Monsanto, Glyphosate

Two weeks ago, state-owned ChemChina finalized its $44 billion purchase of the Swiss pesticides and seeds giant, Syngenta. It was China's biggest foreign takeover of all time.

Why is China buying the world's seeds?
http://money.cnn.com/2017/07/13/news/china-food-seeds-agriculture/

July 13, 2017 - On Tuesday, Dow Chemical (DOW) announced that an agriculture fund backed by the Chinese government would pay $1.1 billion for its Brazilian corn seed and research business.

Chinese firms have spent $91 billion over the past decade purchasing nearly 300 foreign companies involved in agriculture, chemicals and food, according to Dealogic.

Why the massive spending spree?

Food security - Experts say the purchases are part of China's plan to improve its ability to supply food to its population of nearly 1.4 billion. As Chinese living standards improve and citizens demand more meat products, the country needs a growing supply of animal feed.

But China is contending with major challenges: An aging agricultural workforce, pollution, climate change and high levels of soil depletion, according to Rob Bailey, an expert in food security at policy institute Chatham House.

The country's farms also suffer from low yields due to outdated farming practices, said Brett Stuart, CEO and co-founder of Global AgriTrends.

The latest seed purchases show China wants to lock down the scientific know-how needed to improve its domestic crop yields, said Stuart.

"They're trying to acquire knowledge," he said. "I think these moves just show that they are trying to do as much as they can for food self-sufficiency ... There's not enough traded food in the world to save them were they to fail."

All countries try to protect against food shortages.

But the issue is particularly sensitive in China, which suffered severe food shortages during Mao Zedong's "Great Leap Forward," which began in the late 1950s.

Historians say that tens of millions of people starved to death during the famine, which remains a taboo subject in China.

National interest - Chinese purchases are in the national interest, but there are concerns over how nations -- and companies -- could respond to a modern food crisis.

"Countries are going to be increasingly concerned about how they can ensure they can continue to access food supplies in the event of a major harvest shortfall," warned Bailey.

Many of the Chinese firms acquiring food-based businesses are backed by the government. In the event of a food shortage, there's a risk that, instead of honoring business contracts, they'd instead "focus on getting food back to the home market," said Bailey.

National security concerns were raised in 2013 when China's Shuanghui International bought U.S. pork producer Smithfield Foods, but pork production was not dramatically altered and U.S. supplies were not diverted back to China, said Stuart.

"As China continues to acquire more and more agriculture assets outside of China, then that may become more of a concern," said Stuart.

China isn't the only country acting to strengthen its agriculture prowess. Countries like Saudi Arabia and Japan have also been buying into businesses in the global food supply chain, but their actions are not as high-profile as China's, said Bailey.

I think it means that Monsanto intents to destroy the heirloom seed industry. Once they buy all of the players, there is literally nothing to stop them from shutting down all distribution of heirloom seeds. At that point they will literally have a legal lock on the seed industry and be able to quite literally force people to purchase GMO seeds.

That's what I worry about too. Maybe not so much forcing everyone to purchase GMO, but so they make a money no matter where people buy their seeds.

It appears they want a total monopoly - where they are the source of everything people eat. Then they can set prices wherever they please, or they get a cut on every single trade.

I found this article that is rather worriedsome? many people still thinks that Morena may be the answer to Mexico, I do not think so and, with this kind of "steps" increase my suspicious that something is more obscure from what is available to see ... when I read about the Internal Security Law Is Mexico Heading Towards a Military Dictatorship? I did thought that it would be a form to stop Morena one way or another, but I read this article yesterday and ... leave me with more wonders ...

The day that Monsanto infiltrated Morena
By Víctor M. Toledo, La Jornada , December 19, 2017

The case of Odebrecht, the Brazilian corporation that bribed innumerable Latin American governments, including that of Mexico, is just one more of the many that exist in the world through which capital infiltrates, subdues and controls the State.

We live in the era not only of the political spies but of the agents that the gigantic corporations hire to serve their interests, placing them in key government positions. It is what has been called the stateless global governance (J. Ziegler, The New Masters of the World , 2013).

Two illustrative examples are those of the pharmaceutical companies and the agri-food companies. The former have infiltrated ministries of health, scientific journals of medicine and, of course, the World Health Organization (WHO). The latter place agents in key positions in the ministries of agriculture and in the global network of agricultural research centers and, of course, in FAO. This is the case of the five sisters who dominate the planet's agrifood monopoly: Monsanto, Bayer, Syngenta, Pioneer and Dow Agroscience.

