Introducing Hedy

SevenFeathers

Dagobah Resident
Last November, our sweet lab mix, Lena, crossed to the Rainbow Bridge (Lena ). It's been sad without her. We have finally started feeling a little better and decided to look for another lab mix. Yesterday, we adopted this little girl (about 3 months) from an unplanned litter. She's part Lab and part? Anyway, we think she is pretty and named her Hedy (after Hedy Lamarr). I hope she'll be as smart as Hedy Lamarr, too!

Here's a snapshot:

She is adorable. And so serious-looking. (or is she seriously thinking of what fun things she can do next?) I am very glad that you decided to get another 4-pawed companion. They give us so much love and companionship.

Hedy seems to be having side effects from fenbendazole (Safeguard dewormer). First dose, no problem; second dose, no problem. But the night of the second dose, she tried to vomit (stomach empty), with loud gurgling noises in her belly. That day, her first poop was a little soft. She had no appetite. Second poop attempt later was liquid, as was her third one. In the third one she expelled some worms (long white ones). After that, she started feeling a little better and ate something, but not normal appetite. Then last night, she vomited again. Morning poop, fairly normal, a little soft. She has vomited bile a few times this morning, no appetite of course. So could this be continued worm die off? I did not give her the third dose of fenben since she was sick. How can I help her feel better?

I'm sorry Hedy is having such a hard time! Fenbendazol needs to be taken with food. Did you give it to her with food? You might try giving her some CBD oil. Here in Canada I use something called MediPaws which contains CBD oil when my dog has an upset stomach/lack of appetite which has helped him. He had a very bad reaction to the distemper shot required to move into the senior housing where I am now. He went completely blind (sight came back in a couple of days), lost weight. He was a street dog so now has latent issues from tick bites, extreme levels of protein in his blood.

Did you give it to her with food
Yes, it went in her meals. She had no problem at the time, just when it started killing the worms, I guess.

Since she is a puppy, I didn't want her to go so long without eating or drinking, so I took her to the vet. The vet said that (probably) when the expelled worms came loose from the intestines, it caused little tears that can hurt and also nausea. She gave Hedy an anti nausea shot and once that starts working (in a couple of hours) she should get her appetite back. I'll feed her gently so as not to irritate the gut anymore.

So sorry to hear what happened to your sweet dog when he got the shot. Glad he recovered his sight. He's lucky to have you now.🐶
