Paris prosecutor opens inquiry into whether Epstein committed crimes in France
August 23, 2019 - PARIS - The chief prosecutor in Paris has opened a preliminary inquiry to determine whether late U.S. financier Jeffrey Epstein committed any sex crimes on French territory or against any underage French victims, prosecutor Remy Heitz’s office said in a statement on Friday.
Epstein was arrested on July 6 in New Jersey after his private jet landed on a flight from Paris, where he had a residence on Avenue Foch, one of the French Capital's most exclusive addresses in the 16th District near the Arc de Triomphe.
He pleaded not guilty to U.S. charges of sex trafficking involving dozens of underage girls as young as 14.
Epstein died on Aug. 10 in his jail cell in Manhattan at the age of 66. An autopsy report concluded he had hanged himself.
Epstein’s death at the federal jail triggered multiple investigations. It prompted U.S. Attorney General William Barr to criticize “serious irregularities” at the facility, and to remove the acting chief of the federal Bureau of Prisons.
Barr has said that the criminal investigation into any possible co-conspirators of Epstein would continue.
Earlier this month, French gender equality minister Marlene Schiappa had called on authorities to open an investigation.

Aug. 23, 2019 - PARIS - Prosecutors in France said on Friday that they had opened a preliminary investigation into the scandal surrounding the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein in connection with possible offenses such as rape, the sexual assault of minors and criminal conspiracy.
Rémy Heitz, the Paris prosecutor, announced the investigation after “exchanges” with the United States authorities, he said.
Mr. Heitz did not reveal whether his office had received any specific accusations against Mr. Epstein, but said in a statement that the investigation would aim to “uncover potential offenses” committed against any French citizens in France and abroad.
He said the inquiry was not targeting specific individuals, but would look into whether there had been French perpetrators.
One of the major figures linked to Mr. Epstein is Jean-Luc Brunel, a former French modeling agent, who has been accused by some of the Mr. Epstein’s victims of procuring young girls for him and other abuse. (In 2015, Mr. Brunel strongly denied involvement, “directly or indirectly,” in Mr. Epstein’s crimes.)

August 23, 2019 - The French investigation comes as a charity said it had collected 10 witness statements linking Jeffrey Epstein to sex crimes. The late paedophile had a luxury apartment in Paris.
French prosecutors have opened an investigation into suspected cases of rape of minors and other charges by the late convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, they announced on Friday.
"The investigations ... will focus on potential crimes committed against French victims on national territory as well as abroad, and on suspects who are French citizens," Paris Prosecutor Remy Heitz said in a statement.
Epstein was known to entertain guests at a luxury apartment on Avenue Foch near the Champs-Elysees. He was arrested in New Jersey on July 6 after his private plane landed on a flight from Paris.
One of Epstein's many influential associates was the French modeling tycoon Jean-Luc Brunel, who was accused in US court documents of procuring young girls for Epstein, as well as of rape. He has denied the accusations.
A French charity said this week they had collected 10 witness statements from either victims of Epstein's sexual abuse or someone who witnessed it.
Innocence en Danger (Innocence in Danger), which defends the rights of minors against violence and sexual abuse, said the alleged violations took place on French territory and may have involved French citizens.

Mr. Epstein also owned an apartment in an upscale northwestern neighborhood of Paris near the Arc de Triomphe. He killed himself in a Manhattan jail cell this month after being accused of sexually abusing and trafficking dozens of girls over many years.
It was not immediately clear how long the Epstein investigation would last. Under French law, prosecutors can open preliminary investigations but must hand over to specialized magistrates many of the most serious cases involving crimes such as murder and rape. The magistrates, who have broad investigative powers, can place defendants under formal investigation.
But not all preliminary investigations reach that stage, and prosecutors can drop cases if they do not uncover firm evidence of wrongdoing.
Two French ministers — Marlène Schiappa, the junior minister for gender equality; and Adrien Taquet, the junior minister for child protection — said in a statement this month that Mr. Epstein’s death had left “many unanswered questions” and that it was “fundamental” that a French investigation be opened.
The ministers later clarified that they did not have knowledge of incriminating evidence against Mr. Epstein, but were merely seeking a “clarification.”
