Omni Magazine and the CERN supercollider

Does anyone happen to recall the magazine Omni. It was geared for those of higher intelligence. The only way I got the chance to read them, was over an old girl friends house. Her brother had a subscription for them.

Why I've linked the magazine with the CERN supercollider, is, I was reading a story out of the magazine once, It was placed at a future date, and to the best of my recall, it was about the use of a supercollider much like CERN, the focus of the story is about a project they were running in the SC, that was similar to the one they are attempting, and if I'm not mistake it had to do with the big bang. At any rate, I think the results were disasterous, I can't be sure as it was some time ago, when I read the short story, and I'm not quite sure if I finished it, I leaning towards not having finished the story, the best I can remember.

Noting the Prof Steven Hawking as serious reservations about a current project at CERN, was what jarred my memory of having read the story, now if I could just remember which issue it was *Fat Chance*, as I have located the archives online for the mag. Nice Eh.

Oh here's the link, should anyone like to peruse them.

Hi DonnieG,

Luckily you added the archive link! ;D

I went over there to inspect and then clicked on the link Browse by Subject / Keywords. Turns out there is only one reference for the term super collider so finding it was easy enough. Your article can be found in Omni Magazine October 1989 (Vol. 12, number 1) which was a special anniversary issue with trends and predictions for the year 2000 and beyond.

When opened in full screen, it has a search box on top which allows a search in that specific issue. Your article turns out to have been an interview with Leon Lederman starting on page 50; this is the direct link:

Happy (re-)reading! :)

You're welcome. ;)

I just hope that --now you have seen how things work on archive.org-- you and all others who read this, can do your searching more effectively in the future.

Then we all would have gained. :flowers:
