"Animal rights groups say 10,000 dogs are slaughtered during the festival each year, and that many are electrocuted, burned and skinned alive. (They are boiled alive too.) Pictures posted online show flayed dogs, dogs hanging from meat hooks, and piles of dog corpses on the side of the road."
This is an absolute abomination. I hear some people say "well, we eat pigs etc." as if that is the same. I think that is just intelectual lazyness. The pig has been farmed for thousands of years to serve as an animal for food while the dog has been humans most loyal and best animal friend for many thousands of years.
It is also important to emphasize that most Chinese citizens don't consume dog meat, this a regional type thing and mostly black market stuff. There are in fact devoted activists in China fighting against this.
I mean, this is not only meat consumption, these dogs are skinned and burned ALIVE and they say the meat is tasty then. That is something a creature like a reptile would do for Christ sake.
These dogs last moments of life on earth are filled in ABSOLUTE agony as they are put to the worst possible torture while being betrayed by the being that it is supposed to serve and be it's friend.
Metaphisicaly speaking I think this could have consequences for our relation as species since living beings do work kinda like a network, perhaps other dogs feel this kind of thing on SOME level. Also it's interesting to put that into the context of escalating attacks by dogs on humans.
