Not everyone is getting their fluoride. Something must be done!

With the Kidney Foundation publicly coming out with some truth about fluoride, as reported today at SOTT, the control system kicks into overdrive to stamp out this seditious thinking. I was not sure whether to put this in the health threads, but I think it probably fits better here with the Orwellian material.

Many Americans still do not get fluoridated water

By Will Dunham Thu Jul 10, 2:58 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Water systems serving about 30 percent of Americans are not giving them fluoridated water, six decades after fluoridation was started as a public health measure to prevent tooth decay, officials said on Thursday.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention hails the reduction in dental cavities due to adding fluoride to public water supplies as one of the top 10 public health achievements of the 20th century.

Most Americans get their water from municipal or regional community water systems. A new CDC report showed that as of 2006, 69 percent of people in the United States who get water from these systems received fluoridated water, up from 65 percent in 2000 and 62 percent in 1992.

That means that while 184 million Americans get fluoridated water from community water systems, 82 million do not.

"This is one of the dirty little secrets -- that the whole nation has not yet embraced fluoridation of water, which has enormous public health benefits," Dr. Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association, said in a telephone interview.

Fluoridation of public water supplies was introduced in 1945 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

"It's still an under-utilized, very effective public health measure," Dr. William Bailey of the CDC's Division of Oral Health, who led the report, said in a telephone interview.

Some major cities still do not fluoridate their water supplies, including: San Diego; Portland, Oregon; Honolulu, Hawaii; and Wichita, Kansas. San Diego has committed to begin fluoridating its water by May 2010.

In California, the most populous of the 50 U.S. states, only 27 percent of people served by community systems were getting fluoridated water as of 2006, the CDC said. Only Hawaii (8 percent) and New Jersey (23 percent) were lower.

Fluoridation has remained controversial among some people. In fact, some opponents in the 1950s denounced it as a communist plot, which was lampooned in director Stanley Kubrick's 1964 Cold War satire "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb."

Current opponents argue the fluoride being added to water may cause a health problems such as weak bones and bone cancer, an assertion the CDC rejects.

Asked if there is any responsible evidence showing negative health effects due to fluoridated water, Bailey said, "No, not at the levels that we use in community water systems."

The CDC report showed other states with low percentages of people served by community systems getting fluoridated water included: Oregon (27 percent), Montana (31), Idaho (31), Wyoming (36), Louisiana (40) and New Hampshire (43). Fourteen states topped 90 percent. Washington D.C., was at 100 percent.

"Most people are complacent about the issue because they just naturally assume they live in a city that's fluoridated," Bailey said.

Fluoride is added to water -- either in powder or liquid form -- at water treatment plants, normally at levels of about one part per million, Bailey said.

Roughly 10 percent of Americans, mostly in rural areas, get water from wells, and this typically is not fluoridated. Also, many Americans drink bottled water that is not fluoridated.

The government's goal is for 75 percent of U.S. residents on community systems to be getting fluoridated water by 2010.

Mind boggling, eh?

"Responsible evidence"????? So what would "irresponsible evidence" be? Evidence that challenges the alleged harmlessness of mass fluoridation?

Geesh.

What I find peculiar, is that water fluoridation is not practiced in Austria, China, the Czech Republic, Iceland, India, Italy, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Norway, Scotland, Sweden, or Switzerland. What reason could there be for the pressure you fluorise the water in North-America but not in Europe?!?

Good question. Boy, that statement really makes me think how "sheltered"/"brainwashed" we are here in the goold ole USofA... But onto your question... Perhaps the same reason many Europeans resist Genetically Modified (GM) Crops?

I don't know either but it's mainly used in toothpastes in Belgium for example.

I don't know the exactitude of those claims but they seem coherent :

ADA's Fluoridation Facts Short Answer
No country in Europe has banned community water fluoridation.

