Return of the swine flu? Comet dust? Airborne chemicals?

Mrs. Tigersoap, I strongly recommend increasing your daily vitamin C dosage. I routinely take 4 to 5 grams of vitamin C every single day.

I see! I thought 500 mg a day was enough and that in case of pre-cold/flu symptoms, I was to up the amount to 1.5 to 2 g.

I also cannot eat citrus fruits, by the way, but it doesn't interfere with my taking vitamin C.

That's a relief, then. I was a bit concerned about making things worse...

Many thanks for your input Anart! :)

See: Vitamin-C Post

As for Vitamin-C:

I did an experiment and found my VC tolerance level for my
body, as RedFox did. However, it could be different whether
you are in normal health or not. I think I recall in one of the
forum postings, there was a general rule of thumb given: under
normal health, VC intake should be 1-5g and under abnormal
health, intake should be 5-10g, I think..

I take 1g of VC daily under normal conditions, but if
on the onset of a cold/flu/sickness, I up the dose to 5g
(1 teaspoon) every other day until the malady goes away.

Additionally, for Vitamin D-3, I take 1000mg every 3rd day.
I also take goldenseal root, once per week (in capsule form)

But test yourself, know and learn your body, and act accordingly.

Mrs.T, Whenever I get sick, I just start pumping the Vitamin C all day long, the way RedFox described. I've gotten up to 20g, no problem, and then recovery is rapid. I take 3-4 g daily as well.

What has worked really well for me this year, besides high doses of vit C, is increasing vit D intake (up to 6000 units per day) at the first sign of sickness, and eating Manuka honey (_http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manuka_honey), a sort of honey from NZ that has anti-bacterial properties.

Hope you both get well soon! :flowers:

Fwiw, instead of taking ascorbic acid I recently switched to calcium ascorbate. The calcium ascorbate has a milder taste and feels less acidic on the teeth. I'm pretty sure it's as effective as a.acid, but I could be wrong.

Is anyone throat area/ limph nodes swell morning after taking vit c ? Or is it normal. I think i've caught a virus, and vit c makes symtoms more painful.

Oh yeah, by the way you can make your own colloidal silver.. much cheaper and just as effective. Check out www.colloidalsilver.com.au I know you are in Europe but I'm sure you can find something like this. Otherwise we pay $40 for 500ml from the store! I haven't bought our maker yet but its on my list.
Vitamin D and magnesium I see are on your list.. keep it up

Also this may be of interest. I burn this blend at work to keep all the nasties at bay.

Howdy Folks !

I'd like to share something what seemed to help with virus (flu?). I had symptoms of a virus for about 3 days. Virus hasn't conquered me completely, body been pretty much busy sneezing, spiting out mucus to get rid of it since day 1. I don't know if it's actually me with a virus, or I get bombarded by it at work, where lots of people are sick, since we share same air.

Loaded self with Vit C, Vit D 5000 IU 2x a day. Yesterday, boiled a ginger root tea with burdock root (from raw ingredients). And I also have been experimenting with Bee Pollen that supposedly has Anti-viral, Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory & anti-allergy properties. (Antioxidant flavonoids, including myricetin, quercetin, rutin, and trans-cinnamic acid.)

Added generous amount to that tea (when it slightly cooled off, not to destroy bee pollen benefits), about 3x what I would usually take (total of 3 table spoons).

Result: when I wake up this morning. All of the symptoms are pretty much gone (except for nose run when I am back in office with sick people). Other than that feeling full of energy despite lack of sleep at night (6 hours). The rest of the virus symptoms are gone including sore throat, muscle ache & headache.

I am not sure what exactly did the trick in the tea, because all of the ingredients suppose to assist in preventing virus replication. I am honestly surprised with such quick results.

Please BEWARE if you want to try it, some people can have severe allergic reaction to bee pollen (testing for it is mandatory !).

Also, make sure to drink plenty of clear fluids, since burdock has diuretic properties.

Good & strong health to you all !

Wouldn't you be getting a super-huge dose of calcium then too? That doesn't seem like a good thing.

How do you take your vit C Aragorn? Do you just mix it with water and then drink, or do you take it in capsules? I used to take it mixed with water, but then I had the same acidy feeling in my mouth which wasn't pleasant. Right now, I take up to 10g per day in capsules and so far it doesn't make my mouth feel acidic at all.

Yes, I'm taking 5000 IU of Vitamin D every day. And I have now increased my dose of Vit C.

Thanks everyone for chiming in!

I mix it with water, sometimes adding some sodium bicarbonate. In my country they sell this thing called 'fruit salt' that has sod.bic., lemon acid and potassium - it sizzles when you mix it with water. Adding this 'fruit salt' helps the calcium ascorbate to blend and it tastes good too (not acidy at all). The Now Foods cals.asc. contains 100mg of calcium per 890mg of vitamin C. I usually take one teaspoon a day which adds up to 3.56g of vitamin C and 400mg of calcium. Of course when I get symptoms of the flu I increase the dose(as I've done the last couple of days). Yesterday I took ca 10g of vitamin C, so I guess my calcium intake went through the roof! I'm not sure how harmful this is. I find the whole subject of how much calsium a man needs very confusing; I haven't found any good 'rule of thumb' of the amount of calcium/day in the recommended health books, or perhaps I've missed it?

Thought i would throw this into the mix in reference to garlic my work well for fighting infection, and a hotter heat environment.

Garlic: http://www.holisticonline.com/remedies/flu/Flu_herbal-medicine.htm

Garlic is known to kill influenza virus in test tubes.3 It also stimulates the immune system and wards off complications such as bronchitis.

Garlic contains several helpful compounds, including allicin, one of the plant kingdom's most potent, broad-spectrum antibiotics. This herb's aromatic compounds are readily released from the lungs and respiratory tract, putting garlic's active ingredients right where they can be most effective against cold viruses.

Holistic practitioners often recommend taking several cloves of raw garlic per day during an infection. You can also take aged garlic extract, or consume products such as hot garlic bread or toast.

Also perhaps the help Benefits of a Sauna for higher temp., that may not be available with your tent unit.

TherapySauna therapy refers to a confined steam room of about 175 degrees Fahrenheit. Generally the room is made of a dried, wood frame and heated with hot river rock or stones. The sauna is a place for people to sit, relax and sweat for both social and health purposes. With benefits ranging from alleviating arthritis pain, lowering blood pressure, helping with respiratory disease and clearing up your complexion, sauna therapy is a relaxing way to ease the body and mind.

Health Benefits
The high temperature in a sauna stimulates blood flow and circulation, causing blood vessels in the skin to expand and become more flexible. This better blood flow helps lower blood pressure. Sauna therapy also helps with respiratory problems by alleviating chest congestion, which can relieve complications from bronchitis, laryngitis and other respiratory disease.

Body Cleansing
The dry heat of sauna therapy helps the body sweat out toxins and flush excess water and waste. The heat causes the body to react much as it would if you had a fever, activating your immune system, white blood cells and antibodies. This helps ward off or fight a cold or flu.

Warnings
If you have serious heart or respiratory problems, check with your doctor before using a sauna. Avoid drugs, alcohol and food before using the sauna.

Just wanted to tell you that I have not coughed once today for the first time in two weeks. I have been taking between 5 and 10 g of vitamin C every day and I guess it did the trick (that and comfrey balm).
Thank you once again for your input.

Sorry to answer this so late. It is my understanding that it is not advised to supplement with calcium, as we seem to have too much, that magnesium is what we need to supplement with. Here is the link to what Psyche had to say about that:

Hope this helps.
