Great North Run in 8 days - today pulled calf muscle - help needed urgently

Hi Vic,

Hopefully you will be able to fix your calf muscle for the weekend, I know from experience Laura's tape and DMSO solution works, it's standard procedure here for just such injuries.

Wishing you good luck in your run, whether or not you can complete it for the charity I'm sure they will understand, besides the supporting 'Geordies' will help you over the line, they are like that.

Tomorrow, I shall be flying from Australia to South Shields (my home town), the finishing line for the Great North run, which I shall make a point of going to see knowing that a forum member will be in it.

What is the procedure for sponsoring you as I'd like to do it to help your charity?

Hi Vic
In my humble opinion, I think you should check the extent of your injury. I think you may have a hamstring muscle or strain (not sure if it is the correct term). If it were the case, I hope not, you would need more time to rest. I think so.
Approximately a year and half ago I had a torn right deltoid, without any extra effort, just get off the couch. This coincided with a difficult period, which opened my awareness to other realities after reading Laura's books.
Again, four months ago, I had the same problem in the left deltoid, coinciding with the opening of the new knowledge of diet and nutrition.

Good Luck! :)

I have had similar thoughts, Ariadne. I am wondering if this injury is something to do with increasing knowledge - knowledge that is a threat to some. I had another strange happening yesterday. My wife and I went into the city as we needed to get a few things done. First we decided on a costa coffee. We walked into one costa but both felt negative atmosphere in there so we went to another one round the corner. We went in - various customers sat relaxing, drinking, reading etc - ordered our coffees and got the points put on our loyalty card. Suddenly the power went and all the lights went out.

Despite this everyone seemed relaxed, including us. We were unable to get our coffee so we left with free points on our card - everyone sitting in darkness. Not a big thing I know. But from there we went to various places and every time we were treated like VIPs. We had never experienced so much kindness, consideration, help, and efficiency from so many shop staff, in what was an hour or so.

That was an incredibly positive, but strange experience. I don't know if it was also related to new knowledge, but nothing is accidental.

Despite the fact that I have been searching and researching for decades I am now seeing things in a different light - in a different way - less fear, if any. Before it was all mildly manic.

You may want to use some regular, wide slightly stretchy bandaging tape on your leg for right now while waiting for supplies. That will get the healing going fast. And then, be sure when you run that you are taped.

after the Great North Run I will work all out to lose the self importance, aswell as go on the strict Paleo/Ketogenic diet - :halo:

Actually, if I were in your shoes I'd cut out any inflammatory foods right away. My thinking is that it should help the healing process to not have more inflammation than the injury needs. This includes gluten, dairy, nightshades, nuts and sugar. I actually had my back seize up for several days just from eating cashews (I had a previous injury at the inflamed area).

I think Ariadna's suggestion of getting your injury checked out is also a good idea. It's easy to say 'I'll deal with it later', and it doesn't hurt to better understand your situation.

Hi Renaissance

I don't touch dairy apart from organic butter, gave up gluten a couple of months ago, stopped liking tomatoes a couple of weeks ago (the only nightshades I ate) and use Stevia in place of sugar. I have been having a handful of Walnuts and Brazil nuts lately but I'll leave them on your advice.

You are right - I need to understand my situation better, and I am trying to do that. It takes weeks to get a doctor's appointment, and months for an xray, so I'm identifying problem online. I am as certain as I can be that I have pulled the Soleus muscle - location ties in with information.

If this had all happened weeks ago I could have approached it differently. But that was my last run, a very easy run, before the actual event - significantly strange.

Thanks for the info on inflammation. I am acting on it.

Brilliant that you will be at the run. I'll be wearing a yellow running vest with FARPLACE ANIMAL RESCUE written on it. You never know!

Geordies - I love 'em. Went to St James Park for King Alan's last game a few years back. The people were fantastic. I don't have any interest in football these days. All part of growing up I think.

Do you live in Australia and are visiting your home town. Or were you visiting Australia?

I have a sponsorship page online if you would like to sponsor me (I'm hope I'm allowed to do this) Sponsor Vic on The Great North Run

Thanks again

Thanks, Laura

I've got some in the first aid box so I'll put one on now :)

Hi Vic,

Such a nuisance that the problem happened on the final preparation run. All the good advice here should help over the next 6 days.

A very worthy cause you're running for. I've made a donation through Paypal - hope they don't chew it up in fees. I'll be looking out for you at the finish line, although there are usually thousands of people. A needle in the haystack situation

Living in Oz,, but born & bred S/S, this is sort of my annual pilgrimage to see the family. This will be a nice start, helping you help the animals - Best of luck :)

I really appreciate your donation, Lindenlea. Thank you ;)

I better listen out for an Aussie accent at the finish line then - unless you've been able to hang on to your Geordie accent.

Thanks again

Vic

Hi Vic. You got a lot of really good advice to go on. I was wondering if you have considered deep tissue massage? I know for me deep tissue massage helped tremendously in the healing process. For sprains, it can get the circulation moving and if you have a muscle that`s in spasm, deep tissue massage can really do wonders to release the spasm. I was fortunate enough to find a therapist who really new her stuff. She got to the root of the problem by working on the muscle til it released. It was painful but well worth it FWIW.

Yes, and I'm using all the advice. The only thing I haven't yet got is the DMSO. The supplier said it was in stock when it wasn't. But I'll be collecting some DMSO this evening. I've still got 3 days for healing. I've got the Kinesio tape on, and I'm using all the other substances that were suggested.

I know exactly where I can get deep tissue massage so I'll nip over there tomorrow after work and get some done.

Thanks Nancy2feathers - it's appreciated.

Hey Vic, good luck for tomorrow's event. Hopefully you've healed up enough to still participate. A weekend of athletics consisting of the Great North CityGames & the Triathlon World Championship Series. We might even see you on the telly! ;D

Thanks everyone ;)

I'm back home now. We went up the day before the run and came back today. I'm ecstatic to say that I completed the run. I can only put it down to the advice you all gave me.

Going into the run I still felt discomfort in my calf muscle. Then in the first mile I felt it twang, and I ended up basically running two thirds on my good leg. But my bad leg didn't get any worse, which is incredible. I had been using DMSO for the four days previously, and I used Kinesio tape on, not only the calf muscle, but also achilles and knee, just to give it extra support.

I ran it in 2 33 which I am very pleased about. Fully fit my target was 2 20 or less.

Thanks again to everyone. I believe that I would not have been able to do it without using the substances and materials you suggested.
