En el domicilio donde el imputado fue capturado se hallaron los lentes y la peluca que se presume usó durante la agresión, puesto que al momento de su detención luce rapado.
A raíz del ataque fueron revisadas las imágenes de las cámaras de vigilancia de la zona de la agresión para trazar, a partir de ahí, el recorrido previo que siguió el atacante hasta el diplomático.
Las cámaras revelaron que Zia Zafar estuvo previamente en una cafetería Starbucks. En las imágenes de las cámaras del establecimiento se aprecia que el hombre usaba en ese momento la peluca y los lentes oscuros, mismos que portaba cuando atacó a la víctima, identificada por el diario británico The Guardian como Christopher Nolan Ashcraft.
La tarjeta de crédito que utilizó para pagar un café permitió a las autoridades ubicar el domicilio del titular y detener al presunto atacante.
Las investigaciones señalan que el último ingreso legal de Zia Zafar a México fue el 25 de noviembre de 2016, en el vuelo 5939 de la aerolínea American Eagle proveniente de Phoenix, Arizona, que llegó a la ciudad de Guadalajara a las 13:38 horas.
Las imágenes del aeropuerto de la capital jalisciense muestran a Zafar ingresando por el filtro 19 completamente rapado y vistiendo una chamarra deportiva de color blanco y negro.
El estadounidense se mantiene observando en el momento en el que una persona del área de migración revisa sus documentos.
Este domingo por la tarde, en un comunicado de prensa conjunto, la Procuraduría General de la República (PGR) y la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE) informaron que el detenido será expulsado y repatriado a Estados Unidos, para que sean las autoridades de ese país quienes definan su situación jurídica.
“En virtud de las acciones coordinadas entre la Fiscalía General del Estado de Jalisco y las autoridades federales mexicanas competentes, en estrecha colaboración con el Buró Federal de Investigación (FBI), la Embajada de los Estados Unidos de América en México y el Consulado General de ese país en Guadalajara, se logró la localización y aseguramiento de un individuo de nacionalidad estadounidense, presuntamente involucrado en este incidente, mismo que será expulsado y repatriado a los Estados Unidos de América donde se determinará su situación jurídica”, destacó.
El documento informa que ambas dependencias han estado en contacto con familiares de la víctima y se han mantenido atentas del estado de salud de Nolan Ashcraft, quien actualmente es reportado estable.
La PGR y la SRE indicaron que se realizaron acciones coordinadas con la Fiscalía General del Estado de Jalisco y con el Buró Federal de Investigación (FBI, por sus siglas en inglés) para esclarecer los hechos.
“Desde que ocurrió este lamentable incidente, ambas dependencias han dado puntual seguimiento y atención al mismo, en coordinación con autoridades locales y federales, así como mantenido una permanente comunicación con los representantes diplomáticos y consulares de los Estados Unidos de América”, indicaron.
Autoridades mexicanas y estadounidenses continuarán realizando las investigaciones que lleven al esclarecimiento del móvil del ataque.
Según la investigación, Zia Zafar nació el 1 de enero de 1985 y se confirmó que recientemente se volvió simpatizante del islamismo.
El 6 de enero, a las 18:20 horas, las cámaras de vigilancia captaron a un hombre de cabello negro con gafas oscuras, quien vestía camisola y pantalones azules o morados, esperando en el estacionamiento de una torre ubicada sobre Avenida Vallarta, en la colonia Arcos Vallarta, en Guadalajara, y al ver un Honda Fit negro, donde viajaba la víctima, se le ve aproximarse para dispara en una sola ocasión y después huir corriendo del lugar.
Nolan Ashcraft recibió un impacto en el pecho de un arma de calibre 380; debido a que el disparo fue certero, con base en eso las autoridades presumen que Zafar cuenta con adiestramiento en el manejo de armas.
El FBI de inmediato tomó parte de las investigaciones y ofreció una recompensa de 20 mil dólares para quien entregara información relacionada con el caso.
La noche del sábado la Embajada de Estados Unidos emitió una alerta de seguridad, en la que solicitaba a sus ciudadanos residentes en Guadalajara evitar salir a menos que fuera necesario, trasladarse sólo de su casa al trabajo y que cambien sus rutas diarias constantemente.
“Mientras continúe la investigación sobre el tiroteo en contra de un empleado del consulado, se hace un exhorto a los ciudadanos estadounidenses en la zona de Guadalajara a restringir sus salidas a lo estrictamente esencial y limitarlos a sus hogares o lugares de trabajo”, recomendó la embajada.
En esa misma alerta de viaje al estado de Jalisco, el gobierno estadounidense pidió evitar traslados innecesarios a las zonas fronterizas de esa entidad con Michoacán y Zacatecas, por la “continua inestabilidad”.
La mañana de este domingo, la Fiscalía General de Jalisco informó a través de su cuenta de Twitter que el detenido fue puesto a disposición de la Procuraduría General de la República.
“Fuerzas Especiales de la #FGE, lograron la detención del agresor del agente consular, el detenido ha sido puesto a disposición de la @PGR_mx”, informó a las 9:42 horas.
Las autoridades informaron que en el momento de su detención Zia Zafar vestía una playera gris y se le notaba confundido.
El fiscal general de Jalisco, Eduardo Almaguer Ramírez, señaló el pasado sábado que el agente consular estadounidense se dedicaba a entrevistar a las personas que solicitan visas.
Desde Washington, el secretario de Estado estadounidense, John Kerry, agradeció al gobierno mexicano por la rápida detención del agresor de Nolan Ashcraft.
