Are You Really Being Your True Self?

Many times we get carried away by what we suppose this life is all about. We try this or that false personality, thinking that it fits into the situation just right. But we are not thinking nor feeling at all correctly. Since that way of life leads to death. Seeing that there is a great change coming which we know as the Realm Border Crossing, we need to stop playing games with ourselves. Stop thinking that your false personality is fine, and that it's doing the trick, and that you don't need to delve any deeper into yourself. It is nigh, it is at the door. Whatever is going to happen then, we must be ready for it now. It's time for us all to take a closer look at our true motives. How have we been behaving? Are we really loving ourselves, or ignoring ourselves?

Here are a couple of excellent excerpts I found, which can help you to see your true self much clearer, and take steps to acquaint yourself with you once again.

False Personality and Chief Feature

We are born with body and Essence. As we begin to grow we develop personality through learning and imitation. Personality is necessary. We need a strong personality in order to meet the needs of our material life. However along with personality we also develop false personality. False personality is made up of ‘I’s in ourselves that are totally unreal. False personality is all that we imagine ourselves to be. It is the imaginary picture that we have of ourselves that we try to live up to. It is the false face that we put on to meet the other false faces that we meet.

False personality is made up of ‘I's that are unreal. These are ‘I's that are in no way connected with what you really are. They are created in the imagination and give us a false picture of ourselves. For example, I have a friend who wants to become a radio announcer. He speaks poorly, stutters, and could never in a million years make it as a radio announcer. However, he has a picture of himself as one who is very vocal. One of the teachers that I use to work with, let’s call him Mr. Pearson, had a picture of himself as one who was very knowledgeable. What ever subject anyone brought up he presented himself as an expert on it. The other teachers use to say of him, “He’s a legend in his own mind.”

False personality is easy to spot in others. It is made up of ‘I's which always feed the self-love. ‘I's in false personality must be totally destroyed if one is to reach a higher level of being.

Ouspensky maintains that Mr. Smith, or whatever your name might be, is not real I. Mr. Smith is the ‘I’s that are created by your relationship with the world you live in. Mr. Smith is what you become through your education, family relationship, and field of work. Mr. Smith is a combination of hundreds of ‘I's making up false personality.

You need to separate your self from Mr. Smith, and develop psychological forces, observing I, which can eventually grow into deputy steward. Observing I and deputy steward are work terms for psychological forces that can step aside and constructively observe your relationship with the world.

Mr. Smith is created by self-love, pride, and vanity. He is kept going by chief features. Chief feature is made up of ‘I's in yourself who pivot around a certain weakness in your false personality. These ‘I's come into existence whenever certain stimuli excite them. And, you always react to the stimuli in the same way, through these ‘I's.

Chief features come in pairs. They show the contradictions in ones self. These contradictions are kept separate by buffers. Buffers are created by unconscious self-education. We are not aware of the contradictions in our self because when we are on one side of a buffer, we believe that this is true ‘I’. When we are on the other side, again we believe that this is true ‘I’.

One of my chief features is that I always get angry when my students don’t live up to my expectations. Though I have been working for years to control my anger, I still express anger as soon as I become identified in a classroom situation where students are misbehaving. I know that yelling at my students never improves their behavior, yet I yell.

On the other side of this feature is my belief that I am “cool” in relating to my students. I joke around with them. I do raps for them. I tell them stories about my past. I am always “cool” with students when we are on a one to one basis. Yet, when a situation arises where students are not meeting my expectations, I switch to the other side of the buffer. The belief that I am “cool” is a part of my false personality.

Another one of my chief feature is that I never pay attention to detail. If I’m putting together a basketball stand for one of the grandkids, I don’t read the directions, I try to put it together by the way I feel it should go. If I’m driving in the Sierra foothills, I never look at a map. I don’t check the cardinal directions. I don’t look at road signs so I often get lost. When I’m reading a technical book, I skip over the detail and often miss the thesis.

One the other side of the buffer, I see myself as been very exact in everything I do. I look at myself as being a neat precise person who pays close attention to the world around him. This ‘I’ who walks around looking at everything with precision is a part of my false personality. This ‘I’ helps to perpetuate my self-love.

Once you develop observing I, you can look at your chief features and begin to escape from them. Though observing I, I see the angry ‘I’ in my classroom that screams for his students to be quiet and do their work. As soon as I see this angry ‘I’, I can stop my negative behavior and begin to relate to my students in a more productive way.

If through observing I see that I am hiking a trail without paying attention to where I am going, I can leave that ‘I’ who pays no attention and begin picking out trees and rock formations to mark the trail so that I don’t get lost on the way back.

Ouspensky states that chief feature is in false personality, that it is your chief weakness. It’s like an axis that everything else evolves around. Maurice Nicoll maintains that our purpose on earth is to find our chief feature and through super effort find a way to over come it.

If we do not discover our chief features we will not be able to reach a higher level of consciousness. If we continue to live in false personality we will die with our material body an incomplete being.

Essence Contact

BY SHEPHERD HOODWIN

Essence contact occurs when the personality opens to its essence or to the essence of another. It brings growth and joy, and if the opening is great enough, ecstasy, even if the contact only lasts a moment. Brief essence contact gives some indication of what is possible when barriers are finally eliminated. Essence contact can occur with any essence, incarnate or otherwise.

The most important essence contact is with yourself. You cannot contact another’s essence more deeply than you contact your own. There are many aspects of self, but the source of self is your essence, so knowing your essence is crucial to knowing yourself. It is not hard to love yourself when you know yourself, especially your essence.

Most people fear essence contact and consequently have had a very limited experience of it, if any at all, because false personality (the fear-based ego) is dissolved in essence. If you go deeply enough into your essence, you reach the Tao itself, for your essence is cast from the Tao.

