Gunmen have reportedly attacked the Ivory Coast beach resort of Grand-Bassam, which is popular with Westerners. Reports say there are casualties.
Two gunmen opened fire on a beach, injuring several people, a local tourist guide told France24. According to Reuters, there were four gunmen involved in the attack.
The assailants, who were "heavily armed and wearing balaclavas, fired at guests at the L'Etoile du Sud (Southern Star), a large hotel which was full of expats in the current heatwave," a witness told AFP.
At least 12 people, including four Europeans, have been killed in the assault, a police source told Reuters.
"For the moment, we have a total of 12 dead, including four Europeans ... We don't know yet if there are others. We are doing clean-up operations right now," said the source.
Earlier, another witness told Reuters that he saw at least seven corpses.
“I saw seven dead that I filmed. There were four attackers. I was swimming when it started and I ran away,” said the witness, who managed to shoot a video at the site.
A video reportedly shot at the scene and posted on Facebook shows people fleeing from the beach through the territory of one of the hotels.
Graphic images of people covered in blood and lying on a beach have been posted on social media.
The total number of casualties is still unclear.
The attackers were reportedly armed with machine guns and had a significant number of grenades, according to photos witnesses posted on Twitter.
Grand-Bassam is located in the south-east of Ivory Coast, lying 40km from the main city of Abidjan. In 2012 it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. The resort is popular with Westerners, according to AFP.

Gunmen attack at a hotel in the Ivory Coast on Sunday was orchestrated by the Islamist organization al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), the terrorist organization that claimed the responsibility for the attack which resulted in 11 killings and several injuries.
The West African hotel suffered for the third time since November by similar incidents at hotels all of which included killings. Mali's Radisson hotel was attacked by al-Qaeda affiliated militants who left 20 tourists and civilians dead. The group's main target is allies of France as it pledged to carry on attacks and didn't stop at an assault in Burkina Farso in February.
"In a message posted on its Telegram channels on March 13, 2016, the group reported that three `heroes' from its group were able to storm the resort," according to the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors online communications by militant groups.
According to different sources, AQIM killed at least 14 civilians, 6 militants and two soldiers in the recent attack.
