Reality behind the Curtain - Movies

Michael Winterbottom, who made The Road to Guantanamo, made a documentary based on The Shock Doctrine. It was recently shown on Channel 4 in the UK. It features some footage of Klein speaking at different engagements and documentary footage of the events she is describing. It's a good overview of her main thesis.

You can have more info about the shock doctrine's video on that thread:

from JhonnyRadar,

it's a great idea, however there's already a lot of recommended films in the board Movies & Trivia: Picks & Pans... check this thread out (Reality behind the Curtain - Movies) for some really good ones.

thanks for the link, JhonnyRadar. I use the boards for Movies and the one for books to get good advice on which books to read and movies to watch. I use it also to check if a book somebody else has recommended me is intox or not. My thought though was more in the direction of the idea that supports the recommended reading list: a list of books to read that can help to increase the objective understanding have of the reality on the BBM. A list that has been discussed for its value and serves as a guide to get up on speed.

Great movies on this board. Have seen most of them, but there's a few I may need to check out with some popcorn.

Revolver was mentioned and I thought it was very insightful.

A film not mentioned that I'm curious what the reactions would be is the movie Triangle. Horror movie says on the cover, "terror comes in waves". I found it rather shocking but interesting to think of the concept of the film. Anyone else out there seen this one?

i've seen it. it's kinda like a bloody twilight zone episode. not bad, but certainly not 'must see'.

It does kind of remind me of a bloody twilight zone. :P yes, I agree it is not a 'must see'. However I found the consensual time loop concept interesting and they tie it into Aeolus and Sisyphus and also the accumulation and owing of an ongoing debt.

i would like to add

Pleasantville (1998)
_http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120789/
which can be taken as an allegory of 'breaking out of one's reality'

eXistenZ (1999)
_http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120907/

and another vote vor "The Thirteenth Floor"

These are both great movies but it is Pleasantville that I absolutely love. For me it is one of the greatest movies I've ever seen about the importance of gaining knowledge, and thus evolving. I just introduced it to my kids this weekend and they really loved it too.

It's always nice when the kids watch something a little different than their usual superhero or vampire love story movies, and enjoy it for all the right reasons. This movie is a lot of fun but also has some very powerful messages in it. It's slightly similar to Back To The Future but with a hell of a lot more substance.

I highly recommend it.

I watched Pleasantville a few nights ago. Very slow to get started, and doesn't seem like it's going anywhere, but then it starts to get really good. Great metaphor for our world and our state of sleep. The authoritarian reaction to the inevitable waking up of a few people was depressingly classic. I especially liked that line when the mayor releases the new "Code of Conduct".

"...
SEVEN: The only permissible paint colors shall be BLACK, WHITE or GRAY, despite the recent availability of certain alternatives.
EIGHT: All elementary and high school curriculums shall teach the "non-changist" view of history — emphasizing "continuity" over "alteration." "

Spot on!

I'd definitely recommend Evidence of Revision, Waltz with Bashir, The Shock Doctrine, and The Power of Nightmares as non-fiction stories that are really great. Everyone should watch them IMO.

Is the shock doctrine really a -full-length-movie-(beside the book)? I read about it a while back and clicked around on the homepage and couldn't find anything, so I thought it is just the smaller movie advertising the book.

Yes, it's a full-length documentary, Gawan. I've watched on youtube divided in 6 parts, First part is here:_http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=550p455dfM4&list=PL1DE69769369B7089&index=1. In a preview it says: " An investigation of "disaster capitalism", based on Naomi Klein's proposition that neo-liberal capitalism feeds on natural disasters, war and terror to establish its dominance." It also available on vimeo here : _http://vimeo.com/26718047
