Palm Leaf Libraries

I have searched the forum for this topic but i haven't found anything specific.

First of all i will quote some words for a better understanding of what these libraries might be.

The legend of Sage Bhrigu

Many thousands of years ago the Lord of the universe and God of the three Lokas, Lord Sri Vishnu Narayana was having a sleep on the bed of the Cobra. The Goddess Lakshmi was respectfully nursing his feet.

At the very same time, the Maharishi Bhrigu presented himself to the Vaykunth Loka at the entrance.

Two Doorkeepers – Jai and Vijay - were standing at the entrance to the Vaykunth Loka. First, they welcomed Bhrigu Rishi, but then they told him to wait and not to enter right away, since Lord Sri Vishnu was sleeping.

Not being allowed entrance to Lord Sri Vishnu Narayana, the Maharishi Bhrigu got very angry and said to Jai and Vijay: "By stopping the Maharishi Bhrigu you have insulted the most great Brahmin soul. Due to that you can get a curse, which will force you to be reborn on the Earth at least three times."

While listening to this threat from Maharishi Bhrigu, Jai and Vijay both bended down their heads and were very silent. Now the Bhrigu Rishi could enter the door without anybody stopping him.

The Maharishi Bhrigu then entered the place where Lord Sri Vishnu Narayana was sleeping with Goddess Lakshmi at his feet. When Bhrigu Rishi saw this, he became full of anger, because he thought that Lord Vishnu was not really sleeping, but only pretending to sleep just to insult him.

This was the time, when the Maharishi Bhrigu with his right leg kicked the chest of Lord Sri Vishnu. When he was hit Lord Vishnu opened his eyes and stood up.

Lord Vishnu was astonished to see the Bhrigu Rishi standing there. So he bended down his head, folded his hands, and said to Bhrigu Rishi: "My Lord, my chest is the strongest thing in the world, like a mountain, but your feet are so soft. Maybe you got hurt while kicking me. So please forgive me for that."

While listening to the words of Lord Vishnu, the Bhrigu Rishi got very calm and felt very guilty, and he asked the God please to forgive him.

As all this happened, Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, got very angry, and she said to Maharishi Bhrigu: "By behaving this badly towards my husband, you have insulted me. Therefore I now give a curse, so that you and your fellow Brahmins will always live in poverty begging for your living. I will never come to your home."

After listening to this the Bhrigu Rishi said: "Poverty Lakshmi! Whatever crime I did was in anger, and I have already asked the Lord Sri Vishnu to forgive me. By not thinking very nicely, you have now given this curse to me and my fellow Brahmins. But anyway, what has happened has happened. I will now write a Jyotish Grantha, from which the Brahmins can predict all about the past, present and future of every person in the world. They will get good knowledge as well as good earnings from this. They will be able to earn their livelihood. And this way you have got to come to their home anyhow!"

Having said this Maharishi Bhrigu went back to his ashram, and wrote his book known as "Bhrigu Samhita" which contains the life-stories of the past, present and future of all the people in the world on the basis of their Janma-kundalies.

First of all, Bhrigu Rishi taught the principles of this Grantha to his own son and disciple Shukra. And from the lips of Shukra it was little by little distributed to the Brahmins all over the world.

On the basis of this the Brahmins have predicted about the past, present and future, and made a living from that. This is the story about the Bhrigu Samhita.

Nadi in Sanskrit means the pulse, the subtle channels in the body, a division of time (24 minutes). In Tamil, the language of Tamil Nadu, Nadi means in search of. To be in search of the past, the reason of existence, to search the roots and essence of the past. In Yoga and Ayurveda, Nadi are the subtle channels that give message to the different parts of the body plus the Ida, Pingala and Sushumna nadi. Grantha is a great book of knowledge.

Nadi Granthas or the great books of subtle knowledge, are recordings of the Sapta Rishi. Sapta means seven and Rishi means Sages. Brahma conceived the Seven Great Sages out of his mind to help in his creation of the world. They were Bhrigu, Angira, Atri, Vishvamitra, Kashyapa, Vashishta, and Agastya. They knew the key to creation and the destiny of each and every individual born and yet to be born. What is their purpose? Why they were born? What karma they bring into their life? These Granthas were not written as predictions but as records of life and information on secret knowledge. This knowledge was not restricted to astrology alone but to other subjects including Science, Ayurveda, Yoga, Spirituality, Alchemy, Occult and Jyotisha. Their thoughts and knowledge was passed down orally from one generation to another and then finally written down on palm leafs. They were originally in Sanskrit but they also got translated into Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam and other regional languages. A collection of palm leafs become one chapter within a Granthas. So a complete Grantha could be many thousands of palm leafs.

