This is very weird

Government officials have tried to track down the company that provided Thamsanqa Jantjie but the owners "have vanished into thin air," said Deputy Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu.

And this

AP journalists who visited the address of the company that Jantjie provided found a different company there, whose managers said they knew nothing about SA Interpreters. A woman answered the phone at a number that Jantjie provided and said it was not for the company, and another phone number went to a voicemail that did not identify the person or company with the number.

I don't know if he is a con-man but it sure looks like a scam.

I heard an interview on the radio with a woman in charge of a sign language association and she said that she wasn't surprised that it happened because there is no official recognized diploma to be an interpreter (at least in my country).
Part of the blame could also be attributed to the persons in charge of hiring an interpreter because there is no way for them to evaluate the real skills of that person if they have a poor knowledge of sign language.

On the other hand, since presidents talk gibberish anyway, the interpreter did some good job at some level :halo:

Obama was too busy taking selfies and goofing around in true psychopath style, so he was clearly too busy to care about anything else.

I had the news on in the background after returning from work earlier, the usual tripe was on loop, but I did catch an interview with this guy. Apart from being painful to watch/listen to, his answer was along the lines of "angels were talking to me." He said some more cringe-worthy stuff but I could barely take it in. I thought it was a mockery of sign- language for someone like him to be up there doing that. With the psychopaths laughing-it-up with their antics, & Mandela supporters just wanting to celebrate his life & not get put to sleep with dreary speeches, the whole thing was quite a mess. Mandela deserved better. :(

I've just heard that the fake sign-interpreter was once accused of rape, theft, murder & kidnapping. Apparently he's being treated for schizophrenia too. This is coming from the television broadcaster eNCA. With the psychopaths (world leaders & other cronies) so near him & the fact that they are normally heavily protected - Obama for instance - could he be a tool for some nefarious action to have taken place? After watching that video of the 7-7 bombings set-up which is on SOTT, & how the BBC showed a programme a year before on how to control the media response to a terrorist attack, I'm more on the lookout for this kind of thing. I hope i'm wrong, it's better to be aware of the possibility still.

This is what I thought. Maybe he was a setup that failed. All the major news players are reporting on this. The article on the guardian was insane and basically is wildly blaming everyone, but seems to be missing the point.

This guy has the same flavor as the Navy yard shooting. It feels like it is setting stage for something else. It smells fishy to me. In the very least it was one more thing to distract from the honor being given. The comments under all the articles bickering among themselves on who is to blame is just like other tragic events, were the main points are overlooked and everyone just wants to point fingers to see who is at fault.

The crazy story of the sign language interpreter from Nelson Mandela’s memorial service just got a little crazier. Not only was he communicating gibberish, he also has a criminal record which included murder charges dating back to 2003. How and why was this man allowed within arms reach of the President and other world leaders?

“I want to share a story with you and tell you that there is definitely something wrong. This just broke from the Times of Israel. According to a South African news network, Thamsanqa Jantjie… faced a rape charge in 1994, theft in 1995, housebreaking charge in 1997, malicious damage to property in 1998, murder, attempted murder, and kidnapping charges in 2003,” Glenn said on radio this morning. “It is unclear whether he ever served time in prison, but what is clear: ‘Many of the charges brought against him were dropped because he was found to be mentally unfit to stand trial.’ Even more bizarrely, it’s not clear whether the murder charge against him in 2003 was ever properly resolved because the court file against him, quote, ‘is mysteriously empty.’”

I have a question regarding this incident because I do not know sign language. Was this guy who was signing "saying" anything, or was it actually all gibberish?

Only reason that I am asking is because the news states that he was saying anything, but not knowing sign language, I honestly could not tell either way and I do not really find the mainstream news to be a trusty source of information.

Well, when I was watching it in the morning (BBC I think) a charity/trust type group for the deaf (supposedly) were talking about the local state tv using a real interpreter who was doing "sign" in the bottom corner of the screen. This was compared with the guy's random gesticulations by the voiceover who, presumably, was giving their account to the BBC. They said that they couldn't understand his movements. Apart from that, it was the usual way the mainstream news works, someone telling viewers how to interpret the pictures on their screen; never mind that the words & pictures barely correlate.

Yeah, I saw something similar on another station.

Its a shame that it has come to me not even trusting something like this coming from the MSN. Was hopping that someone on site knew sign language and would be able to state weather the news was being honest, or if the guy was in fact saying something that they dont want the rest of us to know about.

Though, I suppose that if this man was communicating something else, the deaf community would make it knows....or at least I think they would.

In that vein, I found this gif  :

It still is pretty long though, for a poodle... About half the tail I guesstimate.
But I know what you are hinting at: :pinocchio: ;)
