China's most senior military officer, who is second only to Xi Jinping, has been put under investigation over alleged "grave violations of discipline and the law."

Another member of the commission, Gen. Liu Zhenli, has also been placed under investigation

No further details have been given regarding the accusations against General Zhang Youxia, but such language is often presented in such crackdowns as a euphemism for corruption.

Xi has described corruption as "the biggest threat" to the Communist Party, having previously several times warned that the struggle against it "remains grave and complex."

Taken as face value - corruption, requiring action by the President.

This looks a bit caricatural & emotional; I would personally be favoring the "corruption" explanation. In such a case, it would mean that the actions undertaken by Xi would be required. As those high officials would have been close allies of Xi, the corruption phenomenon would be something requiring action, but those wouldn't be given "death sentence". The idea would be that their removal is required, without going into "those are personal enemies of Xi".

I read they are getting rid of high ranking military officials with close family abroad. I think they are worried about high ranking personnel being in a position where they can be blackmailed, even indirectly.

If you think about it, what happened in Syria and Venezuela would give Xi cause for concern.

It’s time like this that I look to history for an explanation, the self-serving have been in charge for long, and it is well known that they have few plans that they use over and over again expecting a different outcome. Look to Napoleon Bonaparte, he was exiled, pardoned and exiled again. Then you have King Leopold II, his brutal exploitation of the Congo was unfounded. And before that is the Pharaoh Akhenaten who was erased from history for his radical shifts. Hughes and Tesla did similarly.

They retract either to recluse or to do something really evil, we see similarities in our governments to this happening today. Hell, we have this trump-et that sounds off in all directions at once, nothing like telegraphing your punches.

Xi, even if he may not openly agree, none of them will openly, he is weaved into this reality too. The direction of this reality is called from one, it is fully understood that they have a higher authority. Even though I expect that Xi has his greater plan working here, you know plans in plans based on wishful thinking have a really bad track record here in this reality.
