Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson

Beelzebub's Tales uses the framing device of the musings of an extraterrestrial known as Beelzebub (who shares a name with the demon of the same name) to his grandson Hassein, as they travel through space towards Beelzebub's home planet, Karatas, on the spaceship Karnak. Beelzebub recounts his adventures and travails amongst the "three-brained beings" (humans) of the planet Earth. Beelzebub details the history, customs and psychology of humanity and relates the esoteric theory behind the workings of the universe.

I find lots of downloadable pdf's here but only 2 related to Gurdjieff and lots of other formats or loans of texts for us highlighters (see readwise and glasp plugin). TY

I'm just starting to read this book and it has already made me laugh twice until tears greeted me and I'm only in the prologue.

Not because what he says is nonsense, but because of his disrespectful tone towards himself and the reader.

It is deeply refreshing.

At the moment I'm really enjoying it.
A lot of people miss just how funny Gurdjieff was. Or at least, they don't comment on it. In addition to all his other skills, he was a great comedian.

A small example:

Whatever it is, I'll begin...
Yes, but with what to begin?

Ah! devils! Is that strange and unpleasant feeling I experienced three weeks ago going to come back, when I was working out in my mind the program and the order of ideas I had decided to propagate, without knowing with what to begin either?

I could not have defined that feeling except with these words: "the fear of being submerged in the sea of my own thoughts."

To make that unpleasant feeling stop, I could have resorted to the fatal faculty that I possess like all contemporaries - since it has become inherent to us - of "putting it off until tomorrow," without feeling the slightest pang of conscience.

And I could easily have "put it off until tomorrow," for I still had time ahead of me; but today, alas! that is not possible, and whatever the cost, "even if I burst," I must begin.

But really, with what to begin?

Hurrah! ...Eureka! ...
Almost every book I have ever read began with a preface. It will therefore be necessary for me, too, to begin with something of the sort.
I say "of the sort," because never in my entire life, almost from the moment I knew how to distinguish a girl from a boy, have I done anything, absolutely nothing, like my fellow bipeds, destroyers of the goods of Nature; that is why I must now - I am even forced to do so on principle - write differently than any other writer would.
:-D

The last example, as I could go on with almost the whole introduction:

My very dear, very honest, very resolute and certainly very patient Gentlemen, and my very dear, charming and impartial Ladies... Excuse me! I was going to forget the main thing: and my not at all hysterical Ladies!
I have the honour to declare to you that due to certain conditions imposed on me in these last stages of the process of my life, I am indeed preparing to write books, although without having written so far the slightest work, not the slightest "instructive article", not even one of those letters in which one would have to respect what they call "grammar"; So that today, although I have become a "professional writer," I have no practice of the established literary rules and procedures, nor of the "literary language of good taste," and I am forced to write in a manner different from the ordinary "patented" writers, to the manner to which you have long been so accustomed, as to your own smell.
In my opinion, what is annoying to you in all this is that, from childhood, you have been instilled with an automatism that has been perfectly harmonized with your general psyche, and which functions ideally for the perception of every new impression, so that this "benefit" saves you in the future, in the course of your responsible life, from any need to make the slightest individual effort. :-D
