Question About "Banned" Status

I was reading the Forum discussion (The Work section) by "Starfaction" http://www.cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php?topic=4111. After reading about a third of it, I noticed this person was "Banned."

I'm wondering about the significance of that, as it may pertain to the validity of his comments (considering his posts are still on the site here). If I had time to spare, I'd read it all and seek to discern any disinfo, etc. But since I haven't had any "spare" time since 1982, I wonder if you can help me out here. What are the bases for becoming "Banned" and, in particular, is it appropriate for me to inquire about why "Starfaction" was Banned?

Thanks and keep up the "technical excellent taste and flavor" ;)

As a bit of an aside - we've had many 'newage', love and light, Mayan calendar, and many more 'experts' who have wandered in declaring that they are experts on such things and sharing their oh, so abundant 'knowledge' with us. This is where discernment comes into play. In almost all instances, after a person is 'banned' we leave posts up for instructive purposes - to see what has been 'weaved' along the way. fwiw.

Generally people who are Banned have repeatedly ignored or consciously violated the forum rules. As Anne mentioned, a good deal of those violations occur because of enormous self-importance and attempts to "teach" us all how things supposedly "are".

Thanks for the link. Yeah, one page of that was adequate to assess the enormity of the "prophet's" ego.

(what does "fwiw" mean?)

what about OSIT- I have an idea from the context it is usually used in, but would like to know what exactly it stands for

OSIT > Or So I Think
Why can't we all use the full words in our posts? It was a bit confusing when I (or we) read other people's posts. I actually thought those were computer errors.

I think it is a good idea and we can call that external consideration. :D

And for some members the english is not their native language.

A very good idea, I think. I am a native English speaker, and I often find acronyms very confusing. I vote for plain English - external considering for non-native English speakers and writers.

The funny thing is, if you just type What is OSIT in google, SOTT forum shows up on the first page. I think it's indicative that it is not one of the more popular acronyms on the internet, and we have been using it a lot more on this forum than most sites on the internet. Just typing osit in google by itself yields stuff like "On Site Inspection Team", and I don't see "Or So I Think", at least it's not easy to find the meaning that we use it for. If you type Acronym OSIT in google, on the first page you get the known disinformation forum, GLP, that is actually "flaming" our forum and is referring to someone using OSIT on our forum. I thought that was funny, it's like we're associated with "OSIT" on the internet now lol.

Though most acronyms like "fwiw" can be found just by typing them into google. So while I don't think it's very externally considerate to use too many acronyms, it is also not very externally considerate to ask what they mean without at least trying a simple google search either (OSIT being the exception, osit...).

I have an idea to help mediate:

Would it be possible to modify the forum code to include an "acronym highlighter"? Here is an example:
hXXp://www.spotlessoffice.ca/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=1
(on the above link, put your mouse over the acronyms to see what they mean)

I don't know if this would be worth it, but it is one possibility. The only way to make everyone stop using acronyms is to put it in large bold letters on the forum's front page or something, which is silly, and since most forum users will probably not end up seeing this thread, it's probably of little use to make a forum-wide request of all users in a single thread. But we can ask the admins to consider stuff, since they have forum-wide powers and stuff :)

Made this thread, all ideas/suggestions welcome:

Well, we've gone through the acronym thing before. Sometimes it helps when you are in a hurry. You can always search the forum for things you don't get. Here's the earliest thread about all the confusing acronyms:
