ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A U.S. Air Force pilot was reported to be safe after a single-seat F-35 fighter jet crashed Tuesday during a training exercise at a base in Alaska.

The pilot experienced an “inflight malfunction” but was able to eject from the aircraft, Col. Paul Townsend, commander of the 354th Fighter Wing, told a news conference. The plane crashed during the landing phase of the flight at Eielson Air Force Base, he said.

The pilot had declared an inflight emergency prior to the crash and was in stable condition and being evaluated at a medical facility, he said.

The crash, which occurred early Tuesday afternoon, caused significant damage to the aircraft, the Air Force said in a statement.

Eielson Air Force Base is about 25 miles south of Fairbanks.

Townsend said in the statement said the Air Force would conduct “a thorough investigation in hopes to minimize the chances of such occurrences from happening again.”

Eielson was selected in 2016 to host 54 F-35s, spawning an expansion that cost more than a half-billion dollars that was to include 36 new buildings and dozens of housing units. The expansion included about 3,500 new active duty airmen and their dependents.

With the capability to fly more than 12 hours at a time, the F-35 can reach almost anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere in one mission.

In May, an F-35 fighter jet on its way from Texas to Edwards Air Force Base near Los Angeles crashed after the pilot stopped to refuel in New Mexico. The pilot was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

In October, a Marine investigation blamed the pilot of an F-35 for ejecting from the aircraft when he didn’t need to, causing the fighter to fly unmanned for 11 minutes before it crashed in rural South Carolina in 2023.

A US-contracted surveillance plane crashed in the Philippines on Thursday morning, killing all four personnel on board, including one US military service member, according to US Indo-Pacific Command.

The crash occurred in Maguindanao del Sur in the southern Philippines. Images from the crash site, confirmed by a US defense official, show the wreckage of a Beechcraft King Air 350 in a rice field.

The official said the service member killed in the crash was a US Marine. It is unclear if the three defense contractors were also US citizens.

The twin-engine turboprop aircraft was contracted by the Defense Department to conduct intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance at the request of the Philippines, Indo-Pacific Command said. The crash occurred during a “routine mission,” and the cause of the crash is under investigation.

The aircraft is registered to Metrea Special Aerospace ISR, Inc., according to publicly available data. Metrea’s website shows a Beechcraft King Air 350 – the type of aircraft that crashed – and advertises “integrated, turnkey Airborne Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (AISR) solutions to our defense partners.”

The crash comes one day after new Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth held his first call with his counterpart from the Philippines, Secretary of National Defense Gilberto Teodoro, Jr. According to a readout of the call, the two discussed the importance of deterrence in the South China Sea and enhancing the capabilities of the Philippine military.

King Air small plane crashes on avenue in Barra Funda, West Zone of São Paulo, hits bus and leaves 2 dead
A small plane crashed at around 7:20 a.m. on Friday (7) on one of the busiest avenues in Barra Funda, in the West Zone of São Paulo. When it tried to land there, it hit a bus and an explosion occurred. Two people on the plane died. Seven others were rescued on the ground.
According to the Fire Brigade, two charred bodies were found inside the aircraft.

Among the injured are a motorcyclist who was passing on the road and was hit by debris from the plane and a woman who was on the bus. Five other people were rescued and taken to hospitals in the region, including the bus driver, who was treated for an anxiety attack.

The model of the plane is a King Air F90, which seats eight people. The fire department reported that only two people were in the aircraft.

UPDATED: Navy Growler Crashes Off Coast of San Diego, Crew Ejects and Recovered

The Coast Guard recovered the crew of an EA-18G Growler after they ejected from the aircraft off the coast of Point Loma, Calif., USNI News has learned.

The crew will be taken by the Coast Guard for medical evaluation following the crash, a Navy official told USNI News. Another Navy official told USNI News that the crew was recovered at 10:28 a.m. PST. The aircraft was from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island and in San Diego for an exercise. The Growler was not assigned to the air wing that is currently training with the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group.

According to radio traffic at the time of the crash, the two-seat electronic attack aircraft took off from NAS North Island. Shortly after leaving the runway, the crew of the aircraft ejected, and the plane crashed in the water. The two aviators were initially picked up by a sport fishing charter before they were transferred to a Customs and Border patrol vessel, according to radio traffic. According to ABC 10, the aviators were taken to UC San Diego Health.

Following recovery of the crew, emergency crews were responding to the debris and fuel from the crash, according to radio traffic.
