Grammar as a Pet Peeve

Evan

The Living Force
I could’ve sworn there already was a thread devoted to this, particularly when considering @Laura ’s absolute hair-yanking frustration with it!😂

Okay I’ll start: In what English first language country with…I don’t know..a school? do people learn that There’s means There are? Example: “There’s none of those around here.” It’s epidemic! On every tv show created by…I don’t know…professional writers??. Virtually every X post. And saddest to me, on my local Nextdoor app, where presumably most of these illiterate troglodytes attended the very same primary through high schools that I did.

Okay I’m done. Good lord that feels better!

If you find a typo or a grammatical error in the above post, please excuse it to my ongoing recovery from brain poisoning (true fact. I was discharged from the hospital Saturday night!).

Starting a sentence with 'Like...'. I have not seen it on these boards, but across the interwebs there's an epidemic... Just a little twinge of anger each time I see it!

Just some examples that could have come from this this thread, it would have been infuriating...:

'Like, I could’ve sworn there already was a thread devoted to this...'

'Like, One of my pet peeves is the lack of distinction between ‘theirs’ and ‘there’s’...'

'Like, Stewie Griffin takes issue with improper grammar as well'

Aaaaahh...!

This is hilarious. There must be some universal thing about it, because while I don't have NextDoor, I do look at my local community Facebook page and it is an identical experience. For some reason or another, the level of English is at its absolute lowest in these local community groups, and I can't work out why! The average person can't tell the difference between "there", "their" and "they're", let alone know how to use a full-stop (period) or comma!

That's strange, because I'm sure text can be written to be read, or written to be spoken. Unless they're reading aloud what they read on those boards... which is still strange.

Fun fact : I challenged my kids one day to go one hour without saying the word "Like"
I thought this could be easy enough, since you can substitute "Like" with phrases such as "Similar to" or "As if"

They both laughed and said "That's easy" to then go on to fail the test within 10 minutes, and realise how they had no control over this programming.

I then offered them $100 each if they could go a whole day without saying "Like" and they both immediately refused, knowing they couldn't possibly do it.

My faves:

Your and you’re. “Your fantastic!” My fantastic what?
Also: “My husband and I’s house is in the country.” I’ve heard that one a few times.
And: “Between you and I” is fairly common.

It’s and its
Who’s and whose
Punkin pie rather than pumpkin pie, Valentime’s day rather than Valentine’s :umm:
Using ‘brought’ as the past tense for buy (i.e. bought)
‘I seen this’ rather than ‘I saw this’
Misusing & confusing infer and imply
Misusing apostrophes when it’s a plural, for eg.. ‘there are many schools here’ vs ‘there are many school’s here’
Who and whom

To name just a few. :-D I’m sure we had a thread on this at some stage in the past but it’s always good to have a rant anew lol!
