Lice

I believe we already have a thread on this topic.

I've had to deal with it for several people a number of times. Final solution: coconut oil or olive oil mixed with a bit of neem oil on the hair for a soak. comb through to get all living critters out. Kill 'em (flush down the toilet, whatever.) Then, shampoo the hair with baby shampoo and MOST IMPORTANT: dry hair with hair dryer on hot, getting all areas of the hair/head heated as hot as you can stand it. This kills the eggs. Do this every day for a week. If any hatch, the oil job gets them off. The heat kills the eggs. After a week, do it every other day. Then every three days, until you are down to your usual shampooing schedule.

The repeated oil treatments prevent damage to the hair and you don't have to use any harsh chemicals.

How about Kerosene ? I don't know how safe it is though to have it on your scalp.

When I used to have lice as a kid, I would have my hair/scalped soaked with kerosene, then part of the scalp wrapped in plastic. You would have to sit for an hour or two before rinsing and it burns, but it does the job. But again, I have no knowledge on how safe it is if body absorbs kerosene.

Have a look at wikipedia for kerosene: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerosene

And specifically :

Toxicity

Ingestion of kerosene is harmful or fatal. Kerosene should never be used to get rid of hair lice as it can cause burns and serious illness. A kerosene shampoo can even be fatal if fumes are inhaled.[24][25]

I would never put that stuff on my head.

I was appalled to see my mother-in-law put kerosene (aka jet fuel!) on the head of her housemaid, wrapped her head in a clear plastic bag and made her sit in the sun for a looooong time - till she was loudly complaining how her head burned! I felt the woman was being tortured & stated so, insisting she be allowed to wash it out immediately.

Laura's suggestion sounds much less toxic.

Oh, thankyou for the advice. I will try that process. I am searching for neem oil in my town, I've never bought such. It sounds healthy compared to all the chemical treatments recommended by mainstream medicine.

Yeah, Kerosene is very toxic for the body!

If you can't find neem oil, I think it will still work. Or you can use savon noir or put some oregano oil in or something like that. Just use a regular comb first (while the oil is in) and then the fine toothed comb.

One thing I learned years ago when working in the welfare office: people who wash their hair frequently and use a blow dryer NEVER get lice. It's not so much the shampooing, though that does wash out any live ones if done thoroughly, it's the heat that kills the eggs.

I can tell you that the heat and oil treatment works REALLY well and is the most chemical-free solution I've used. A few years ago, I came back from a trip with lots of lice after seeing my little cousins, and Laura told me to do what she described above. It worked better than anything else in the past. You will see. But don't skip the hair dryer step! That is really important!

Good luck!

There is one more non toxic alternative - you can shave your head if you are male Smiley
if you are female too...very,very liberating IMO everybody should try it at least once in their life gets rid of vanity programs :P :-[

Good point, of course, by all means ! By no way I mean to be disrespectful to women in that sense.

Dear women, free yourself from "how should you look" oppression and look as you wish. Be yourself, it is pretty. All women look pretty in their own unique way no matter what !

Sorry for the delay, here go the replies:

Sure, but I'll fix it in the other ways and let the shaving as the last option if nothing works

Thanks, it's useful to know that, I mean the heat thing. Regarding neem oil, I just found that there are some available in a website that is a local version of ebay(with another name), and it's cheap.

In my case, I am male in the current incarnation, but we are entering winter here, if one day I want to shave my head, I prefere to do it in summer :guru:

And very painful. I must have been 5 or 6 when I got the lice in kindergarten and my mother used kerosene to get rid of it. I still remember excruciating pain and burning of the scalp :(
