Just curious about "guests"

So every so often I come across a post that says it is posted by "guest". What is this "guest", and how is it different from a registered user?

In most instances, those are people who were removed from the forum due to their behavior and later had their accounts deleted.

I have the impression that "Guest" englobes also people who were regular and correct member of the forum at some point in time but didn't post for a very long time, resulting in their account to be deleted to free some space in the server or something like that. is this not the case?

Yes, that happens too.

Thanks Laura.
I have asked as some Guest's post are quite instructive and completely labelling "him" as bad guy could result to people dismissing some instructive info OSIT.

Now I understand why sometimes have a feeling that "Guest" looks to me like a "Ghost" :D!
Is there any limited time, dead line -of not posting - to become "guest"?

Hi istina,

There is no dead line that I know of. From time to time, the membership list gets pruned. There are members who have signed up and never logged in and there are members who have not logged in for ages. These are the members who might eventually end up as "Guest". :)

It's still probably a good idea to take what a 'guest' writes with an extra grain of salt. There was one particular user who wrote a great many of 'instructive' posts, and when he was found out it really threw some members through a loop. categories of membership : meaning of "user" ? is a worthwhile thread to read through. If I'm not mistaken the category of 'user' is now 'guest'.

Thanks. Sometimes I look down at "Who,s Online" and I noticed that there were always (at least ) maybe 20-30%
more guests than registered users. At "Who is Online" I can find interesting threads to study which I didn,t know were discussed, and sometimes it is fun to watch interaction between members. :)

When you see the number of guests online at the bottom of the forum home page, that is a number that corresponds to the number of people reading the forum who are not logged in, and isn't related to the posts by those named "Guest".

Since we're on the subject (or thereabouts), may I ask about the occasional (1 Hidden) user? What is that about?

Various forum software systems have an account setting for hiding your online status from other members. Here it doesn't seem to be available to regular members, but I guess one or more have had it enabled either by having it set for them or by having the forum permissions to set it themselves.