Is there a letdown or hangover, so to speak, after ecstasy, or a greater experience beyond ecstasy?

When you open to your essence, you feel empowered. Because essence contact accelerates your growth and deepens your connection with yourself, old fears may surface in the aftermath. However, you also feel greater strength with which to deal with them, although you might need some outside assistance as well.

You often experience ecstasy when you leave your body as you sleep, but because the waking personality is not equipped to deal with it (ecstasy does not fit into its landscape), the personality blocks the memory of it.

You will not allow yourself to experience more than you are ready for. Perhaps in holding eye contact for a moment with someone you care about, you experience essence contact. Although it is very pleasing, a moment may be all you can handle. Maybe next time you will be able to handle two moments.

Whenever you open to yourself—thinking about yourself in a newly loving way, for instance, or seeing yourself as you never have before—you make essence contact more readily available.

There are degrees of openness to your essence, and it is always possible to open more. When you increase your openness a great deal at once, you feel an ecstatic “rush” of expansion. When you get used to a particular level of openness to your essence, it no longer feels like ecstasy in the sense of something explosive or revelatory. However, your everyday level would be experienced as ecstasy by someone accustomed to a much lower level, if he opened to it all at once. It would tax his capabilities to open that wide. It would be thrilling yet frightening at the same time. Even if it were momentary, it would bring much growth. He would remember, at least unconsciously, how it felt and would have something new to work toward. He might resist it, because such a change in function would require much of him. The false personality is devoted to the status quo, but the essence seeks ecstasy, so we all eventually keep moving.

Essence contact requires coming fully into the present moment. When you “plug in” to the socket of the present moment, the circuit completes, energy moves, and the light comes on; you “get it.” You see the impact of the moment. You see who you are, and who the other person is, if it involves another person.

Does the personality fall away upon plugging in to essence?

No. It becomes enlightened. The light comes on; the personality becomes light as opposed to heavy. In other words, it becomes the true personality rather than the false personality. In enlightenment, all parts of the personality become open to receive and transmit love. Think of a neon sign as representing the personality. Not plugged in or turned on, the sign can be rather dingy. Its true colors do not show, and it may even be an eyesore. Turn it on, and it looks totally different. You can see it from several blocks away. This is what essence contact does.

Two people who “fall in love” with each other may momentarily put aside their fears about intimacy and allow essence contact. There have been many things written about the way people who are in love glow. If you “fall in love” with yourself, you can have a similar experience. Your relationships with both others and yourself can teach you much about developing and sustaining essence contact. Allowing barriers to fall and improving communication can help provide a stable foundation upon which essence contact can happen more regularly and deeply. However, that is not the essence contact itself. Essence contact with another person often happens seemingly by accident. Sometimes you both just happen to find yourselves in the present moment and before you can stop it, there you are, in contact!

Is there a realistic limit to striving for essence contact?

The limit is how much you are willing to be conscious. Some people find it too much trouble. Even those who remain mostly unconscious may have some essence contact, and therefore, growth. However, the growth is more laborious, painful, and slow than when there is conscious opening to your essence.

Re: Are You Really Being Your True Self?

Hi Panther,

Is it possible for you to explain in your own words who Michael is? :)

Re: Are You Really Being Your True Self?

Panther Black, have you finished reading The Wave and Adventures With Cassiopaea? How about "The Secret History of the World"? "High Strangeness"?

Re: Are You Really Being Your True Self?

i fully enjoyed this article . It reminded me of a friend with whom i thought i had a very special telepathic bond in highschool and now after 7 years i thought we could establish that kind of magic again but he seemed very lost. He created a false personality and everytime we speak he contradics himself and pretends to be otherwise. I had been very confused ever since because i can't figure him out. On one side he acts bold , confident and charistmatic and on a different occasion he seems insecure, shy and dull or very defensive. Those mood shifts are tremendously unpredictable and i couldn'tcope with them so we separated somehow..

EH, as a fairly green member of this forum (as you have stated), perhaps it would be a good idea for you to ask the owners and moderators of the forum about any material you wish to introduce as a "teaching" tool before you introduce it and announce, unequivocally, that it is, in your opinion, a useful teaching tool/article? That is simple courtesy.

Yes, thanks for the catch. I was thinking about Black being "green" and it got translated into "Emerald". That's what you get for doing a dozen things at once at bedtime!

Hahaha this is hilarious. Sorry. No I haven't finished reading it yet Laura. Ok? I'm reading 5 books, plus a few on the internet which includes some of yours, and it takes time. I understand what you're saying. Read this stuff so you know what we're talking about. Ok.

I was laughing becuase I wondered where that thread went. It was suppose to be about Essence and Personality. I had put it in the "Work" zone. Well, I should have listened to my intuition when I saw that second excerpt written by a channeling to some Michael. I was thinking, this sounds so close to the message I was hoping to give out, because our essence it seems is so difficult for the majority of people to comprehend. Well it turns out all this cultish stuff is attached to it. I wish the moderator would have deleted it instead. I really didn't want to cause you any pain Laura.

What I was laughing at though was on the first page of this post the way Laura was making a joke about the whole cultish thing. You really do have a good sense of humor.

Oh yes! Now to go back...and read the whole post! :D

Yes, it can be quite difficult to discern a lot of the material posted on the internet. This is one of the reasons why the reading is suggested here. So that we can begin to work that muscle. Another thing to do is to try and do a search on the forum before posting something so that you can avoid these situations.

Quite a bit of the new age type of information online sounds similar and it's easy to get tripped up by it. This is why so much time has been taken in discussing it - in order to make it easier for people to begin to understand what is really behind much of it. As we begin to discern one from the other, we may start to see that not everything is of equal value.
