Nuclear Reactor in Use 1.8 Billion Years Ago

Keep in mind that 1.8 billion years ago there was very little life on Earth. Very simple organisms only. So unless you are taking about time travellers going back and starting this reactor up, I don't see how it could be anything other than an, admittedly very odd, natural occurrence. I realize that the Cassies have some issues with the geological time scale however. Nevertheless, this is a VERY long time ago. I am not sure how breathable the atmosphere was back then. I would have to look it up.

Also, current enriched uranium reactors can run on fuel enriched to 3% U-235. Typically, enriched uranium fuel is 2.5 to 5% U-235. Some of the Canadian built CANDU reactors don't use enriched uranium at all. They run on natural uranium with 0.7% U-235. These reactors, however, require heavy water.

Still, Oklo is a very strange phenomenon. I have never heard of anyone finding a similar site anywhere else. As far as I know it is geologically unique.

If you've not yet read Michael Cremo's 'Forbidden Archeology', you might want to. It will shake up your idea that there were only 'very simple' organisms on the planet 1.8 billion years ago.

Took a look at the Wikipedia entry for Michael Cremo. Wow! Had no idea that anyone has suggested that human habitation on Earth went back THAT far! Would have to read the book to offer any useful opinion of the theory. I am waiting for my copy of "Secret History of the World" to arrive. That's next on my reading list. Thanks for the head's up though. It is good to have one's assumptions challenged.

Yes, well, 1.8 billion IS a long time but if there is one thing I've learned is that we, as a species, have NO idea what our true history is, or what the true history of this planet is. We're trying to put pieces together, but every time someone says, "that can't have happened" it's really worthwhile to remember that we don't know and that there is a lot of evidence out there that suggests otherwise. Plus, Cremo's book is really interesting!
