Violent weather in the North Sea killed an oil worker for a Norwegian firm and, separately, prompted BP to evacuate an oil field because a barge has broken loose and is drifting out of control in the storm.
Statoil, a Norwegian company, and COSL -- China Oilfield Services Limited -- issued a statement saying they had learned "with great sadness" that one person had died and two were injured when a wave broke over a drilling rig Wednesday.
The rig, called the COSL Innovator, is under contract to Statoil at the Troll field in the North Sea, west of Bergen, a city on Norway's southwestern coast.
The injured people have been taken by helicopter to shore, the statement said.
Meanwhile, BP said it is working to completely evacuate a North Sea oil field because a barge is drifting out of control in the turbulent seas.
BP says it employs 235 people in the Valhall oil field. Valhall is in the southern Norwegian North Sea, 210 miles (340 kilometers) southwest of the Norwegian city of Stavanger. The oil field has eight platforms.

"Throughout the night, four helicopters evacuated people to other nearby platforms and onshore," BP spokesman Toby Odone told CNN.
He said BP planned to shut down the oil field Thursday morning.
The Eide Marine Group, which owns the barge, tells CNN it has located it and is tracking. But a spokesman for the group said it was waiting for daylight before trying to take control of the barge.
The spokesman said the barge is 360 feet (110 meters) long and it became unattached in rough weather while being towed by a tugboat.
The barge is now drifting north, and ConocoPhillips, which operates an oil field to the north of Valhall, is watching warily -- and has evacuated 145 people from the Eldfisk Center.
Production from the Eldfish and Embla oil fields has been shut down, ConocoPhillips said.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- One oil worker was killed and hundreds of others were evacuated from offshore drilling platforms as violent weather ripped across the North Sea.
The Norwegian-based Statoil and COSL -- China Oilfield Services Limited -- said two others were injured when a 60-foot wave broke over the COSL Innovator drilling rig, also causing damages across the rig. More than 100 workers were evacuated off the platform as Storm Frank tore through the area.
At the same time, oil company BP said 150 people were evacuated from an offshore drilling platform after an unmanned barge broke loose in rough weather.
The barge is drifting out of control in the Valhall oil field. Some 85 workers were left aboard as a tug boat was trying to regain control of the 360-foot barge.
Storm Frank is responsible for massive flooding across Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England.

A fierce storm in the North Sea forced oil firms to evacuate rigs and shut down production on Thursday, with drilling installations under threat from a drifting barge that strong winds had ripped from its anchor.
The drifting barge missed BP's Valhall platform in the North Sea by some two kilometers, a spokeswoman for the Rescue Coordination Centre for southern Norway told Reuters.
"The barge drifted past by some two kilometers. The danger is over. There are no other installations between the barge and the coast of Norway," Borghild Eldoen said in an interview.
"It is now up to the owners of the barge to stop it before it reaches the coast."
