I would like to offer to sell lard to forum members. The price would be 8-11 dollars per lb for lard from back fat. And 10-13 dollars per lb for leaf lard from the kidney fat. Those prices are for united states.

It's not mine. I purchase it from a farm. that price listed above is the total cost, factored in shipping and profit to me. the variation depends on quantity ordered.

I'm not sure if its appropriate to sell a product on this forum, for profit, but a mod could let me know.

When you say "pretty pricey" do you mean it is expensive? Or not? Because 2 euros a kilo of lard is, for me, not expensive at all. Here lard is not expensive but when I buy lard it cost me more than 2 euros and I buy less than a kilo.

Wetroof is saying 8 to 11 dollars a pound. A pound is about half a kilo. That's 16 to 22 dollars a kilo. EXTREMELY pricey.

In Copenhagen (with danish fat taxing and other market adjustments the price has at least doubled in a year) the unrendered fat is 5 euro+ a kilo, not many eat it in rendered form so you've got to do that yourself, takes a long time but you get some nice cracklings (which are also expensive at the butcher).

I think you might be mixing up Laura's comment to Wetroof's prices and Grini's local price of 2$ a kilo?

From what he said, shipping is included, and lard is heavy. Shipping/handling costs are probably more than the item cost + profit combined. Buying locally is always going to be the best deal, but some people may not have the option.

For shipping in the US, one could use the USPS Priority flat rate boxes, which only have the volume restrictions of the box, but no weight restrictions. I'm not sure how much lard (by weight) would fit into the various boxes, but I think box 2 and box 4 (medium and large cube-like boxes--their names aren't very specific) should fit at least few pounds for the small one and maybe double that for the large. The medium is $11.35 and the large $15.45. They usually arrive in 2 days.

FWIW.

At my local farmers market grass fed lard is about $1 per pound but the problem is that it is rarely in stock. It is shipped about 80 miles to the market and those at the market make a profit off of it as well.

For those in the US lard can be ordered online at US Wellness Meats for $11.75 for 2 pounds with free shipping and $7.50 handling fee per order: http://www.grasslandbeef.com/Detail.bok?no=1218

I would suggest putting up some more information if you really want to offer this service to the forum. For a start, which farm you're getting your lard from as well as the means by which you'd be shipping it so that the reliability of 3rd parties involved, as well as the quality and nature of the lard itself, can be easily verified by members themselves.

Okay - I thought that was a good price, but some of you are getting lard very inexpensively!

I've only bought from the farm twice so far. They sell their products at a farmers market, in the city I live in northern California. The farm is local, I do not know the name. They send their pigs up to Oregon, one state north, to be processed.

The pigs are raised in open fields, but supplemented with soy and corn.

Currently I'm buying for 7 dollars a pound but they have limited quantity.

They way I can achieve the good price is to melt the lard, and pour it directly into a United Stated Postal Service flat rate priority box.

So, the product would be a rectangular block of lard that weighs 1070g (2.36lb) for the smallest size.

The sale price is based on this:

cost of lard + shipping + fee
7.00(2.36) + 5.15 + 3 = 24.52

24.52/2.39 = 10.25$ per lb

If you buy a larger size, I didn't calculate these, it comes to less.

If I just boxed the lard in its prepackaged plastic tubs the shipping is 13 dollars for 2.3 lb. So that is the difference. and its a greater magnitude as weight increases.

This Idea, is because I have never been able to find lard, until I moved more north and found this farm. The local farms to me didn't sell it. Online it is expensive.
And I have really enjoyed the taste of lard in pot roasts / bone broths, as opposed to other rendered fats like ghee or tallow.

Yep, this is the Idea. Also - I sell spices on ebay. and consistently I have sold spices in the medium box - but used a small label that costs 5.15. Basically pretended the medium box is a small box, And it got through postage every-time. silly USPS. I have my mailman pick it up with a prepaid label instead of going into the post office to ship.

I'm not sure the quantity the medium box would hold: 5-10lb of lard? and I could probably ship that for the same 5.15 rate.

I'll look into the exact cost of this. you must order 75.00 dollars total or more from wellness. I'll see what that comes out to when I have the chance.

Buying 10 pounds of lard from US Wellness meats would be $66.25 including shipping. That is even cheaper than what you are buying the lard for from your farmers. I couldn't find if they feed their pigs any grains but they talk about the dangers of feeding grains on their website so it may also be a higher quality product than what you are getting.

Now I understand. True: very very expensive.
