You've heard this story before...except for how it ends. Old man lives at home alone, someone breaks in and attacks him...that part is "normal". Old man runs out of home to a neighbor, police arrive and find the intruder face down in a tub with the water running, with self-inflicted knife wounds all over himself.

Yeah...face down

Just who was the intruder was remains a mystery.

Capt. Kenneth Bakalar said that a check of the fingerprints with Connecticut's database of fingerprints turned up nothing. "So that means that this individual hasn't been arrested in the last eight years or so," he said. "Our next step will be to do a national check with the IAFIS, or the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System. But that will take more time."

In any event, police say that the individual apparently isn't known to be a troublemaker, at least locally. "If he went missing from, say, a halfway house, we probably would have known about it by now," the captain said.

Upon arriving, police found the intruder dead, face down in the bathtub with the water running.

Because the intruder was bleeding during the ordeal, the home will have to be professionally cleaned before Smith would be allowed back in. Smith didn't require a visit to the hospital.

Stratford EMS technicians responding to the home quickly determined that the intruder had died.

Throughout the day on Friday, detectives could be seen donning sanitary booties and rubberized gloves before entering the home.

Is this regular procedure when someone bleed during a fight or else. I find those to be extreme. Was the man on drug or was he contagious from some unknown disease.

He was bleeding coming up the road to the old man's house, they backtracked him to a point about 400 yards away when they lost the trail. The man was a complete unknown, not in the print records, not escaped from a local half-way house or mental health facility, and they have no idea until probably Monday when the autopsy report is complete whether the man was on drugs or not. Interesting that he was barefoot, but wearing socks, which were severely worn from walking.

***edit
But then, this is the same town where "Dick Cheney" took the police for a wild goose chase :)
