Does it help anything if you are behind a router?

The answer is "maybe". It depends on the router and how it is configured but it provides Yet Another Layer for an intruder to figure out. Since it is easier for a hacker to just move on to someone else, it might help to deter all but the most determined.

Just don't use wireless.
