Normalization through media

Azur

The Living Force
I'm opening this thread because of something I spotted in another thread. See here.

The entry points to an 80s band's song, and for a time this band was popular. Knowing now what most members of the forum know because of the massive research that has been presented on the forum, I'd thought I'd ask what impression one is left with when reading these lyrics. And more importantly, what the message is (via youth directed media).

Lyrics:

Well I have street sense radar
Ooh, is supposed be news
You better lock up your daughters
You never know when we're due

Good news, bad news
It's all the same
Addicts on main streets
They give us the blame

Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
We're a sign of the times
Having fun ain't no crime
We're a sign of the times
Having fun all the time, yeah

Great impersonators
We broke all the rules
We laugh with our masks on
The joke is on you

You're getting furry
It does you no good
It's the same old story
It's a human zoo

Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
We're a sign of the times
Having fun ain't no crime
We're a sign of the times
Having fun all the time, yeah

My, my, my, my, yeah

Hey!
Hey!
Hey!
Hey!

Cha!
Cha!

I see a sign up ahead
Got it's lights flashing red
I can see you're the same
These are the words that I read

Long live rock and roll (Roll!)
Long live rock and roll (Roll!)
Long live rock and roll
It's gonna save your soul

Good news, bad news
It's all the same
Addicts on main streets
Please, please give us a break

Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
We're a sign of the times
Having fun ain't no crime
We're a sign of the times
Having fun all the time

Hey!
We're just a sign of the times
We're just a sign of the times
We're just a sign of the times, yeah
We're a sign of the times
Having fun all the time
Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!

At first, the impression was "another rock & roll anti-establishment song."

The second read drew a red flag here:

Great impersonators
We broke all the rules
We laugh with our masks on
The joke is on you

You're getting furry
It does you no good
It's the same old story
It's a human zoo

And here:

You better lock up your daughters
You never know when we're due

This appears manipulative:

I can see you're the same
These are the words that I read
Long live rock and roll
It's gonna save your soul

The fact that it's an 80s song is curious.

Azur,

There may be something wrong with the links in the 'What are you listening to' thread and this one. Whenever I click on eitherlink a security alert comes up, in Firefox (which I use at home) and IE (at work). The alert has something to do with an unsigned certificate. Firefox suggests it may be due to someone trying to duplicate the forum's site - it only happens with your links however.

I had the same thing happen...

Same here. The problem is in the url, I think. There is an "s" in the http which means "secure". When I copied the url without the 's' in the http, I went to the proper link.

Yep, that was it. The URL had the "s" in it. (I set my bookmark to always use the Secure channel, in case I surf from client sites).

Sorry about that!

This is the bit that caught my attention the most.

The above is pretty suggestive of how a psychopath (at the very least a pathological) would see normal people.

And this song seems to promote that this is all OK and in fact it is fun and normal, so go ahead!

I wonder if the lyricist knew opera. In Verdi’s Rigoletto the title character admits to being a despicable wretch whose life only has beauty and value in his daughter who he keeps sheltered from a libertine society and closely guarded. She is abducted by the courtiers of the licentious Duke who rapes her.

After seeking revenge by hiring an assassin, Rigoletto discovers his daughter was murdered instead.

Apparantly the album that song came from (critical condition) was hastily done as a follow up to Quiet Riot's completely unexpected success from "Mental Health".

Considering how self-involved the members appear to have been, during that time, there's probably little more to it than projection of their view of themselves as rebels and madmen, aggressing from their perceived self-importance and previous success.

Other than that, one could probably read into it whatever one wants to.

But that's just my take. Others might have a different view.
