Problem with the new Forum

The bottom half of a thread page was missing from my screen yesterday; the page just scrolled down to the bottom and stopped halfway through Laura's post. I thought it was a one-off, and someone would spot it and correct it, as the other threads unrolled fine.

However, it has happened twice again tonight, on both the 'Re: Self-Introduction' and 'Reintroduction' threads; posts were cut off halfway through, even though the scroller was at the bottom of the margin.

Anyone else having this problem?

Now also happened with 'Organic Portals - The Other Race' page one; last post cut off, and no bottom margin.

Am I reporting this in the right place?

Hi bedower,

I do not have this kind of problem. Everything is working fine for me.

Next time, give the link of the thread. It will be a lot faster to test or to check.

simple machines forum (SMF) software has more "stuff" to load than the old punBB software. to the best of my "knowledge" all simple machines forums have this problem occasionally. it depends on your connection to the server. sometimes it can be a slowed connection through your own ISP or a slowed connection on the server's end. because the page loads from the top down, when it stops loading you get cut-off posts. next time it happens, try doing a hard refresh - hold shift-ctrl and click refresh on the PC, shift-apple-refresh on the mac.

Never heard about a hard refresh.

Just for the fun of learning, what is the difference between the standard refresh and the hard one?

Thanks for the help and info, guys.

Good tip about that 'hard refresh'; first time I've heard about it. I'll try that next time.

Apologies for not posting the links :-[ . Won't happen again, honest!

I've just been back to the 'Reintroduction' thread here:

http://www.cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php?topic=9718.0;topicseen

and experienced the same problem. Not only that, Windmill Knight's post is missing completely.

So I tried that 'hard refresh' and it didn't work. Tried a 'soft' (?) refresh by just clicking the Refresh button on-screen and that didn't work either.

Tried flicking between pages 1 and 2 on the offchance and no luck there.

This problem has only cropped up in the last couple of days or so.

a standard refresh acts as if you re-typed the URL and went back to the same page, it reloads the page you're looking at, but uses any temp files you may have had stored in your browser's cache. a "hard refresh" clears all the temp files for that page that your browser had stored in the cache before reloading the page "from scratch" so to speak... for example, if you were looking at a page, and someone replaced it by uploading a new page (a newer file with changes, etc...), if you refreshed normally you would see the old page you'd seen before. if you did a "hard refresh" you'd see the new page because the old one would be cleared from the cache...

hope that makes sense... :)

edit: bedower, not sure what the problem would be then  how old is your machine? has your browser software been updated? i suppose it could be any number of things... i'm not an I.T. guy, but it sounds like you're having a problem with loading temporary memory... what's weird about that is the forum software shouldn't be that taxing on your RAM resources...

Hi bedower,

yesterday it happened one time to me and I just remembered it, as I have been reading your post, that there has been something strange (the bottom, or half the page has been missing, and I couldn't navigate through the listed page numbers, so I had to scroll up the page to the top "navigation") in one post. But this happened just one time.
So it seems, as JohnnyRadar suggested, that something is with your connection, computer etc.?!

To the hard-refresh function I found one page, if Johnnys post didn't make sense ;):

My computer isn't that old, JohnnyRadar; it was bought new in Jan 2005. I know better grade comps come out every month practically, but 3 years isn't old to me.

What has occurred to me is that I downloaded a couple of Microsoft updates three or four days ago, at their prompt.

I might actually go into System Restore to take these 'updates' off and then see what happens.

'Clutching at straws' is the phrase that springs to mind here!

Thanks for the answers and the link. It does make sense and i see the difference now.

Heck, i seem to have the same problem as you, Bedower! Introduction, Re-introduction, and Anonymousoneuk threads are displayed half-way or so, and the rest is invisible! I tried to do hard refresh several times, but it doesn't work. I'm not so much PC savvy, could it be some new virus or likes? Does somebody else have the same problem?

Okay, since several people seem to be having a problem, I just want to note that everything is hunky dorey with my computer.

Even went back to the page Bedower lists and it loaded fine.

Could it be the browser you are using?

If you take out the MS updates and things are fine, that would be quite interesting. I have not been updating with them and was wondering if I should be as they were about the malware thingy.

Anyway, quite interesting.

Everything is working fine here.

Talking about virus, have-you scan your computer for virus recently?

I hope I am not hijacking this thread... but the thread title seems apt.

It seems that there is no possible way to hide the email address was
was done in the previous forum version. I find that I can gather everyone's
actual email address as it appears in the status bar, as well as placing the
mouse over the email icon itself. Is there any plans to make this information
more anonymous?

Thanks!
Dan
