Recently I stumbled upon this series and wanted to recommend it.
IMDB gives it the following description:
Personally I found this show pleasantly surprising, and see it as a positive dissociation alternative to many "gore promoting" series. It is a Canadian production and has now 10 seasons with 13 chapters in each season. Apparently there is even a joke that there are no Canadian actors that haven't appeared on the show. I actually tested it with David Hewlett (from Stargate Atlantis), and yep, he appeared there as well. :D
Anyways, some say that the plot and relationships are too simplistic in comparison to other recent shows, but I actually see it as an advantage. Perhaps due to its PG rating or some other reason, but the show indeed puts an emphasis on promoting good manners, instead of a shock factor. But who knows, maybe this got ruined in the later seasons? Don't know.
For now it is very fun and cute! They made sure to imitate the atmosphere of the period, and the detective stories are not always predictable. And they also throw a good measure of humor and imagination. In the show you can see a lot of famous historical figures like Tesla, H.G Wells, Arthur Conan Doyle, etc., that somehow end up in Toronto and get acquainted with detective Murdoch. Some are even end up being murder suspects!
I also liked how in development of the love story between main characters they put an emphasis on mutual admiration, mutual interests and appreciation of the intellectual aspects of their characters. But of course there are ups and dows and drama there as well.
There are also stories with paranormal and ufo plots. And despite Murdoch being a catholic, they don't ridicule anything, and even if there is a "scientific" reasoning being provided, they always leave a door open for some other explanation.
IMDB gives it the following description:
In the late 1890s, police Detective William Murdoch takes a new, more scientific approach to solving crimes. Assisted by coroner Dr. Julia Ogden and Constable George Crabtree, Murdoch introduces such concepts as finger marks and lie detecting machines. He has the support of his somewhat doubtful superior, Inspector Brackenreid, though at times, even he finds Murdoch's methods - and claims - somewhat astounding.
