Materialistic project

I've been fighting with myself for about a week now on one of my materialistic projects. Is it wrong to want to finish something like this? I ask because I've noticed i have a bad habit of starting things and then never completing them. For the most part the project requires alot of hard work and little money. While it has been plaguing one half of my mind to get it done the other half says its a materialistic project and not worth my time. This has been a re-occurring thing in my life of starting things and never completing them. I'm torn between actually finishing it or letting it go. Any thoughts on this? My mind is clouded when this comes up.

Hi shadowsaround,

Not sure if you have seen this or if it will help, but have a look at this link. I'll see if I can find some more. :)

Hi shadowsaround

I can relate to what you mention here, maybe not in the same way, but as in never finishing projects as they seemed pointless or too diffuse after having exhausted the primary enthusiasm and seeing it would basically only serve a STS matter.

It sounds as if you could be talking two issues here;

One could be procrastination as thruth seeker links to or just not having a clear aim enmeshed with the materialistic problem; Untill I met Gurdjieffs writings I despised everything materialisticly focused, but when I saw the point of becoming a provider (Obyvatel) I changed my mind; although dealing with money and stuff can become a prison it is also a means to take responsability for yourself and others. In the last chapter called the 'The material question' in 'Meetings with remarkable men' G. describes how he himself made alot of experience and psychological experiments with his skills on the marketplace. He developed instincts to make money to provide for his thruth expeditions and schools. He had an excellent upbringing, skill-set and formation of questions and aim before he went into money and stuff accumulating business, the materialistic world which premises he despised, he entered and sacrificed alot to bring the message we can enjoy today.

Meetings with remarkable men said:
As I then expected to meet many obstacles in my effort to introduce into life the psychological ideas upon which this establishment, extraordinary for the present day, would be based, I felt it necessary to be independent, at least in the material sense; the more so, since experience had already shown me that wealthy people never become seriously enough interested in these questions to support a work of this kind, and that others, even with great interest and desire, cannot do much in this respect, as for such an enterprise a great deal of money is needed.

That is why, if I wished to actualize in full what I had planned, it was necessary, before thinking of carrying out the psychological tasks, first of all to resolve this aspect of the problem. Therefore, with the aim of creating sufficient capital for this purpose within a set period, I began to devote much more time than before to earning money.

I don't know if you mean materialistic as in just amassing stuff for the sake of stuff or more in the line of making money which we all need to do. I myself am at a loss trying to develop some way of providing for myself, trying to align my aim and daily work in developing or joining a project to refresh and wrestle all my diffuse skills back into action.

Not knowing your project, but could there be a point in finishing for the sake of confidence and experience in getting things done?

Hi shadowsaround,

Maybe you can ask yourself, what makes you start in the first place....

Then you can ask yourself, what is witholding you back from completing it?

That is pretty much why i want to get this current project done. This will be the second time I have attempted something of this nature, the first time failing pretty bad. I know I am not supposed to judge myself but sometime's when i do that it tends to shift my thinking and allows me to be more motivated to not repeat that mistake. The project could serve various purposes I suppose as well as possible future monetary resale value. As far what the project is I'd rather not say as it does embarrass me to be doing it after everything I have learned so far in the books I have read along with the C's transcripts and articles.

I started this because I have always wanted to do this and actually complete it. I have been witholding back from it as i feel guilty i am devoting so much spare time to this instead of reading as i feel i should. That and lack of research of the project has held me back due to my own ignorance for a small part.

You say that "This has been a re-occurring thing in my life...."

You may want to take a look at the Narcissism Big 5 books, although that would probably keep you from your project. :D However, if you could work your time right and split your time up between them, this should work.

It's said in these books that people who cannot finish something have been told since they were a child that they were worthless, that they will never amount to anything and so on. So to fulfill this "prophesy" they continually sabotage themselves by never finishing anything, thus proving that they are worthless. There are other reasons, too, but this is the first thing that jumped to my mind.

Getting rid of these programs and cleaning our machines is of high priority. Hopefully you are doing EE which will help in these endeavors.
