John Perkins

From running a search of the Forum I saw a few references to John Perkins, author of Confessions of an Economic Hit Man. There was mention that he could be a "tar baby", being set up to get "knocked down", etc. Last fall I saw a documentary on one of his current projects and have been thinking about just exactly where is he at, and that I would need to read some of his other books. However, being in a "third world" area, I will have to wait till I can hit a big-city bookstore and search availability.
I am very curious to know if other SOTTers/Forumites are aware of what he's now involved with, and what they might think/conclude. He seems to be manifesting a very interesting "personal transformation". I personally come away with some mixed feelings, and some of it is hard to pin down, just intuitive questioning/doubting that he is truly who he appears to be. I sense an egotism and a kind of super "cool dude" persona. Not quite enough humility IMHO.
In brief, Perkins has been, for some years now, involved with South American rainforest shamans, and tribal communities. He claims to have helped raise $millions for indigenous causes, and several tribes in particular. He promotes the idea that native peoples hold the keys to getting us out of the mess and creating a life-honoring and peaceful future. He personally has worked with shamanic/entheogenic medicinal plants. I have no problem with any of this.
His books include: Shapeshifting - Techniques for Personal and Global Transformation [He claims to have been studying with shamans since 1968, so I'm wondering if he was doing so while also an "economic hit man", and if so, why? Maybe he explains. Also one reviewer said he became turned off when, halfway through the book, he started talking about Jesus (?).], Spirit of the Shuar - Wisdom From the Last Unconquered People of the Amazon, The World Is As You Dream It - Shamanic Teachings from the Amazon and Andes among others. His latest book is Secret History of the American Empire. He also claims to have "changed his life" due to reading a book called The Good Remembering by Llyn Roberts. His focus and project name is:
'WAKING OUR WORLD" Movement:
Inspire Earth-Honoring Changes in Consciousness
Utilize Indigenous Wisdom to Effect Social and Environmental Change
Conserve Forests and Preserve Traditional Cultures and Values
Encourage Sustainable Ways of Living
The 'Waking Our World' programs are low priced. However he also has 'Shapeshifting' workshops at places like Omega Institute (not cheap). His websites are: www.dreamchange.org and www.johnperkins.org

Perkins openly admits he was paid handsomely for both his work as "hit man" and afterward, to "shut up". He made his nut and has got himself 'covered' probably nicely for the rest of his life, even if he never wrote a book.

But the reason I'm posting is that I heard an interview with him last Thursday on KPFA/Pacifica on the Visionary Activism Show with Caroline Casey. It can be found archived here: http://kpfa.org/archives/index.php?arch=21670
The program blurb is:
"Caroline is aptly joined by bestselling author John Perkins, whose latest book,The Secret History of the American Empire. a crucial exploration of how we got here, a world where we have abdicated leadership to sociopathic dementors... Like the profound movie "Lives of Others," Perkins is not only a story-teller, but is an incarnational embodied story himself, of how the sociopathic heart can bloom once again with conscious kinship. Once an agent of the problem, now in service to the solution, Perkins' story invites us all to acknowledge and withdraw our complicity from tyranny, that we may be liberated (hence liberating) agents of visionary activism at this time of dire beauty."
"...the sociopathic heart can bloom..." - that's an interesting statement. In the interview he talks about how corporate execs are just 'scared' to rock boats, lose their jobs, that they care about their kids and grandkids, etc. He also says "people have to take to the streets", etc., kind of like Cindy Sheehan says. Oh well. I wonder if he could be a candidate for gifting a "Political Ponerology" book.....
Maybe he's totally what he appears to be. Any thoughts?

Moderators: feel free to move to "Shamanism" or other category deemed more appropriate.

I have the same mixed feelings about the man but can't really come up with anything negative to say about him. He claims 9/11 was the event causing his transformation but I don't think he has come right out and said it was an inside job. I find this like a form of gatekeeping, kind of Naomi Klein and Noam Chomskyish. Another factor would be instantly alienating many people and fewer book sales?

Greg Palast wrote a blurb about him here with many reader comments

Here is an interesting John Perkins quote...
"When the National Security Agency recruited me, they put me through a day of lie detector tests. They found out all my weaknesses and immediately seduced me. They used the strongest drugs in our culture, sex, power and money, to win me over."

Overall it can't be a bad thing so many people are reading and listening to his work perhaps leading them to research other related information. He is probably just a product of his environment which can be taken two ways, either he has turned a new leaf and really wants a better world at all costs or is still working for the agency leaking bits of disinfo to distract and disillusion. Maybe even a third result in that he wants change but is still bound and gagged with non-disclosure contracts?

Still worth some time if you are interested in how the World Bank/IMF and big corporations operate under the radar but I find most of his material obvious at this point in my own journey of understanding.

Well, it is certainly true that a decent person raised in a deviant society can be "ponerized." I also agree with the Cs that some people that may seem sociopathic could be just souls in struggle.

It's important to distinguish between a soul in struggle and a real psychopath, though.

I'm all for sending him a copy of Ponerology.

i can't speak to perkins' other material, but i read confessions about a year after it came out, and it was one of the initial wake-up calls to me about the IMF and the world bank. it certainly did lead me to other areas of research, which eventually led me here. i can say personally, the book was a seemingly positive influence (meaning it led me to seek more knowledge) at that point in time...

also definitely true, and interesting as well to see his transition in terms of ponerology at this point in the journey.

i didn't have an understanding of psycopathy, ponerology or cointelpro when i read confessions, at the time i saw him as a sleazy dude who had wised up after committing all these financial atrocities and was doing what he could to make penance, in a way... i suppose it depends on "how far" one takes his material after it is digested. is it enough for a body of work to contain enough truth so that it leads people to seek more information from other sources?

John Perkins, isn't that the same guy who talked about Economic Terrorism in the latest documentary "Zetigeist Addendum"?
He seemed rather genuine, but also took a new age turn towards the end of his interview, stating that all we just need to recognize is our connection to nature and each other so to speak. Can't remember his exact words.
However, considering where he came from, he should somehow understand that there are people (aka psychopaths) who couldn't care less about the revelations he had during his "transformation". Well the "should" part is more wishful thinking on my part.

.

Maybe that will give him more a jump start into the "root" of the problem. His reaction to it may also reveal his true colors.

Hi all,

Read a few books by Perkins, the "confessions" and "Psychonavigation: Techniques for travel beyond time".

I also have a bit a funny feeling about him. In "Confessions" he describes how he was bought, groomed and put to work as an economic hitman. But this all comes across as "detached", when in fact what he is telling is horrific. He must have destroyed hundreds of thousand of livelihoods. Not sure if he isn't a psychopath that has "opted out", who has found a way of living his way of life on a more positive note - but as Laura mentioned, he may be genuine, a soul struggling. I think for me it is impossible to decide on what I know about him.

The other book is quite interesting and describes different techniques in "psychonavigation", which really are out-of-body experiences. I have heard about many such shamanic techniques all over the world, but I struggle to bring these two books under the same guy - they are really quite far opposed from each other.

And his involvement with the amazonian tribes may just be another business venture - making money without the fall-out of mixing with powerful economic people, which ultimately will call in favours ...

So mixed feelings all over the place - maybe time will tell.