ADA's Fluoridation Facts Long Answer

The claim that fluoridation is banned in Europe is frequently used by fluoridation opponents. In truth, European countries construct their own water quality regulations within the framework of the 1980 European Water Quality Directive. The Directive provides maximum admissible concentrations for many substances, one of which is fluoride. The Directive does not require or prohibit fluoridation, it merely requires that the fluoride concentration in water does not exceed the maximum permissible concentration.228

Many fluoridation systems that used to operate in Eastern and Central Europe did not function properly and, when the Iron Curtain fell in 1989-90, shut down because of obsolete technical equipment and lack of knowledge as to the benefits of fluoridated water.229 Water fluoridation is not practical in many European countries because of complex water systems with numerous water sources. As an alternative to water fluoridation, many European countries have opted for salt fluoridation, in addition to the use of fluoride toothpaste for topical benefits, as a means of bringing the protective benefits of fluoride to the public.

Again, no European country has specifically imposed a "ban" on fluoridation, it has simply not been implemented for a variety of technical or political reasons.

As if  "Flouride for children's dental needs" propaganda is not sufficient enough, they started propaganda through Kidney foundation . they already flouridated every food we eat through pesticides. it is even a FDA standard. According to FDA standards, these Foods Can be Fumigated with Sulfuryl Fluoride - dried eggs, wheat , oats, processed foods, barley, corn etc.

Here in Sweden we have fluoride in our drinking waters. But it is natural 'flouride' becouse of it's coming from our bedrocks, but I guess it's not as dangerous as manufactored fluoride but that doesn't mean it is not dangerous.

I try to keep in mind total fluoride intake. Tea, especially green tea contains fluoride. Plus many other environmental sources.
I don't drink municipal water (fluoridation is mandatory here. :O) or use a fluoride containing tooth paste. Those of us who enjoy tea are getting plenty fluoride.
Good article regarding total intake etc.

It is actually used in almost all toothpastes. I assume that's no different in other countries, right?

Our family has been using non fluoridated toothpaste for the last 2 years and also we have a gravity fed water purifier with attachments that remove fluoride. Our teeth are just fine without the recommended doses of fluoride.

Yes, but make sure to look on the box as their are some that do and some that don't. Grocery stores in my area don't carry the brand but Wal-Mart does and the health food stores as well.

Most excellent point Pink/Beau  Thanks for following up. :ninja: Also I found the anti-tartar formula in that line makes my teeth hurt due to the stripping action. Ow. They used to have just one basic forumla years ago then recently added all of this new fangled extra stuff for marketing imho. Why can't they just keep it simple...sigh.

Hi Arc,
Interesting. Wondering if you could post this product in the Products and Services section?

More evidence against Flouride.

Govt. Report Says Fluoride Added to Water Supply May Harm Population
by David Gutierrez

(NaturalNews) A government-sponsored report has concluded that levels of fluoride that people are regularly exposed to in drinking water can cause serious malfunctioning of the thyroid glad, leading to even more serious health problems.

"A low level of thyroid hormone can increase the risk of cardiac disease, high cholesterol, depression, and, in pregnant woman, decreased intelligence of offspring," said study co-author Kathleen Thiessen.

The comprehensive review of the scientific literature on fluoride exposure and thyroid toxicity was conducted by a panel appointed by the National Research Council of the National Academies (NRC). It found that fluoride exposure was associated with low levels of thyroid and parathyroid hormones, and an abnormally enlarged thyroid gland (goiter). They also found that fluoride tended to concentrate in the thyroid more than in any organ but the kidneys.

"Fluoride has detrimental effects on the thyroid gland of healthy males at 3.5 mg a day. With iodine deficiency, the effect level drops to 0.7 milligrams a day for an average male," said Robert Carton, an environmental scientist with 30 years of experience working for the government.

Most fluoridated water supplies contain fluoride concentrations of 1.0 milligrams per liter, meaning that an adult male would need to drink less than a gallon of water per day to reach toxic levels. An iodine-deficient male would need to drink less than a liter.

"Many Americans are exposed to fluoride in the ranges associated with thyroid effects, especially for people with iodine deficiency," Thiessen said. "The recent decline in iodine intake in the U.S could contribute to increased toxicity of fluoride for some individuals."

The report concluded that the EPA's safe threshold for fluoride in drinking water (four parts per million) is too high.

A prior NRC report also found evidence that fluoride increases the uptake of aluminum into the brain, damages bone health, and may even lead to bone cancer.
