Was this just an accident, or maybe some kind of warning, or maybe an actual attempt to eliminate him:

Russian media has revealed that a head-on crash in which a man was killed involved Vladimir Putin's official black BMW.
However the Russian President was not in the car at the time when it was struck head-on by another vehicle which crossed over from the opposite side of the road.

From what little I can see in the CCTV footage it looks like the car swerves into the BMW at the last moment (or the BMW driver would have had more time to react/swerve), so I'm inclined to lean towards it being deliberate.
 
I would say the news is a hoax, with real car accident footage. I cant find anything in the "Russian media". Plus the driver was driving for 40 years, so how old is he? 70?

You are probably right. Its a hoax, or some attempt for a propaganda, because the only media that published this is Dailymail.
I do found some Russian and Ukrainian media that have only translated Dailymail article.

According to comments of readers on this sites , it is a hoax. Its very interesting the purpose of this fake new attempt.

I checked Sputnik news and Russia today and there is nothing about that.

So the source od this disinformation is Daily mail

But I am still wondering what was the purpose of this. Its not done for fun for sure.
 
I think it is a hoax but 3 British Newspapers gave the news. And one in Spanish. But no RT nor Sputnik. So it is not a true news, surely! Can it be a hoax but at the same time a threat? But why? I think it is to play with people, it can be distraction or also they want to see something in the stock market? To see the reaction of people? Very strange! :O

It does not have to be a hoax, just Russian media did not inform the public because people being more aware how things work would not take this lightly, more war like sentiment, etc... Real or not real it seems like an empty threat to Putin and to show to their western population that Putin is vulnerable(to get more support), empty because president would not travel alone. There would be dozen cars and bikes in motorcade for protection, and the route is known only prior to going, and if there is some kind of summit, etc.. where route could be easily guessed and is known in advance, the route is then cleared of all traffic and snipers are put all along route. So it is not so easy without inside moles. And his personnel is always monitored, bugged, can not use social networks, so to prevent creating of moles or MK ultra types.

Moscow. 2 Sep. INTERFAX.RU – a Serious accident occurred on Friday on Kutuzovsky Prospekt, it killed the driver of the BMW management Department of the President of Russia.

“As a result of an accident on Kutuzov Avenue, according to preliminary data traffic police, the result of a head-on collision killed the driver of the BMW motor company UDP”, – said the “Interfax” press Secretary of the Department of presidential Affairs Elena Krylova.

“The managing Director of President Alexander Kolpakov expresses its deep condolences to the family and friends of the deceased driver,” said a spokesman for the UDP.

In addition, she said that at the scene the officials of the Administration to clarify the circumstances of the accident.

“According to preliminary data traffic police, the driver of the Mercedes, moving in a dedicated lane, for yet unknown reasons abruptly changed trajectory, went into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with BMW,” – said Krylov.

The result of the received traumas the driver of the BMW died at the scene.

According to media reports, both got in an accident the car had no passengers, the driver of the Mercedes was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Earlier on Friday, the press service of the traffic police, “Interfax” confirmed the death of the driver in a traffic accident on Kutuzovsky Prospekt.

There are still different information out there. RT German reports as Konstantin stated at the beginning that it was a driver or driver manager from Putin. RT.com reports it very neutral:

A high-speed head-on collision between a BMW government car and a Mercedes was caught on CCTV. According to police, the Mercedes unexpectedly changed direction, crossed into oncoming traffic line and crashed into the BMW. The driver of the BMW has died, driver of Mercedes in in hospital. The BMW in question was assigned to the Russian upper house of Parliament, the Federation Council, had no passengers when the crash occured. The crash took place on September 2, and a police investigation is under way.

Notice also that "Putins" car was driving alone and not with the usual entourage of seceret service cars and bikes around it. Yes looks like a hoax, although it could be that the "putins chauffeur" was driving privately with the car, then no entourage would be needed, since Putin wasn't in the car.

My first tgought when watching the video was a car being hacked, as has been the case in other accident-murders in the last few years. FWIW
