags were. She replied with a jolt, "Garlic bread! And it's all mine! They were all sold out the last time I came here, so this time I'm taking 2. One for now, and one for the freezer! These are THE BEST Garlic bread!"

I replied, "I see... I don't eat bread". and She looked at me so shocked. "YOU DON'T EAT BREAD?"

At that moment the cashier had the debit ready so I paid and we exchanged no other words. The lady kept looking at me weird as if I was an alien or something cause I didn't eat bread!

She kind of reminded me of Gollum the way she covered that bread stating it was hers. I almost though she was going to start petting it and say "MY Precious!"

It was funny but kind of sad too.. her mentality was really messed up . Probably from eating all that bread...

I've noticed people reacting this way as well when they learn that I don't eat bread. It's incomprehensible to them, unthinkable, just plain weird. Usually they'll say "well you MUST eat bread sometime, even once in a while, " and when I say no, I NEVER eat bread and haven't for years, then comes the blank look. But I guess, bread addiction is so normal, so widespread, so much a part of our culture, that the very idea of not eating it just doesn't compute.

It is annoying when you meat people for a meal and they notice that you do not eat bread, the questioning follows and they look at you in amusement.

Oh garlic bread...my precious! :P

Once, I brought a to-go box to work from a local restaurant, containing a bun-less burger topped with bacon. A co-worker got curious and asked what in the world I was eating. "A burger with no bun."

"Why wouldn't you want a bun?"

"Well, I don't eat bread."

His confusion was pretty obvious, as if it was the strangest thing he'd ever heard. "But bread is GOOD for you!"

 I didn't quite know what to say to that, and just kind of smiled and kept eating. The poor guy was thrown through such a loop that I felt sorry for him. He already thought I was a weirdo for being a smoker, so I'm sure the bread thing was just icing on the cake.

My Mom used to do the same thing at a local bakery. She developed a repore with the owner so she could
have first pick of the glazed donuts for church socials.

I can't even stand the smell of baked goods anymore. Bread baking is ok, but anything else and I feel kind of sick.

The smell of packed bread at the supermarket makes me nauseated, but the smell of bread or croissants being baked is still delicious. If my body wouldn't react so violently to gluten, I would have indulged many times already. :-[
I still bake some low-gluten stuff every now and then (no wheat tho) and makes me feel quite miserable when I eat it, even if it's one small slice.

Talking about being around bread in a store reminded me of being at my butcher. Been going there for years so he knows I like fatty meat. Anyway, I'm looking around and say "Man, There's a lotta fat on that one. MMMmmm. I mean marbleing... I'll take THAT one. Just the way I like it!.!.!"

The butcher just rolls his eyes while people look at me like :umm: :umm: :umm:
Thank gawd we're friends...

Even people who are completely brainwashed about saturated fat are well aware that it is the fat content which makes meat and other things taste good. They will deny themselves this one pleasure while continually indulging in all sorts of things which are terribly bad for them. Same with smoking. You would think this society was completely crazy if you didn't know how this disinformation was so pervasive and unrelenting, and even then...

Yep, I agree with you Ben about those who have not been exposed to the concepts of lifelong mental programming. Nor does many even want to think about out the box concepts.
For myself, besides bacon, I cannot think of anything better than a large piece of fat attached to a piece of meat when it comes off a fire grill.
MMMmmm... drool...

It shocks me that people would still be shocked today that there are some people who don't eat bread, given that celiac disease is much more in the public awareness than it was even 5 years ago. Or don't they make the connection that bread = gluten (in most cases)?

Among other things bread raises the blood sugar to a high level. I think that bread can be regarded as a drug. This is why so hard for people to stop eating bread, despite having the knowledge.

The way some people are with bread really is quite ridiculous nowadays but it is the addiction and lack of education that has them lost. People always ask me how I've lost so much weight and when I tell them the foods I've cut out, they lose it when I get to bread. Like they would love to join the fun and lose the weight but they would never consider giving up that bread. I was never really that attached to bread although I used to eat it every now and then it was never some kind of delicacy to me but reading about how it loads people up with sugar, I now understand why they act the way they do. Addicted and don't even know it.

Yeah, (UNHEALTHY) food addiction is a major part of the overall (unhealthy) addictions plaguing humanity at present.

It's funny how people react to the thought of giving up bread - or it would be if I did not know about the opiate properties of bread. I also have had people asking me how I lost weight - but when I tell them that I don't eat bread, their eyes glaze over and they shut down. Case closed - giving up bread - not an option. It's sad.

One of my strategies for getting past the weird looks is to tell people I am allergic to wheat. I mention that I used to have migraines - and they only went away when I quit eating all forms of gluten. Then I add that my doctor (person of authority :P) made me quit. Then all is well - the "doctor" card stops all questions. It's quite fascinating to see how people react.

In my case, that is absolutely true. People just don't understand that gluten means bread in most cases. For example, yesterday I went out to visits my mom and we went to lunch at a restaurant.

My mom has told me repeatedly in the past that she has IBS and stomach problems, and I've told her to cut out all gluten, bread, dairy etc... And she always tells me she has. So yesterday at the restaurant, for appetizers the waiter brought us some bread and houmous. My mom started eating it and I told her, you know... these are the kinds of things you have to stop eating so you can stop your digestive problems. And she was like but I never eat like this only once in a while I have a couple of pieces, besides what's wrong with bread? So I went into the fact that bread/wheat is all gluten and she came out and basically said she didn't understand what gluten really was. So I told her to look it up in wiki when she gets a chance. (she ate that whole plate of bread and houmous btw)

Now, here is a woman who recently went for a colonoscopy, on the basis that the "doctors" couldn't figure out what was wrong with her digestive system. And even after I told her to cut out all gluten for at least 6 months, she decided not to listen to me and go have this surgery - which the resaults for was that "yes she has IBS". I mean she had to go to a colonoscopy and now she's on a couple of meds she has to take for the rest of her life. And instead of doing all that, she could have just listened to me and cut out bread/gluten/dairy and lived a happier life.
