NOAA Satellite failure

This story of failing weather satellites was on the national news yesterday, even though it first came out in the LA Times, in May, 2012.
Couldn't help thinking at the time that they may be planting seeds for an explanation of falling space debris. (aka meteors?)

Failing satellites jeopardize weather forecasting, report says
The number of U.S. satellites is expected to plummet over the next eight years, and the decline could impede weather forecasting, a National Academies report says....

The study, released last week by the nation's top science advisors, estimated that the fleet of science satellites operated by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration would "decline precipitously" from a peak of 110 probes last year to fewer than 30 in 2020.
I recall the news story yesterday mentioned the year 2017 for the crippling decline to have an effect.

Even so, if this story is on the up-and-up it also brings to mind a question of funding priorities (ie. drones/surveillance vs. accurate weather forecasting) Accurate weather forecasting utilizing the NOAA satellite system has become incredibly valuable tool for warning about dangerous weather developments and events throughout the globe.
"Consequences are likely to include slowing or even reversal of the steady gains in weather forecast accuracy over many years and degradation of the ability to assess and respond to natural hazards," investigators with the National Academies said.

Why would this not be a top funding priority especially with all the hype about "global warming"/climate change and the predictions of more dangerous storms because of it.
No major funding increases are planned for NASA and NOAA, which get about $17.7 billion and $5 billion each year, respectively, and cuts could be coming, given Washington's new-found push for austerity.

My mind can't help but entertain conspiracy theories a little bit.

Interesting.

Perhaps.

Or perhaps they know they cannot go any longer with this global warming hysteria (as it is getting too obvious that something else is going on) so they are trying to find an excuse to not monitor things (as hiding Truth becomes harder and harder).

Who knows. That is weird indeed.
