Mainstream media Activism

It boggles my mind to view how activism deteriorated to a buffoonery. Until 5 to 6 yrs back, activism means some courageous people went out of their way and protested infront of the power. Soon that was coopted and nullified. then MSNBC's kieth olbermann and the latest are the john stewart and colbert. who ever the script writers of these showmen are, they did a beautiful job . Recently, John stewart's show was doing a good job going behind FOX, glen beck gang. Obviously some body up there took note of it for sure, things started changing.

couple of days back john stewart interviewed tony blair . though he didn't agree with blair on many issues including Iran war, but was very very soft in his usual criticism and even showed his latest crime book and requested people to buy his book. This is all understandable. why does a tony blair go to his show after some many egg and tomato missile attacks.

Now the latest is , they are conducting the rallies in washington like glen beck. The script of it rally so ridiculous and convoluted that they are scapegoating or ridiculing the entire thing ( exposing the the lies and hypocracy of the PTB) they are cashing on in the process the ridiculing the truth itself.

"restore honor." Jon Stewart hopes to "restore sanity" when he gets to the capital next month.
The Comedy Central host announced Thursday night that he will hold a rally at the National Mall on Oct. 30, capping a week of "Daily Show" broadcasts from Washington

Stewart says he's not looking for the seasoned rallygoer who may flock to hyperpolitical gatherings carrying a homemade Obama-is-Hitler — or Bush-is-Hitler — sign. Instead, Stewart described the event as a "million moderate march" and a "clarion call for rationality" — in other words, an antidote to the overheated protests on the left and right.

"You may be asking yourself, right now, sitting at home, but am I the right type of person to go to this rally," said Stewart. "The fact that you would even stop to ask yourself that question, as opposed to just, let's say, jumping up, grabbing the nearest stack of holy books, strapping on a diaper and just pointing your car toward D.C. — that means I think you might just be right for it."

Stewart also promised to have premade signs for all the busy, non-conspiracy-minded attendees who don't have time to create their own. One possibility: "9/11 Was An Outside Job." And Stewart closed the segment with another banner that he feels captures the rally's theme: "Take It Down A Notch For America." (You can watch Stewart's announcement below.)

But what's one major Washington rally without a counter-rally? Beck had Al Sharpton and other civil rights leaders holding their own event as he descended upon the capital. Stewart has his own (pretend)

"Shame on you Jon Stewart," Colbert said later on his own show. "America cannot afford a rally to restore sanity in the middle of a recession. Did you even consider how many panic-related jobs that might cost us in the fear-industrial complex?"

Colbert, in an attempt to fight Stewart's "creeping reasonableness" and "restore truthiness," announced a competing event on October 30: the "March to Keep Fear Alive." You can watch Colbert's announcement below.

Interestingly the internet advertisements once filled with porn websites and dating websites are filled up with the tea party madams. surprisingly one can't make a difference until they read the text.

strange times indeed.

I don't mean to suggest this article, just to comment

The proposal of the Stewart/Colbert rally is an interesting phenomena. It should be noted wherever it is mentioned that it was not initially their idea; it was an Internet meme in response to Glenn Beck's rally that they decided to take the public up on and actually bring into reality.

These shows, or the show they originally sprang from, did play a certain role in my awakening process. Although they do play a role in diffusing the tension of current events by making jokes of sometimes the most serious subjects, I would not count out the effect they still sometimes have on young people in helping them begin to pierce through the veil at times. I do agree that Jon Stewart has lost a great deal of his edge and very often fits into the mold of kissing the asses of the PTB in order to continue to get them to come on his show. With Stephen Colbert it is a little harder to tell since he is so constantly in triple reverse irony character mode, but keeping in mind what he did at the White House Correspondents Dinner four years ago, he clearly has the potential to be fearless even while leading a rally nominally themed with promoting fear.

There is a fair chance I will end up in attendance at this really, at least to see the spectacle but hopefully do a little more in the way of opening eyes and changing minds. I was disappointed to see "9/11 Was An Outside Job" but of course it may not be completely semantically inaccurate. I can think of some footnote stickers to be added to that sign that might explain things a bit further. At least it wasn't something completely idiotic like "9/11 was perpetrated solely by 19 Muslim hijackers living in caves with no help from anyone else". I would bet there are people on the Daily Show's writing staff who have serious doubts about the official account, and I would bet there will be plenty of people at the rally who have doubts about that and more. There's no reason to let the PTB and their reluctant jesters take complete control of what started out as a response from the public to the complete ridiculousness of Glenn Beck's antics. Glenn Beck is appealing to genuine concern about the state of affairs and distorting the heck out of it. At least this crowd is likely to be much more informed on the whole, and wary of such distortions as a matter of course.
