Hurricane Irene

http://www.power-eng.com/articles/2011/08/nuclear-power-plants-prepare-for-expected-hurricane.html

As of the morning of August 25, a number of nuclear power plants appeared to be within the storm’s projected path: Brunswick, Harris, Indian Point, Pilgrim, Millstone, Surry, Seabrook, Vermont Yankee, Limerick, Calvert Cliff, Peach Bottom, Three Mile Island, Susquehanna and Salem. Of those, the plants further inland and to the north would likely see less impact, according to weather models from the Weather Channel.

Woah! Take care everyone.
The images of that thing remind me of the super storms on the film, the day after tomorrow.
I would not want to be in the path of that!

Keep yourselves safe, everyone, and do what is necessary to survive this monster storm.
So many nuclear reactors. Sounds like another Fukushima writ large.
Again, please do whatever you have to do to survive.

Thank you guys!

I'll be stocking in water, food, flashlights amongst others.. Can anyone with experience suggest what else is a good idea to have on a situation like this? I don't think I'm gonna be able to travel to avoid this one, so I'm most likely staying in the area.
This is the first time I will be experiencing anything like this, and what are the odds right after an earthquake

And everyone from the EE group in NYC, I've been away for quite sometime but my thoughts are with you guys, stay safe

As an update, mayor Bloomberg has said that all mass transportation will be shut down in NYC starting Saturday afternoon-evening, is this is the first time this is to be done?

Take a look at the picture that's on the article that an astronaut tweeted of Irene.

Hmph, and here I thought the media was exaggerating. Ill do some extra food shoppin tonight just in case, doesn't look like it'll hit NYC until Sunday-Monday. For anyone in the area, here's the flood-zone map: http://project-s3.wnyc.org/news-maps/hurricane-zones/hurricane-zones.html

I'm up in Columbus circle on the fifth floor with solid bedrock underneath us, so I think we'll be okay. The only problem might be our ceiling leaking.

Yes it is, and while the North Anna reactors shut down automatically when the Earthquake hit, the Surry reactors DID NOT, and they should have with the shaking Blackwater got. I was told that North Anna's diesel generators failed after a few hours too.

A large enough storm surge could EASILY flood the Surry reactors, and they are some of the oldest in the nation, owned by a company that doesn't like to pay for upgrades and repairs.

This also looks like another "loss related to water" situation from Laura's latest Dot Connector Astro-Matrix.

You'll be all in my prayers, guys. I hope that you are all stoked-up and you are safe.

I would suggest a radio that operates with batteries, and it could come handy if you have one of those old phones that don't require electricity to work.

And keep us posted when you can, ok?
