Scientists flock to test 'free energy' discovery

A man who claims to have developed a free energy technology which could power everything from mobile phones to cars has received more than 400 applications from scientists to test it.

Sean McCarthy says that no one was more sceptical than he when Steorn, his small hi-tech firm in Dublin, hit upon a way of generating clean, free and constant energy from the interaction of magnetic fields. 'It wasn't so much a Eureka moment as a get-back-in-there-and-check-your-instruments moment, although in far more colourful language,' said McCarthy. But when he attempted to share his findings, he says, scientists either put the phone down on him or refused to endorse him publicly in case they damaged their academic reputations. So last week he took out a full-page advert in the Economist magazine, challenging the scientific community to examine his technology.

McCarthy claims it provides five times the amount of energy a mobile phone battery generates for the same size, and does not have to be recharged. Within 36 hours of his advert appearing he had been contacted by 420 scientists in Europe, America and Australia, and a further 4,606 people had registered to receive the results.

Somewhere around a year or so before paulnotbilly's post above, I was alerted to Steorn and followed their web site for a while, though they seemed to be very tight-lipped regarding progress of the supposed tests being done by volunteers, even though people were clamoring for news. Updates seemed to stop. I gave up and lost track of them.

Another recent discussion of free energy reminded me to check their site. _http://www.steorn.com/ On the video on the front page, McCarthy says they've pretty much nailed it down, they call it Orbo, and that this year, their goal is to get the technology into the hands of developers who will turn it to actual application (make products with it). In other words, Steorn won't build anything with Orbo themselves, but want to license the technology to others. Seems like a logical move for a research, but there's still something very reserved about the whole thing, a lack of independent testimonials, etc., or maybe I didn't look hard enough.

Maybe others would be interested in following this long story further, look at the Steorn blog, and the science, which I don't understand.

I think you are essentially spamming with this message. There are various discussions about "free energy" and it's implications on this forum already if you wish to discuss this topic. Just do a search for "free energy" (with quotes).

It's ok, but I think you are letting the horse run away with the driver here. Many people have met an untimely demise in the quest for exotic energy technologies, especially when they appear to actually have some sort of working model.

Richard Dolan mentioned towards the end in a recent presentation that exotic, free energy technologies could potentially be a double edged sword. While they could possibly lift a lot of people out of poverty, it might put a lot of destructive power into the hands of common individuals as well.

While I do not doubt the existence that exotic energy technologies exist that utilize principals little known to mainstream physics, I don't know if easy access to these technologies would really help people. How much have our current energy technologies helped people? They may make the lives of many millions of people easier from the standpoint of appliances, transportation, heating, etc, but at the same time they've turned this planet into a toxic dump and made warfare many times more "efficient". Without addressing the underlying pathologies that give the basis for our society, how would things be any different with some new source of energy?

It's one thing to make people aware of hidden things, but remember that partial knowledge is not really knowledge and can ultimately be a dangerous thing.