The past 14 December will go down in history as one of the days of greatest glory for the corporations, because they achieved a spectacular triumph: they managed to place their main Latin American agent as future Secretary of Agriculture of a left government in Mexico
. This is the agronomist Víctor Manuel Villalobos, who has made a spectacular career for 20 years in favor of corporate interests, the model of agriculture promoted by the United States, the transfer of huge amounts of funds from the Sagarpa to international organizations and permanent sabotage to any initiative that attempts against agribusiness. His meteoric trajectory as an agent of agrifood and biotechnology corporations and a persistent opponent of peasant, indigenous and environmental demands is internationally known.[/b] --- Morena, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador its candidate for president presented his

Started as a biotechnologist at the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the IPN (1995-97), where he gave rise to one of the two main centers of studies on genetically modified foods, he jumped unexpectedly to the undersecretary of Semarnap (1997-99) imposed by the then president E. Zedillo to the one that was titular of that dependancy. From there he managed with V. Fox to locate himself as undersecretary and then coordinator of international affairs for Sagarpa (2002-2009). It was in this last position where he became explicitly an agent of corporate interests on a national and international scale.

In Mexico, he was the promoter of the first version of the Biosafety Law (known as the Monsanto law ) that sought to facilitate the biotechnology companies obtaining the permission to sow transgenic corn, promoted the initiative of the Law of Plant Genetic Resources, aimed at facilitating the biopiracy of seeds, and defended at all costs the Law of Agrofuels. However, its greatest successes were on an international scale because it managed to deactivate international agreements at the meetings of the Cartagena Protocol in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (2004) and Curitiba, Brazil (2006). For example, it boycotted the mandatory labeling of genetically modified organisms or voting jointly with the protransgenic countries on behalf of Mexico. His role as scab led him to be appointed since 2010 director general of the Research Institute of Agricultural Sciences (IICA) based in Costa Rica, which is the agricultural arm of the Organization of American States (OAS) and spearhead of agribusiness in Latin America From that position, he has been promoting the 2003-2015 Plan of the Americas for the development of the biotechnology industry in the region, as well as supporting and implementing the North American Biotechnology Initiative (Nabi).

Why was Andrés Manuel López Obrador appointed this sepoy of the transnationals?
How can such a sinister character head a secretariat that seeks the recovery of peasant agriculture, the defense of corn, the rescue of the Mesoamerican agricultural tradition, the multiplication of successful agroecological projects more and more numerous, and a policy for the countryside aimed at achieving food sovereignty? The questions have no answers, but more questions. Everything indicates that this appointment actually comes from a major intervention, from a superior Trojan horse: Alfonso Romo, the controversial and powerful businessman of the Monterrey Group and head of the Pulsar Group also appointed by AMLO as its chief of strategy and coordinator of the Alternative Project de Nación 2018. This turns Morena into a party that possesses a sheepskin with a wolf brain, in which the central decisions are dictated by a connoted member of the Mafia in power, which, logically, possesses a neoliberal vision, technocratic and classist reality of the country ( see interview in Forbes )

A few hours after the inexplicable appointment, indignation and discouragement multiplied among broad sectors of militants and supporters of Morena, from peasant organizations, indigenous cooperatives and students of the Mexican countryside to resistance movements and defense of the territory and environmental organizations and civil society. . In the next few days we will see texts, manifestos and public demands for Morena to rectify this crazy decision, at the risk of losing millions of the so-called green vote (peasant, indigenous and environmental). The situation is worrisome, because the incongruity is not limited to the Ministry of Agriculture. The same has happened with the Semarat and the SEP, whose appointments do not resist the slightest criticism. Curious that just this happens with the three sectors that today make up the largest bastions of resistance to the neoliberal project that has led to the ruin of Mexico: peasants and indigenous peoples, environmentalists and democratic teachers.

ON CONTACT - The fight for life v. Monsanto/Bayer AG
www.youtube.com/watch?v=1282XZ_8ofw
This week Monsanto/Bayer AG was ordered by a California federal court to pay $80 million to Edwin Hardeman after a jury found its weed killer, Roundup, caused his cancer. The case is just one of thousands of lawsuits filed against the company over plaintiff’s use of the glyphosate-based herbicide. In 2015, the World Health Organization classified glyphosate as probably carcinogenic to humans. The Food and Drug Administration has concluded the herbicide is not likely carcinogenic to humans. In August 2018, a jury in California state court awarded a school’s groundskeeper, Dewayne Johnson, nearly $289 million in damages. The verdict was later reduced to $78 million and is on appeal. In this conversation with Chris Hedges, environmental activist and author, Vandana Shiva, talks about Monsanto/Bayer AG and other big AG players interests in India and her fight to protect life forms, seed varieties and farmers.

Until I read this article I would have never made the connection that frequent golfing could potentially be fatal. Check it out,

There are 34,000 golf courses in the world. They make beautiful pictures. But what keeps the grass of the fairways and greens so uniform and undisturbed by weeds?

Chemical herbicides. One of the herbicide is Roundup, manufactured by Monsanto, the giant corporation owned by Bayer.

It’s now common knowledge that a link has been drawn between Roundup and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. “The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer…decided in 2015 that glyphosate is ‘probably carcinogenic to humans’.” (Mother Jones, March 14, 2019)

Hello Hi Henry.