The Nadis are equivalent to books today. The only difference is that Nadis are only filled with profound knowledge and the keys to existence on all levels- practical, spiritual and subtle. The knowledge within these Nadis is pure and profound. The mind of the interpreter may not be able to grasp the great information that the Sages are trying to impart and therefore bring the reading down to a more material level.

Some are not complete due to the loss or destruction of the leaves. Each of rishis has a Grantha from which his knowledge is dispersed. These Granthas include Agastya nadi, Brighu nadi, Brahma nadi, Shiva nadi, Kaushika nadi ( Vishwamitra) etc. The nadi reader traditionally follows the writings on just one of the great rishis

The records were kept in many libraries in ancient India. For centuries few realized the importance of these records and the nadi manuscripts were left to rot. Under the patronage of the Chola Dynasty that ruled South India from 10th to 13th Century AD, the leafs were classified and kept in the library of Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. Other kings around India also helped in the preservation of these Nadi granthas as well.

Many of these leafs were destroyed by the invading armies of the Mughals and the British. While the Mughals asked them to be burnt, British took numerous Nadi back to Britain but they sold most connected to astrology. Valluvar community from Vaitheeswaran Koil in Tamil Nadu chiefly bought there. This is why most of the Nadis today are connected to astrology.

Each Nadi in Tamil Nadu is made up of ola or palm leaf, written in Vatta ezhuthu, a Tamil script, with a sharp, pen like instrument called ezhuthani. Rubbing peacock oil on auspicious occasions preserves the palm leaves. Peacock is also the vehicle for Murughun (Mars). So the subtle hint is that the great Lord Murughun helps preserve and protect this ancient knowledge. This is why there are so many Nadi readers outside one of Mars’s main places of power in Vaitheeswaran Koil.

There are other centre of Nadis. In Hoshiarpur, Punjab, a family og Bhrigu nadi readers are found.

Vaitheeswaran Koil, the Primary Centre for Nadi
There are many centres of Nadi in India. The main one remains in Vaitheeswaran Koil in Tamil Nadu. Due to the patronage of the Chola kings, Nadi Granthas were translated and kept in the library at Thanjavur, which is near Vaitheeswaran Koil. When the British sold them, most of these came to be in Vaitheeswaran Koil, where the Pullirukkuvelur Temple is dedicated to the healing powers of Shiva. Unlike most other temples that are known by the presiding deity, Lord Murughan is a celebrated deity in Vaitheeswaran Koil. Murughan is the son of Shiva, therefore comes from the same lineage.

The Nadi Jyotisha flourishes under the protection of Shiva and Murughan. They ply their traditional trade interpreting the knowledge of the Nadis and also telling of the upayes or remedies for the past karma. One should go for a Nadi reading with devotion. If you are skeptical about them, it is likely to bring you face to face with the wrong interpreter.

The Granthas of Nadi Jyotisha
There are many texts of Nadi Jyotisha. Some give obscure and often secret techniques of Vedic Astrology. They give the key to precise interpretation. Among them include Bhrighu Nandi nadi, Bhrighu nadi, Chandra Kala Nadi, Sapta Rishi Nadi etc.

The Nadi readers are not astrologers but decoders of ancient scriptures. All they are doing is deciphering the data. His skills are limited to reading what is written. If the nadi leafs are incomplete or he has not found the right nadi or the time is not correct for you, then this information cannot be right. In fact the time has to be right for the individual to get the right nadi. This information is very precious and not everyone is ready to receive it. This is the reason so many get the wrong or incomplete information. The Rishis had only wanted those who were ready to receive information, to get it. In essence it is not the fault of the Nadi or the reader if you do not get the right information that chronicles the past, present and future.

Nadi reader tries to find the right Nadi by taking the thumb impression. According to the Nadi Granthas there are 1008 types of thumb impressions and these will narrow down the batch of Nadis where the story of your life is told. The impression of the right thumb for men and the left one for women is taken. The thumbprint has to match the particular batch of palm leafs for the reading to take place. Despite the claims of the nadi readers, it is impossible to find the right nadi for everyone.

Nadi Shastra is a unique form of astrology in which an individual can read his destiny inscribed on Palm leaves thousands of years ago. It is one of the most amazing confirmation of the intuitive powers and developed knowledge of the ancient sages, who possessed the capability of seeing the future of the entire universe. An expert Nadi reader reads one`s past, present and future with unbelieving details. The most amazing fact remains that a person reads his/ her Nadi leaf only at a predestined time in his/her life; which have been predestined thousands of years ago. Thus, a person learns about his life patterns by going through palm leaves that provide actual facts of his life on the exact time it has was meant to be told. A great deal of Nadi Shastra is based purely on astrological foundations. Other readings combine astrology and palmistry. There are various `Samhitas` (Nadi literature) named after various ancient Rishis.

