Profile image changed by itself?

strange numbers as a url
Do you mean an IP address? It has probably something to do with your provider. If it applies only to images and similar resources, data compression is used at all likelihood.

What is this book actually about? Is it one of the books recommended by QFG? Funny, it shows even a black boomerang on its cover.

After that short maintainance update on the forum today, my profile picture disappeared all together. I had to re-do it. My profile said I had no image uploaded. ?? As for your profile pic, POB - it always appeared as the coffee mug for me, not the book.

What image are you seeing right now? Is it the coffee mug with your old avatar on it and the word 'pob'?

No it's a book cover 'Beyond the Matrix'

Well, that's weird...

It is isn't it. I attach a screenshot for prosperity

My guess is that the browser's cache handling has a bug which in this instance caused the cache to become corrupt (one image replacing another). Just a guess, though.

I don't think so. Where should the cache/browser take this image file from? How should it be aware of it? It is only possible when other users use this avatar as well, i.e. the browser confused the image files known to it. Another scenario could be that the browser randomly accessed the wrong url and thus loaded a different avatar, but that's unlikely too.

i would rather bet on some sort of malware
Which kind of malware do you mean? Either the board was hacked or attacked by malware (but I don't think this is the case right now since more would have happened probably, but I can't exclude this, of course), or Pob's PC is infected. But I don't think that's the case too, because a malware would behave differently. If it could change profile images on any forums where the client is logged in and browsing, it would do more damage and Pob wouldn't see any book about the Matrix but rather images with attractive girls or something like that. It would insert additional code to the sites opened.

It could be possible if he'd browsed anywhere where the image was loaded in the session before or during the "switch"; then: 1. (before:) Cache could've been written incorrectly to disk (wrong memory, for example due to pointer-related bug, being accessed when writing out relevant part), and upon restart the wrong image would pop up on the forum as cache is read. 2. (during:) Or the error occurred when it was first seen, the needed image for the "switch" having been loaded earlier during that session.

Hello Pob, I just saw your new avatar, did it happen on purpose this time? ;D

Yes, some spring cleaning Legolas :) Still none the wiser about the random switch before. I think Drygol's suggestion of reinstalling OS is a good idea.

Sorry in the delay replying. This book is not a QFG recommendation. Interestingly it is very much the opposite:

The subjects covered range from the latest thinking in quantum physics (string theory) to UFO's to crop circles to the pyramids to crystal skulls to MMS, the incredible mineral supplement created by Jim Humble to cure malaria in Africa.

Do you think your OS is infected by a computer virus? Did you recognise other abnormalities? You could first, before un- or reinstalling your whole operating system, try to either reinstall your browser plus cleaning temporary stuff or to change/update/upgrade your browser. And, of course, you should always scan your harddisk(s) for malware first.
