I was shot at yesterday

I am trying to be calm. Even after a night of sleep I am still frazzeled. Yesterday bullets went wizzing by our house right next to our heads. A land owner next to us is a wealthy gun freak and only uses the property for hunting and shooting. I called the police and they showed up 20 minutes later. The guns being used are high powered rifles that make it sound like war.
One bullet was so close it sounded like something traveling down a wire very fast in the ear. Two other bullets sounded like they hit rock on our property. The police said no one is dead, so no big deal! :scared: This was rapid fire at ME! When did it become o.k. to be shot at? We called some other people that live near by to warn them. One couple stated that yes they were sitting on the porch and three bullets wizzed by and they were thinking about calling the cops. What? Just thinking about calling? What has happened to people that being shot at does not even phase anyone?
I am being told that I am over reacting. I WAS ALMOST SHOT!!!!! Those guys left before the cops arrived and so they said "well, they are gone sorry.... we cant do anything". Ok so nobodys home, sorry the killer left, time to take a lunch break? To make it even better the cop cars could not make it up the hill so we had to provide our ATV for their use.
Sorry, I'm ranting here but I feel like I have gone mad. I just wanted to share with my mental family. Just knowing that not everyone is so deep asleep helps me to not scream. I feel that if I were to open my mouth to scream now, I might not be able to stop. I feel soooooo angry

Definitely a frightening experience, glad no one was hurt. Who do you believe was shooting, was it the neighbour? Do you think it was actually directed to kill / injure you? Or maybe it was someone losing it and firing randomly? Either way, it's for certain crazy the police aren't investigating it, sounds like a real threat there to your's and other people's safety. The police of course are reneging on their duty, so it might be a good idea to follow up on it, go back to the station go up the ladder if you have to and re-state the fact it's a public threat and highly dangerous to have someone shooting either randomly or intentionally - because it certainly is, and this is the job the police are employed to perform.

Sorry that you had to feel that way. In a world run by lunatics, abnormal behavior is the new normality. It makes one wonder how this world is still going...

Yes, it was the neighbor shooting. I do not believe it was aimed for me but was reckless crazy rapid fire into the air. This is the second time this has happened. Cops in bullet proof vests telling me to chill is not my idea of a good sunday. I do plan on following up, but my emotions are whipping the heck out of my horses right now. I think my cart driver was shot down in the gunfire yesterday. Hehe
After dealing with that mentality I dont really even know what to say to the police department?

I'm sorry to hear that that happened, Horseofadifferentcolor--it sounds like quite a terrifying experience!

If it were me, especially since it sounds like this has happened before, I'd be looking to move from that area as quickly as possible.

Stay safe and take care :flowers:

Ya, even though I keep reading about this "new normality" I failed to apply any useful knowledge to the situation. I was just kinda gaped mouth about the whole thing. Kinda like what just happened? Was that even real? Why does no one seem to care?

Thanks Foxx. I'm not moving. I dont think there is any safe places to move. This insanity has infected everywhere. I'm going to fight this. I just dont have a game plan yet. I am so thankful for this network to talk to.

If this is a one off, its still their duty to follow it up, because if there's a next time, you or another person might not be so lucky. Look up what their stated duties are, and use that angle, because it sounds to me if they're not following through at all, they (police), are not doing their stated job. Probably though you just encountered some lazy officer who didn't want to write up a report. Chances are you'll find someone else who takes their role in society more seriously. Ive met a fair few helpful cops in my time. Mostly they were, it was more the exceptions that weren't.

I agree. I swear the second officer that showed up 30 min after we called looked like he had just wolk up from a nap!

I'm sorry that happened to you, HorseofaDifferentColor. Sometimes people act very irresponsibly with guns when they're out in the country. I've heard of this happening before with some people I knew in PA. Their neighbors would just practice shooting without regard for the people who lived all around their property and bullets would whiz close by their place too.
My suggestion would be to persist with the police in filing an official complaint. It may or may not help, but at least it will be documented.
You might also consider what has already been suggested here - moving elsewhere - if you get no resolution.
I'm relieved you weren't injured or worse.

Thankyou Lisa, I think about you daily and hope you are feeling better.
It's crazy having my own small scale weak and helpless public self begging for the goverment to come and help me.
I feel I have no power. I have not made any calls yet. My hands are shaking. I'm telling myself to be cool but thats not working out to well. It seems I am more freaked out today than I was with bullets wizzing by my face. Yesterday the cop said " you know, those texas freedom loving, god fearing, gun toters feel they have this right to shoot however they please and there is not much we can do"!

I agree with Laura, get an Attorney who will work with you and protect your rights. It will create a paper trail of time, date, place and event.

I would also suggest, if you don't own one, to buy or rent a Metal Detector.

Since, this event wasn't the first time you experienced high power rifle bullets piercing your air space, so to speak, your property holds evidence of spent bullet casings, either embedded into the surrounding landscape or the building(s) or objects on your property.

To properly document any bullet fragments, you will need the Metal Detector to locate them, a camera to take several "angle shots" and pencil and paper to write you findings. A pair of tweezers (preferly) to place the evidence, in a separate plastic see-through bag (snack or sandwich bag that zips shut) without touching the evidence.

I would do "a walk around your Border Property" with the Metal Detector, then work in small sections to find lodged castings that may have penetrated the ground, trees or objects in the area. Document your findings and continue on to another section of the property, until the whole area has been searched. Then randomly, go over the property again with the Metal Detector, as second measure. Carefully check any building(s) or machinery, vehicles included. Document everything, the best you can. All evidence adds to your Claim (even if the neighbor's don't want to get involved) and helps toward a Legal stance in the event you File Suit or if someone is harmed on your property in the near future.

A Lawyer/Attorney can handle the Legal issues but it is up to you to provide the evidence. Words can be easily manipulated especially by a wealthy Landowner (is a wealthy gun freak and only uses the property for hunting and shooting) but "documented hard evidence and multiples there of" can solidify your Case.

Good advise Laura and Angelburst29. Thankyou. I contacted the game warden for our area and she was very nice and understanding. She said she would send someone to talk to him. Normally she would handle this herself but is in Waco becuase of the explosion. She did say without a bullet we have nothing but our word verses his. I always wanted a metal detector, so I guess that can be one positive thing out of this.
As far as lawyers go....ughhh....from my experience I have only met ones who like rich criminals. The law decides who is right or wrong by the highest bidder.
I found his home address from tax records and I am going to write a letter(what I really want to do is go shoot some really loud firecrackers in his yard at midnight) :P

I wanted to add another suggestion, to label each bit of evidence (A,B, C, etc. or use number's) while photographing and add a brief description of the area found (near house - so many feet from a building, etc.)

Photocopy the photograph's (3X), one for your Attorney, one for the other Attorney, in case it goes Legal and one to present in Court. Keep the original photo's and evidence (plastic baggies) in a safe undisclosed area - possibly off property and NOT in a Safety Deposit Box.

If you need to present solid evidence, other than the photo's, for ballistic testing to identify caliber, give only a "sampling" of the documented contents in the labled plastic bags - (if you have ten bags, only submit 5) EVEN if your Attorney advises, otherwise. In case "evidence - goes missing", you still have documented evidence at your disposal to present in Court. Don't put your eggs all in one basket, so to speak. Remember, your Attorney is there to represent you and your interests, according to Law. In my experience with Attorney's, some of them forget that, while working on personal agenda's of their own.
If you have hard evidence to back up your Claim, you need to protect yourself and the evidence.