In the Nadi shashtra, the thousands of life patterns are written, based on the possible astrological combinations. It is presumed that the Rishis like Agasthya, Vashista, Kausika, etc. had outlined the lives of each person on palm leaves through their yogic and intuitive powers. Precise date of origin of Nadi Shastra is not known. But sages and yogis of about 2000 years ago are the authentic writers of the Nadi leaves. They wrote the destiny of each and every human being to be born on this earth. They even did the prediction of the time when the individual will read his leaf. It is believed that the records were originally written on animal skin and later were transferred to palm leaves. However, this knowledge is kept sacred and is handed down from generations to generations, purposely excluding any public disclosure. Applying oil extracted from Peacocks` blood on auspicious muhurtas has preserved the palm leaves.

Although Nadi readers and leaves are scattered all over India, most of them are centered in Tamil Nadu. The ancient sages have written theses calculations in Sanskrit, which were later translated in Tamil. That is the reason Nadi shastra is often referred as the most prominent branch in Tamil Astrology. Under the "Chola" ruler ship, these records were translated in Tamil language. Maratha and Chola rulers were the great patrons of this art who endeavored to preserve these sacred records. Their major record collection was kept in Saraswati Mahal library in Tanjore. After the British invasion, the palm leaves were sold to various keen buyers.

The Valluvar community of south India, who were the ardent followers of astrology, bought maximum leaves. Astrology families of vaitheeswarankoil, near Chennai bought them as well. This is where the main hub of Nadi shastra resides till date. But, Nadi reading is not prejudiced to any caste, region, or nationality. All human beings have their destiny recorded and preserved. Due to manhandling of the leaves, it may be possible that a leaf corresponding to one person may not be available to one particular Nadi reader, and might be there with the other reader somewhere else in India. Still, many people have the humbling experience of encountering the details pertaining to their lives on a mere leaf meant for them ever since thousands of years ago.

Nadi ShastraThere are more than 24 Granthas on Nadi shastra. Most of them are named after the sages who developed them. Many of the Granthas, still in original Sanskrit texts, are stored in libraries or temple vaults. Many Nadi leaves are also stacked away for the use of future generations. Some important Nadi Granthas are Guru Nadi; Sutra Nadi; Markandeya Nadi; Nandi Nadi; Suka Nadi; Sudha Nadi; Saraswati Nadi; Dhruva Nadi; Satya Nadi; and Chandra Nadi. Amongst these, Sukra and Dhruva Nadis are important ones; they give fairly accurate life history.

There are two types of original Granthas on Dhruva Nadis, namely satyacharya and jai muni, based on Sayan system unlike other Nadis that are based on Nirayan system. Satya Nadi deals with the prominent people in every field, along with details about their life and accomplishments. In various Nadis like Bhrigu Samhita, horoscope is related with the Nadi shastra, the outcome of which is derived by different permutations and combinations. This is unlike many Nadis who use Nadi amsha (part of any sign) and go on detailing about person`s event and happening in life.

Reading in Nadi Shastra
To begin with, a Nadi seeker`s thumbprint is taken in order to select the appropriate possibilities of leaves stack. After a rudimentary classification, search of the right leaf begins. The search is usually time taking, and may range from few minutes (if some people are quite lucky), to few hours, to few days and even years. In step two, certain questions are asked related to our present situations in life. Accordingly stacks are discarded or considered for further investigation. Finally a leaf is reached, where all your answers are predicted correctly. The leaf is further read out to give details of one`s parents, and even spouse`s name. This forms the general reading, where your past and future is read broadly, your karmic pattern is described, and even methods to remove the bad influences are explained by the Nadi reader. Nadi readings are classified as `kandams` or chapters. A reader then can go in further details of your life based on the twelve houses of your horoscope. It will read the twelve chapters with specific attributes of your life.

Whatever the controversies related with this branch of astrology is, the fact remains that Nadi shastra is getting more and more popular in modern times. The recipients of the predictions provided by it are deeply impressed by the detailed revelation of facts. Indeed it`s a miraculous experience to know that one`s life have been written on a palm leaf thousands of years ago, by the representatives of profound wisdom of ancient India. Nadi shastra is the most amazing accomplishment of ancient India. It strengthens our belief in destiny being the guiding force of our existence.

These writings were the best i have found in english. Others may find some more information about those libraries and if it is a fact or fiction.
I have read some different impressions on that and in fact it was the first time that somebody claimed that the indetification works through thumb impression. Others have said that they just had to say their name and the date of their birth.

Does somebody have any further information about those libraries or have experienced himself?
