The Force is Strong With This One
I recently watched Green Card (1990) with Andie MacDowell and Gerard Dépardieu. If you're unfamiliar, it's a romantic comedy where the main characters, Brontë and Georges, marry for convenience (she wants an apartment that can only be rented to a married couple and he is French and wants to remain in the US), but once they finally get to know each other they do fall in love.
There's a moment in the middle of the movie when they are truly getting to know each other where Brontë tells Georges he's "right wing." He replies that he is no wing! She is the one with the wing - all her ideas come from the same place. I found this pretty compelling and synchronistic to the lessons I'm taking in lately. There's also a really funny bit about how Georges hates vegetarians and tells Brontë to stop eating birdseed!
*** Spoilers Below! *** The movie is available on Hoopla, which I accessed with my library card.
I had a good cry at the end of the movie. They finally fall in love, but not until after Georges messes up in his interview and gets himself deported. Watching two people in love being separated, possibly for the rest of their lives, was painful for me. And I realized then what staying in my non-colinear relationship is costing me: the opportunity to feel truly seen and known in an intimate relationship with another person. *sigh*
