Prurigo Pigmentosa (skin inflammation related to ketosis)

Hello, I have unpleasant update to this thread to make :(
I have this stupid rash again. I started restricting my carbs 6 days ago. I'm wondering maybe I should not do this? I don't have Minocycline available but I could possibly get Doxycycline? I haven't figured out if this requires prescription. Any advice if I should do antibiotics, or any other cures or ideas or insights about this are appreciated.

There is now such site on the web as "http://www.theketorash.com/" And more evidence points to the fact I do indeed have a type of prurigo pigmentosa.

Hello wetroof,

How many carbs were you eating when the rash appeared? Perhaps a moderately restricted number would work better for you.

Do read this thread for more information to determine if antibiotics would be something you might benefit from:

That looks pretty similar to the rash I've been dealing with for 2 months or so. It spread like wildfire over my shoulders and neck, I was told at first it was Urticaria. Then I went back to the doctors after a month of it not clearing up, and seen a Dermatologist. Even he was completely stunned, but said it looked like some sort of bacterial/fungal infection on the skin.

I was prescribed some antibiotics and was given a lot of anti fungal/bacterial & steroid creams. The steroid cream really did clear it up, but I'm still struggling a little with it now. I think having a diversity amount of carbs and Lipo VitC every day helped too. I increased my carb intake, I must be having between 15-20g a day or so. Cabbage, green beans, sweet potato, parsnips, carrots (2 of either of those) and not worrying so much about staying in Keto.

Also, it seems to have cleared up since doing a 10-day healing gut protocol. Although, as you've described, it comes and goes and so does the itchiness and irritation. But it definitely isn't as worse as it was last month.

I have been consuming probably 40-60g carbs a day. I think it was around day 5 my body may have started making ketone bodies since I had to start drinking more water. I got the rash the next day. On Saturday. I've been reading about the condition, and saw some people have success with a full round of antibiotics, and even with maintaining a ketogenic diet, their rash stays in remission. I did see a doctor today and got a prescription for Doxycycline. So I'm planning to take the antibiotic for at least a full two weeks. Last time I had the rash I never did this - I only took the antibiotic minocycline when the rash flared up - which only worked so well. It kept coming back. So I hope to get good results this time. If I rash comes back maybe I will not do the ketogenic diet.

I could try restricting my carbs down to zero, I would have to make a bit different food... But I really want to take the antibiotic now to get rid of it...

Lilac, I heard steroid creams don't work from some people with p. pigmentosa. So that is interesting. I'm hoping mine stays away for good (assuming that I can get rid of it!), and your's too.

Gaby, I did not read the thread. thank you for linking it. I read that anti-biotics can be harmful to gut flora... So I do want to read that to understand more the risks of taking antibiotics. It is a long thread, is there an specifically good summarizing posts to read in it? I read the first one on Arthritis possibly being caused by the immune system targeting microbes that migrate to the joints.

The entire thread is important, though you could read "Why Can't I Get Better" by Richard Horowitz to get a general idea of what chronic persistent infections are capable of and how they are dealt with.

Doxy for two weeks is definitely not long enough, you'll know why by glimpsing the forum thread. Even standard treatment with doxycycline for rosacea lasts for several weeks or even months. It is an autoimmune related skin condition which is sometimes effectively treated with doxycycline. More than doxy's anti-inflammatory effect, it could be because doxy kills problematic bugs.

Perhaps it could be an histamine intolerance? Do read the following article:

Is histamine intolerance the cause of your problems?

Some great info and tips there. It could clarify what you can improve in your diet.
