reading headlight

Hey everyone

I was thinking of buying a reading headlight, and I was wondering if anyone here could recommend any that's good to use. I searched around online and found a few but there are too many choices so I thought I'd ask since a lot of people read here. ;D

I read on some forum that this one is supposed to be a good one...
http://www.zebralight.com/H501w-Neutral-White-w-new-UI_p_13.html

And I saw this one on Amazon that looked interesting..
http://www.amazon.ca/Streamlight-61407-Head-Mounted-Flashlight-Elastic/dp/B002OJWO7W/ref=pd_sim_sbs_hi_9
(but there were no reviews for it so I'm hesitant to try it)

Thanks!

I've this one. It's the best weight/power ratio in the market but the battery life while using maximum power is quite limited (about 2 hours).

I recommend that you use lithium batteries (if your headlamp is compatible with such batteries). It will increase the battery life, reduce the weight of your headlamp and the cost per hour of use is not much higher than alkaline batteries which are not designed for intensive use: headlamp or camera for example.

Hi Deedlet,

I have had a headlight (Energizer) for over 8 years:
http://www.amazon.com/Energizer-Headlight-Green-Black-White/dp/B002CYRZK0

I've used it for paranormal investigating as well hiking at night. I still even used it for reading some nights when I can. Very useful. It can get really bright, especially when you're in a pitch black environment.

But, I've tested it out at a local store before buying it to make sure that it would do me fine. I don't know if it would be possible to find headlight products in a local store(s) in your area, for you to test it out before buying (as that's my suggestion).

The Streamlight 61407 headlight that you mentioned does seem interesting.

Perhaps others would have better thoughts on this.

fwiw.

Hi Deellet,

I am using one headlamp in camping and I can easily read with it.

Have you had the opportunity to look at that site : _http://www.mec.ca/AST/ShopMEC/HikingCamping/Lighting/Headlamps.jsp ?

You will find quite a lot of headlamps and probably there is a store close to where you live. They have an excellent service. You can try one and if you don't like it, they will refund you without any problems.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions guys!

I think this is what I'll do. I didn't even know where I could go to buy one until you mentioned that link. I was just going to order one online... and you never know with ordering stuff online.... like how it's going to work.

Anyhow thanks everyone!!

I own a Petzl headlight

it is amazingly comfortable and as the strap is flexible you can even lean back on a pillow. (no hard bits on the strap)

also, the one i have has modes, so you can choose how strong of a beam you want. check to see if the models you're looking at have this feature.

i recommend reading with a headlight, you'll never go back !

Excuse me asking, but is it because the light of a headlight is better for the eyes?

I think I will myself look for one!

Personally I use a headlight before going to bed and I'm using just the red light (which is a mode of the lamp) to simply reduce the amount of light. It is a bit harder to read, but also easier to go to bed with this red light and not to wake up again with a beam of light ;). And this zebra light seems to have a similar mode, to adjust the lumen of it.

Anyway, hopefully not to sidetrack this topic, but does not too much bright light damage the eyes (when reading) or is it just a mystery?

Hi Deellet,

I am using one headlamp in camping and I can easily read with it.

Last year I experienced two periods of extended power loss in my area in northern NJ, lasting 4 to 5 days. One from hurricane Irene and the other from that freak storm that toppled numerous trees. I found the most useful thing I had on hand was my camping headlamp. A life saver. My wife used it a lot for reading in bed. I had it on from sun down till I went to sleep at night. If you don't presently have one of these gadgets, by all means get one... or two. Even if you don't intend to use it for night reading.

Along these lines, a gravity water filter is also essential. They're not cheap but important for the times ahead.

Funny i used a LED head lamp that had a battery pack on strap on the back, (very very bight led, maybe to bright) and tried to read in bed before i went to sleep. i found very quickly that it required that i was going to have neck problems from trying to adjust my head to accommodate the postion of the cumbersome battery pack, so i just gave it up. Also the LEDS were so bright that it made the page's of white paper bright as well making it difficult to adjust my vision to the pages brightness, being that book, was only few centimeters away from my face. :/

This is the one i should used have used, the Princeton Tech ( _http://princetontec.com/?q=product-overview-page-use-outdoor ) which is much more suitable and comfortable.

But i would add that night time reading before bed time is a time when the eye's exposure to bright light's is not suppose to be healthy for a good night's rest and or a deep sleep.

Just a thought.

Tips for Healthy Sleep
You should wake up refreshed in the morning without the use of an alarm clock and feel energetic all day. If not you may find some good tips below.

Sleep deprivation is a large proportion of the problem is due to the high pacedlifestyle causing the lack of time to get the sleep we need. When we do not get the amount of sleep we need we accumulate a sleep debt. This sleep debt has to be paid back or sleepiness will continue to worsen. Many people try to pay back the debt on the weekends resulting in the disruption of their circadian rhythm.

......Avoid bright light around the house before bed. Using dimmer switches in living rooms and bathrooms for a few hours before bed can be helpful. Dim light helps the brain produce melatonin. (Dimmer switches can be set to maximum brightness for morning routines.)
Keep bedroom dark . Using Even a night light can disturb sleep. Use light blocking curtains on your windows to block outside light if needed.

well, it is an LED light, but i think the thing is that when u are able to adjust the light intensity, you can choose an intensity that's neither too bright nor too dim.

i have been using it for years and have experienced no blurring of visions or headaches.

another good thing is, even if the house is dark and you get up to go into a different room, you don't have to start turning house lights on and off, the light comes with you and you have your hands free.

during 2006 i went travelling through Asia, and i can easily say that the headlight was the best purchase before the trip. i used it for reading, walking around in the dark outdoors and indoors and even to scare a pack of wild dogs that decided to test me once.. :-)