You are right. I never thought of it that way. So much for plenty of exercise and fresh air. What about football stadiums, the modern day Colosseums? I think there should be more of them with far more spectators than golfers. And ,as usual, you pay for the privilege.

A new investigation by Mammavation finds that cancer-causing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are manufactured into the absorbent pad and sticky flap of common bandages. This is concerning, because PFAS can then leach directly into the bloodstream.

According to the investigation, bandages from some of the most well-known brands, like Band-Aid and Curad, contain hazardous amounts of these “forever chemicals.” The testing revealed the presence of fluorine in more than two dozen bandages, which are widely available in medicine cabinets across the nation.

PFAS compounds are strong chemicals that can withstand being in the environment for many years because they have links between fluorine and carbon atoms. The compounds are found in many products, most notably nonstick cookware, hamburger wrappers, menstrual pads and water- and stain-repellent goods. Teflon, the ubiquitous nonstick coating seen in kitchens, is derived from polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a type of fluorocarbon. It can linger in human tissue and the environment for years or perhaps decades before being eliminated. These chemicals interfere with human hormones, metabolism and body weight.

Investigation finds that PFAS are infiltrating our blood through BandAids and other common bandages

The investigation looked for PFAS compounds in the adhesive flaps and absorbent pads of bandages offered at CVS, Walmart, Rite Aid, Target and Amazon, among other large stores. When 40 bandages from 18 different brands were examined, quantifiable levels of fluorine were discovered in 26 of the brands. Four types of bandages made by Band-Aid contained more than 180 parts per million of organic fluorine, a vital component of PFAS forever chemicals.

The investigators said that PFAS chemicals, which are occasionally used to produce adhesives, are byproducts of regular production processes. Mamavation claims that the PFAS in bandages are probably there because of their resistance to grease and water.

After a person consumes food or drinks water contaminated with PFAS chemicals, the toxins can readily enter the bloodstream. Once PFAS enter the bloodstream, they can settle into healthy tissue and start to harm organs such as the kidneys, liver and immune system. Toxicologist and former chief of the National Toxicology Program Dr. Linda Birnbaum, who co-led the lab research, described the findings as "troubling" because the toxic chemicals come in close contact with open wounds.

"It's alarming to learn that bandages may also be exposing children and adults to PFAS because they are placed upon open wounds," Dr. Birnbaum stated. Since the research makes it clear that PFAS are not necessary for wound care, it is critical that the industry stop using them in order to safeguard the public from PFAS and switch to PFAS-free alternatives.

Bandages with PFAS include:

  • Band-Aid Flexible Fabric Comfortable Protection Bandages: 188 ppm organic fluorine on absorbent pad

  • Band-Aid OURTONE Flexible Fabric BR45 Bandages — absorbent pad contained 262 ppm organic fluorine.

They are trying to kill us. That much is clear. There are thousands of environmental toxins we are exposed to every day. If we properly tried to shield ourselves, we’d be locked in a cubicle with an air filter, wearing hazmat suits and never go out. The devil-may-care, “boldly go”, somewhat macho attitude suits me better. I play golf maybe 6 to 8 times a year at most. Not going to stop. It’s a beautifully frustrating game that challenges all the centers/chakras and is a great vehicle for personal observation and inner growth on multiple simultaneous levels. Love it/hate it. Perfect.

"They" are not hiding anymore! :-O

A Republican-backed bill that passed Tennessee’s Senate Judiciary Committee Monday would give pesticide and herbicide companies such as Bayer, the owner of Roundup, broader protection from lawsuits.

Senate Bill 527, sponsored by Sen. John Stevens of Huntingdon, would provide legal immunity to pesticide manufacturers as long as their federally-approved label doesn’t warn of a disease. Roundup’s Environmental Protection Agency label doesn’t disclose that their product could cause cancer, meaning under this potential law, the company couldn’t be sued for causing the disease.

Glyphosate can be mistaken for glycine and be stored in the body, creating all kinds of harm. For instance, collagen is made of the amino acids proline, glycine and hydroxyproline (it's the most abundant protein in the human body), and is the main component of fascia, which has many important roles in our anatomy. If glycine is being swapped with glyphosate, one can imagine that it doesn't improve those roles, quite the contrary! (Objective: Health did an episode about fascia in 2019. In addition, here's a "quantum" perspective on collagen/fascia.)

Foods that contain collagen would provide extra glycine (bone broth, legumes, meat, dairy, poultry, eggs, fish, etc) to counter glyphosate. I guess that taking some actual glycine supplements as well (e.g. for short periods at a time) would increase its amount in relation to glyphosate, so that the "abundance" of glycine would further aid in competing with glyphosate. (I saw a mention of this on a youtube video a while ago, but unfortunately can't locate it now.)
