Phoenix Dust Storm: Arizona Hit With Monstrous 'Haboob' (PHOTOS/VIDEO)

A monstrous dust storm roared through Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday night, delaying flights and causing power outages for thousands of people.

The AP reports that the massive dust cloud, also known as a "haboob," was around 5,000 feet when it arrived in Phoenix, but radar data reveals that it reached heights anywhere from 8,000 to 10,000 feet high prior. The storm appeared to be around 50 miles wide in some areas, KSAZ-TV reported. The dust storm originated in Tucson, and was a part of Arizona's monsoon season.

According to CNN, the dust storm prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to issue a ground stop on flights at Phoenix's Sky Harbor Airport for about an hour and 15 minutes. At it's peak, the storm left 10,000 customers without power, Jenna Shaver of the Arizona Public Service told CNN.

Check out breathtaking video footage and photos of the massive dust storm that swallowed Phoenix below.

Man-O-Man... The Times Are A Changing...

I heard that these dust storms are fairly common in AZ, but that this was a particularly huge one. They have been in a long drought, so it could be the beginning of another dust bowl situation if the drought continues. Yeah it was scary looking, it just swept over and swallowed the whole town like something out of a horror movie!

These storms are common in the monsoon season here in Phoenix, but last night's was exceptional in every way. It was massive, it was dark, and I got stuck in it in my car. It was a terrifying drive home. Visibility was measured in feet. Normally you are supposed to pull over and park, but there was no realistic option to prevent someone from just rear ending me. Today dirt is everywhere, and even the sky remains dirty. This storm was an unusual event.

Glad you made it home okay. It really does look incredible.
