For ham radio stuff, as far a I know there's still a lot more software for windows than for mac,

That's good to know. I'm still a newbie, so there is a ton of stuff I don't know.
It is interesting to note how attractive the Mac pro is to serious users, despite its 'limitations.'
I am an ordinary user, but am unaccountably drawn to it. Somehow, it 'feels' right.
But technical choices are a balancing act -- all inputs help.

I have used Linux on and off since SuSE 5.1 days, and I have heard people say that it's all sooo plug and play now with every new distro. And still, each time I have soon found myself hacking away on the command line or in vi for pretty basic stuff

I guess there must be unknown levels of "pretty basic stuff".

I need the command line about every 10 years.
