We wish everyone a healthy and rewarding New Year.
As for Christmas, we haven't felt much like celebrating anything for awhile now. So, we are not really "celebrating" Christmas. No gifts this year - it just seems somehow "off" to be giving gifts in commemoration of a myth and when so many people on the planet are suffering and doing without.
We are remembering that it is the Winter Solstice and the "return of the lengthening of days", so we put a live tree in a big pot in our salon with one string of lights on it, a butterfly on top and a few plastic baubles. Far cry from the elaborate trees of the past. We'll plant the tree in the yard when Spring comes. We DID do our usual exterior decorations for the benefit of neighbors.
We aren't having our usual turkey and dressing either. We are having a ham and sweet potatoes instead and keeping the dinner very low key. I didn't go all out on baking mountains of goodies this year either. It just seemed "off" to do that. We have cookies, date bread and one kind of pie for dessert.
So, basically, we have scaled things back severely and are not putting a lot of energy into a big "feast-celebration" that is not in keeping with the realities of our world. The benefits seem to be that we stick closer to our diet, conserve energy, save money. That's not a bad thing I guess.
